The second section is the historical account of the brothers’ families; this section is condensed to give the basic information of the Fortan family’s historical origins. The following features summaries of each section of the book;

CONTENT
  • PROLOGUE: THE VANGUARD
    • Gawain Fortan, the grandfather to Griffith and Gareth Fortan had been in his time a formidable Knight of the Galidraan Kingdom. He had been sworn to protect the royal family during the Clone Wars and continued to serve as a noble Knight throughout the Age of Rebellion.

It is rumored that Gawain had provided refuge for survivors of the Great Purge. A rumor that was never debunked nor was it confirmed. However, there are other rumors that state that Gawain himself was a member of the Sith Order and had a hand in the slaying of Jedi.

Sir Gawain had by the time of his grandsons’ birth gained renown for his dedication and service to Galidraan. He had been given land throughout the planet and it was on these parcels of land that Griffith and Gareth would later build their own lineages upon.

  • CHAPTER ONE: BASTARDS OF THAMES
    • Geoffery Fortan always wanted what he couldn’t have, and Maddelynk was exactly that. She lived in Thames with little to her name, but at that time he didn’t care. It was her turning him down that he saw as a challenge to his pride. Over time the two fell in love and Geoffrey was content to forget his obligations to Nerissa and his daughters. Neglecting to ever inform Maddelynk of his marriage altogether, even when pressed or asked about it.

He would however soon leave Maddelynk and return to his wife after his affair was revealed by his father. Gawain told his son that if his affair resulted in something more that he promised to make the result his greatest work.
Born to Maddelynk Light, Griff and brother Gareth knew nothing more of life than the streets in which they were born. Their mother told them of their father, a man who was clever with coin and words but nothing more. Griff and Gareth worked as runners and delivery boys for various shops and innkeepers. However, when Maddelynk learns that she is gravely ill, she finds that it is time to introduce them to their father.
  • CHAPTER TWO: CASTLE ON THE HILL
    • After being introduced to their father, the boys quickly learn that their father has no place for them. Fortunately, their grandfather Gawain promises Maddelynk on her deathbed that he would ensure their well-being.

Once their mother passes, Griff and Gareth are initially ignored by their father and his family. Until step-mother Nerissa begins to spend time with them and makes an arrangement with Gawain to get the boys a proper education on the promise that word of this never reaches Geoffery’s ears.

Gawain then reminds his son of the promise he made earlier. This time he directly informs Geoffrey that Griffith and Gareth would be made his heirs over their father. This greatly angers Geoffrey who then makes a silent vow to never recognize the brothers as his legitimate children.

  • CHAPTER THREE: LOYALTY TO THE EMPIRE
    • Under the guidance of their grandfather, the boys embraced the ideology of the Empire. The Galactic Empire’s doctrines and most especially what is now known as Tarkinism fell in line closely with how Galidraan operated as a society making it much easier for the brothers to fit into the Empire’s military.

The loyalty of the two brothers were tested when the Empire enlisted them to take part in COMPNOR. COMPNOR was their first official assignment while they awaited training. It was during this time that their father refused to recognize them as his children, making it nearly impossible for the boys to inherit land or money from the family.

Receiving pay from the Empire is just enough to cover their expenses once they complete their military training. Gareth would be part of the Imperial Navy while his brother was part of the Imperial Army. Griffith’s marksmanship was attributed to time spent hunting alongside his grandfather. While Gareth credited Nerissa with the study of Galidraan’s age-old naval traditions.

  • CHAPTER FOUR: SONS OF GAWAIN
    • The brothers were given small assignments around the system of Galidraan. It would be Gareth who shined as a naval strategist while his older brother took to the ground. Defending Galidraan IV’s military bases from rebels against impeccable odds.

Gareth himself found more rebel ships dropping out of hyperspace and shifted his lines. Starfighters screamed out of their star destroyers moving to engage the rebels. Gareth utilized the system’s layout to his advantage ordering his starfighters to take refuge among Galidraan IV’s space debris.

On the ground, Griffith made use of the terrain and weather. Gaining advantage with his walkers and tanks, utilizing them to pin the rebels in various valleys and mud pits. Rebels at Galidraan IV were pushed back that day, and the brothers were soon recognized as the Sons of Gawain.

  • CHAPTER FIVE: THE INFERNAL MOFF
    • Soon after their victory, the brothers encountered Moff Angwynn. Angwynn hailed from Coruscant but had been born on Galidraan. Angwynn feared the brothers would be after his title and thus began to set obstacles before the brothers. From defective equipment to shortages of personnel. This was notable when the brothers were meant to take part in the Blockade of Ibaar.

Recognizing their adversary, Gawain appealed to his daughter-in-law Nerissa. Nerissa taught the brothers how to play the game of politics. A lesson they had sorely missed while growing up in the streets of Thames. The lesson was well received as the brothers managed their way into the fight at the Battle of Jedha and later Scarif.

Moff Angwynn, crossed by the brothers’ appearance at Jedha and Scarif, took to the streets of Galidraan to learn more about them. There he was able to learn of their origins and made plans to out them as possible Force-sensitives and Jedi.

  • CHAPTER SIX: IMPERIAL BLOODLINES
    • The brothers are dispatched to Vrogas Vas. However, before they arrived, they’re met once again by Moff Angwynn and his forces who aim to deny the brothers their place in the battle. Angwynn justified this to his superiors by revealing the brothers’ lineage.

As their lineage was revealed, their grandfather appealed to the Empire from his deathbed. Recognized as the Sons of Gawain, the Empire dismissed their background and ushered them forward toward Vrogas Vas. Angwynn was chastised for wasting the Empire’s time.

The brothers arrive at Vrogas Vas and aid the Empire in its victory. They are later participants in what the ‘Alliance to Restore the Republic’ called the Mid Rim Retreat. Where the brothers fight with extreme prejudice against the rebels, seen as terrorists to those loyal to the Empire.

They are later called to meet with the Emperor himself. The information they received was just one of the Emperor’s many contingency plans. Upon return from this meeting, the brothers are informed by step-mother Nerissa that their father wishes to speak with them.

Geoffrey Fortan recognizes the brothers as his heirs naming them inheritors of the estate. The personal victory however came at the cost of their grandfather who passed away soon thereafter.

  • CHAPTER SEVEN: THE FORWARD STEP
    • The brothers return to Galidraan and while they are welcomed as heroes. Both Griffith and Gareth work to have Galidraan prepare itself for the New Republic’s offers. Galidraan would turn down and ultimately refuse the New Republic’s attempts of absorbing Galidraan into its cloud of influence.

They worked to dismantle the Galactic Empire’s holdings and move them underground and out of view. Military bases, workshops and intelligence centers are relocated and Galidraani Imperials are dispersed to form a loose network.

This work has not gone unnoticed and they are offered the role of royal protectors. Their duties would now be to Galidraan and the royal family. The brothers accepted the honor and worked to modernize the Kingdom’s military. This served a far greater purpose as other systems looked to Galidraan for protection in exchange for fealty.

  • CHAPTER EIGHT: THY KINGDOM COME
    • As the First Order begins its rise to power, the brothers are contacted by the supposed heirs to the Empire. The contact reminds the brothers of the Emperor’s plans and enacts the policies that would see Galidraan as being the second home to the First Order’s data, including technology and intelligence information.

They also establish several academies in which to house orphans of the Galactic Civil War. However, this is in part a ruse, while the academies are there to house orphans. These orphans would soon serve Galidraan as opposed to the First Order.

While working with the First Order, the brothers catch the attention of an old foe, now Grand Moff Angwynn. Who makes his way across the void to end the brothers once and for all.

  • CHAPTER NINE: THE ROYAL RESOLUTION
    • Upon Grand Moff Angwynn’s arrival into the system he was met with the Royal Navy of Galidraan. The Royal Navy’s ships were modern when compared to Angwynn’s aging fleet, moreover they outnumbered Angwynn’s forces. The brothers appealed to those in his fleet causing several to defect.

Angwynn brings forth to the system a would-be world killer. Combined with the forces that have defected, the brothers are locked into a bitter battle with Grand Moff Angwynn. Angwynn’s flagship is boarded by Griffith while brother Gareth routes Angwynn’s fleet.

Rather than destroy what remained of the fleet there in the system. The Royal Navy melted down much of the fleet and reused the metal for other projects throughout the system. Grand Moff Angwynn was killed aboard his flagship and his body later burned by the brothers.

Systems loyal to Grand Moff Angwynn are soon turned over to the brothers who expand Galidraan’s influence with these new systems.

  • EPILOGUE: GUARDIANS OF GALIDRAAN
    • Grand Moff Griffith Fortan and his brother Grand Admiral Gareth Fortan would retire with the title of Guardians of Galidraan. Griffith Fortan took up residence at Blakeslee while Gareth settled at what would eventually be known as Herevan.

The Imperial legacy left behind by the brothers is still seen today throughout Galidraan where the ruins of the old Galactic Empire’s footprint still stand. Where the underground Imperial network lays beneath the surface as Historians and Archaeologists alike now work to tell the story left behind by the brothers and those of their generation.

HISTORICAL

The Fortan name began as Fortune and has variations of Fortun and Forton, as well. During the 400 Years of Darkness, old Galidraani records display the Fortan family motto as ‘The Celestial Enriches.’ There are records of the Fortan family going further back beyond the Declaration of the New Order and as far back as the Old Republic. There the traces of the name disappear splintering off with only one mention of a Fortan. A woman who was an Agent of the Sith Empire known only as Agent Fortan. Not much else is known about her other than her record was impeccable.

The beginnings of the family on Galidraan itself can be traced to old East Lothian where the family then splinters off to Northumbler, Èideann, Thames, Blakeslee, Herevan, and Kernow. Wherever the family has gone they have seen prosperity and as their name might suggest fortune. While brothers Griffith and Gareth are responsible for the lines at Blakeslee and Herevan, they were sired out of wedlock by their father Geoffery Fortan of Northumbler.

Geoffrey’s wife Nerissa was initially outraged at her husband’s infidelity. Even more so that after Maddelynk’s death, when Geoffrey refused to see his sons. Nerissa sent for the boys and cared for them as her wards. Whereby she insisted on her husband legitimizing the brothers. Geoffrey initially balked at the idea of legitimizing his bastards. Nerissa however was persistent and threatened her husband with an annulment. She went as far as to enlist her cousin Cyril Wrayburn to represent her in court.

Afterward, Geoffrey legitimized Griffith and Gareth as his sons and inevitable beneficiaries of his fortunes. Nerissa then raised the boys as her own alongside their brother Nathandru, and sister Norabelle. Nathandru would remain in Thames, while sister Norabelle would marry and move to Kernow.

Griffith Fortan is the founder of the family at Blakeslee, where Gareth is responsible for the line at Herevan. The brothers were formidable during the Galactic Civil War and moreover were key to Galidraan’s military modernizing and for the expansion of the system’s influence along the Mara-Parlemian Trade Corridor and upward toward the Tingle Arm.
