Yes, he could feel them. Perhaps not as greatly as a Zeltron could, but nearly so. Every fiber of her being ached at her loss. Pain unimaginable by him. In fact, he could only think of one thing that could ever cause him to feel the sort of pain that she did, and it wasn't the death of his family. He was more or less estranged from them already, so their death would not do him much harm. No, the only thing that would hurt him was if someone hurt his counterpart in the Protectorate. Teynara was the only Jedi that understood him, probably the only one that ever truly would. That understanding was too great to lose.
But Zonia's pain was gut wrenching. When she embraced him he was surprised. It wasn't the worst feeling in the world. No, only her emotions could make him feel bad. At first he stood there with his arms outstretched, her cheek lying against his chest. Her hair smelled wondrous, but he could also smell her fear and pain just as much as he could feel it. In spite of himself, he wrapped his arms around her and held her close to him. Here was a child victimized by his own kind. He understood. Most of those like him he despised as well. He was atypical, though.
Resting his hands on the small of her back, he couldn't help but close his eyes and lean his head forward to touch his cheek to the top of hers. This was the sort of person that fueled his desire to change the galaxy. People like her, who suffered because some people wanted more than they deserved. Because some people, frankly, were monsters. In the galaxy he envisioned, those people would have no place. It would be harsh, but they would be dealt with swiftly, and in the same manner, regardless of the severity of their crimes. It could be done if people would only believe. People like her. People who were broken by those that abused what the Force gave them. The kinds of Force Users that looked down on those who couldn't use it.
"Zonia, your heart aches more than I could ever understand," he said quietly as his hand rubbed her back gently. "I can never fix what was done to you, I can only try to prevent it from happening to others."
They would. They could. A chance was all he needed. A small probability of success was worth the effort to him.
"I am not a monster. I am just a man who wants to use his power to save the galaxy from itself. In the end, tragedies like what happened to you will never happen again if we succeed, but we can only succeed if we try, and we can only try if we have people who will try with us. I feel your pain. It flows through you and into me. I know your anguish and I will bear that burden as fuel for my desire to save this galaxy, even if you will not join us in the endeavor. Your pain is my burden to bear now. May that ease your soul."
