OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: Create an interesting directed-energy weapon technology used by the Gwerin Doeth for increased effectiveness and precision, manipulating principles of electromagnetic spectrum emissions and magnetism to achieve the goal of creating guided plasma munitions.

PRODUCTION INFORMATION
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Guided Munition (Directed Energy Weapons)
  • Magnetic-based tracking
  • Magnetic emitter
STRENGTHS
  • Target tracking: Applying principles and concepts of programmable munitions and magnetism directed energy weapons chiefly plasma weapons firing bolts of magnetically-contained plasma can be manipulated successfully to track their targets and adjust flight path as necessary while moving through space dramatically tightening up grouping and ensuring that projectiles make contact with their target. Essentially it turns any magnetically-contained plasma weapon system into a "smart munition" that cannot be readily jammed or countered with soft countermeasures.
WEAKNESSES
  • Line of Sight: The technology requires for an uninterrupted line of sight between the magnetic emitter and the target for example when used in a small-arm application the weapon must remain trained or sighted on the Target, if a shooter is in cover where the target is not trained or sighted the projectiles will continue on its' current path but no longer track the target as the magnetic emitter's "tunnel" is no longer acting upon the magnetically-contained plasma.
  • Magnetosphere environments: Because the method of target tracking involves the projection of a strong magnetic field "tunnel" to guide the typically magnetically contained plasma-projectile, the tracking functionality tends not to function in certain environments such as the Magneto-spheres of gas giants for example disrupt the magnetic guidance of the technology and render it inoperable.
  • Physical obstructions: Suitably dense materials physically placed in the line-of-sight between the target and munition launcher can act as 'cover' for the target as the munition launcher may fail to penetrate very dense materials.
DESCRIPTION
Aisling Target Acquisition & Tracking Technology is a type of guided-munition tracking technology that is designed specifically for directed energy weapons as opposed to ballistic-based weapons. Aisling was a physicist who worked for the Unified Gwerin Ecumene and the technology carries her name. The Aisling Tracking relies upon principles of magnetism and magnetic guidance to achieve its' functionality. Aisling tracking relies on certain hardware being present in the weapon system and therefore the system's size and/or weight can possibly be higher than other similar systems of similar destructive capabilities. The technology relies upon the formation of magnetically-contained plasma which can then be manipulated by a generated magnetic field that takes the form of a "tunnel" created by a magnetic field emitter constructed into the fire control system, this tunnel varies in diameter depending on the strength and size of the emitter with effective range of guided munitions being directly proportional to the emitter's size, as such warships featuring this technology often have weapon systems with greater range than when compared to weapon systems made and used for infantry soldiers.
