| DESCRIPTION |
| When Aether Systems designed and produced the Megos-class Star Destroyer for the Galactic Alliance, it was a representation of two cultures blending together and served as a beacon of unity to strengthen a new alliance between the Hapan Consortium and the Galactic Alliance. Unfortunately, recent events in the Galaxy have seen that unity shattered, as the Black Sun criminal empire absorbed the Hapes Cluster and the Galactic Alliance collapsed after a prolonged and devastating conflict with a resurgent Galactic Empire. However, the aesthetic and design inspired by the Hapan People's deep love of beauty and the might of the arms and advanced technologies of the Galactic Alliance that first birthed the Megos-class remained locked away in the archives of Aether Systems. The design teams at Aether Systems resurrected the old Megos-class from original production files that had been copied and saved before the collapse of the Deep Core to the Galactic Empire, noting that the original design remained sound and required little in the means of updating - resulting in the Aether SD-M05 being sent into immediate production, however, on a limited scale just as its predecessor had been. This limited production run - originally a result of the engineers attempting to work out the intricacies of combining Hapan design with Alliance engineering and technology - is to keep the SD-M05 closer to home, as the company is hesitant to part ways with these craft and utilizes them to protect vital and sensitive Corporate locations deemed of great importance. In keeping with the original design aesthetics, these Capital Ships have also inherited the same drawbacks, most notably, the large Sublight Drive System located at the extreme aft of the vessel, which remains just as susceptible to attack and can result in the vessel becoming crippled if sufficiently damaged. Nevertheless, the primary role of this vessel is that of a Warship, a role that is made clear given the heavy armaments and defensive capabilities built into the SD-M05, which also incorporates a tried-and-true Hapan weapon system in the form of the Pulse Mass Generator Tubes and the accompanying Pulse Mass Mines. Just as its predecessor, this focus on creating a Warship came at the cost of maneuverability and speed, with these craft being incapable of achieving rapid acceleration or high rates of speed at Sublight, whilst also requiring an ample amount of time and distance to execute a maneuver. The Hapan love of beauty permeates the design despite the years between the introduction of the SD-M05 and its predecessor, and this can still be seen in how the majority of its weapon systems are laid out to cover the forward firing arc, with few weapons facing aft. This design has resulted in a nearly uncontested approach vector that forces these vessels to rely upon escort ships to cover their flank and prevent attacks from the rear. The original design attempted to mitigate this and some of the vessel's other weaknesses by ensuring that the craft had an extensive hangar capacity and was able to support and deploy multiple squadrons into an engagement. These crafts also retain the capability to support and deploy up to two additional squadrons of Support Craft, such as unarmed shuttles or troop transports. While it is unlikely that the Aether SD-M05 will be open to the market at large, with only a few select buyers being able to purchase these vessels directly from the Company, what is more likely is that an individual would run into these vessels protecting one of the many Corporate Worlds of Aether Systems located deep in the Unknown Regions and Wild Space. |
