STRENGTHS
  • Heavy Destroyer - The overall design and focus of the vessel is focused on an increased arsenal, boasting an impressive array of armaments that can bring devastation to targets both in space and planetside.
  • Planetary Assault Carrier - The design of the Aether SD-30s was created to not only batter through enemy fleets and secure the space above a planet; they were also meant to be utilized to contest the planet itself. Each of these vessels can carry and deploy a Corps-sized force planetside along with support personnel, and accompanying vehicles and materials. They also carry four modular garrisons, as well as two additional modular garrisons designed for more hazardous or unusual environments.
  • Light Carrier - These craft carry a limited complement consisting of a single wing, comprised of three squadrons, with a fourth squadron in reserve to reinforce any potential losses. It is also capable of supporting and deploying four full squadrons of Support Craft or Unarmed shuttles that are often utilized to ferry ground forces, materials, and equipment for any planetside campaign.
WEAKNESSES
  • Limited Mobility - The Aether SD-30s were designed with a focus on heavier firepower and extensive defensive capabilities, all at the cost of speed and maneuverability. These craft are noted for having difficulty executing precise or immediate maneuvers, and have shown an overall decrease in their acceleration and speed at Sublight.
  • Ventral Hangar Bays - Located along the underside of the vessel are the hangar facilities that are utilized to deploy and recover the complement of smaller craft that these vessels can ferry. However, this section is lightly armed and has limited coverage from supporting vectors, making this section easier to target and more susceptible to boarding attempts or strikes.
  • Intensify Forward Fire - The design of these craft focused the brunt of its arsenal in a manner as to allow the vessel to bring the majority of its armaments to bear against a target. Due to this configuration, there are fewer armaments covering the vectors along the aft and ventral sections of the craft, leaving these areas more vulnerable to attack or strategic strikes.
DESCRIPTION
The design and production of the Aether SD-30s happened alongside its sister designs and much in the same way as the Aether SD-30e; whereas the latter was a complete redesign and retrofitting that focused on speed and maneuverability, the group of engineers and technicians that focused on the SD-30s went in the other direction, focusing on firepower and defensive capabilities. This redesign produced a vessel that is known for its extensive arsenal, expanded defensive capabilities, as well as its ability to ferry and deploy a full Corps-sized formation planetside. Unlike the Aether SD-30a and SD-30e, the designers of the SD-30s did away with the Magnetic Railgun complement in favor of more reliable weapons platforms that could be more readily and easily fired in rapid succession. This has resulted in these crafts being equipped with the more common Octuple Barbette Turbolaser emplacements and XX-9 Turbolaser cannons. Furthermore, this focus on an increased arsenal also resulted in a smaller hangar capacity. However, these vessels are still capable of deploying a full wing of Starfighters or Bombers - organized into three squadrons - with a fourth squadron in reserve to reinforce any losses. Additionally, the vessel can also carry four squadrons of Support Craft or Unarmed shuttles that are utilized to ferry its onboard contingent, support personnel, and accompanying vehicles planetside.

While this has resulted in a vessel that is more than a match for other large Capital Ships, it does not come without its own drawbacks. The primary issue that the SD-30s have experienced has come in the form of limited mobility, as the expansion of its arsenal and defenses has resulted in a heavier vessel with underpowered engines. This means that these crafts are notoriously difficult to maneuver and have difficulty executing precise or immediate maneuvers; likewise, they have shown an overall decrease in their Sublight speed and acceleration compared to more specialized Star Destroyers. The location of the hangar bays is also an issue, situated along the ventral section of the hull, with this area known to have insufficient coverage from neighboring vectors due to the design emphasizing that the craft be capable of bringing its full arsenal to bear against an enemy. This can also be seen in the simple fact that the aft section also shares limited coverage, making these two areas more vulnerable to attack or strikes, or requiring additional resources to defend during a prolonged engagement.

Where the Aether SD-30s stands out among its sister designs is in its ability to support and deploy a large standing force, with each of these vessels coming equipped with four Modular Garrisons to be deployed to create beachheads or secure recently claimed holdings. Furthermore, they also carry two specialized Modular Garrisons, which can be deployed into more hazardous or irregular terrain that landing forces may come across during a campaign. The Aether SD-30s may lack in Starfighter Capacity, Speed, and Maneuverability; however, it more than makes up for it with its overwhelming firepower and its means to subjugate a target.
