STRENGTHS
  • Military Transport - Though the SD-30c was designed to be utilized as a Fleet Carrier, it retains the capability and capacity to support and deploy a Legion of Troopers planetside, along with up to three Modular Garrisons to secure a foothold or hold recent gains made in a theater.
  • Fleet Carrier - The design of these vessels included a focus on increasing the overall hangar capacity beyond the limit of the smaller sister design. This has, in turn, allowed these craft to carry a larger contingent consisting of five full wings - organized into three squadrons each - of Starfighters and Bombers, while also being able to support and deploy an additional two squadrons of Support Craft and Unarmed Shuttles.
  • Heavily Defended - In a bid to ensure that these craft would remain standing at the end of an engagement resulted in a design which includes additional defensive features, reinforcements, and capabilities that further protect these vessels and allow them to complete their most vital mission. Ensuring that those craft it deploys have a base to return to when the fighting is concluded.
WEAKNESSES
  • Minimal Armaments - Ensuring adequate capacity to house the myriad of Starfighters, Bombers, Shuttles, and other Small Crafts that these vessels are capable of supporting and deploying necessitated the removal of many of the weapon emplacements and armaments that were present in the original SD-30a design. This has resulted in a smaller overall armament that is carried by these vessels compared to the smaller sister design.
  • Limited Maneuverability - Focusing on increased hangar capacity and defensive measures has resulted in a decrease in overall speed and acceleration at Sublight; with these vessels also being noted as lacking in agility, as it often takes additional time and distance for these craft to properly execute a maneuver.
  • Ventral Hangar Bays - Located along the underside of the vessel are the extensive hangar bays that are utilized to deploy and recover the myriad of smaller craft that these vessels are capable of deploying. However, this section is lightly armed and has limited coverage from supporting firing vectors, making this section easier to target and more susceptible to boarding attempts or strikes.
DESCRIPTION
Where the design of the Aether SD-30a was an attempt at striking a balance between a Star Destroyer and a Dedicated Carrier, the design of the Aether SD-30c focused on the aspects of a Fleet Carrier, resulting in a vessel that was not only larger than its sister design, it also carried a larger contingent of Starfighter and Support Craft squadrons. The primary strength of the SD-30c is, as mentioned, that it is a Fleet Carrier, with an increased hangar capacity which allows these craft to deploy up to five full wings of Starfighter or Bomber Squadrons. This is further supplemented by the fact that it can also support and deploy two additional squadrons of Support Craft and Unarmed Shuttles. However, this increased capacity came at a decrease in its overall arsenal, with such armaments as the Magnetic Railguns and their Capacitors being removed, resulting in these craft having an overall smaller armament than what is carried by the SD-30a. Not only are these vessels capable of supporting and deploying multiple wings of starfighters, they also retain the capability and capacity to support and deploy a Legion of Troopers alongside three Modular Garrisons - allowing these craft to also act as a Military Transport Ship.

Another area in which attention was focused was on increasing the defensive measures and capabilities of these vessels. Reinforced armor plating, additional point defense emplacements, and jamming devices further increased the overall defense of these craft. However, this also came with its own drawbacks, as the SD-30c is remarkably slow at Sublight Speeds and is not known for being able to achieve higher rates of acceleration. Additionally, these vessels are notoriously difficult to maneuver, often requiring additional time and distance to execute a maneuver or simple course correction that other specialized designs would have no issue completing. While these vessels were designed to focus on the role of a Fleet Carrier, the location of its extensive hangar bays has also presented another issue with these vessels, as the ventral section which the hangars are located, has limited coverage from supporting firing vectors. This means that the hangars are more easily targeted and susceptible to strikes or boarding attempts, and often require at least one squadron to remain on standby to protect this vital area.

Overall, the SD-30c excels at its intended design and outpaces the SD-30a. However, it also complements its sister design by covering for its own faults and drawbacks, and vice versa. These craft are capable of unleashing a massive swarm of Starfighters or Bombers to overwhelm an enemy, providing a fleet with much-needed support. Despite its own limitations, the Aether SD-30c stands on par with other Fleet Carriers that are currently fielded throughout the Galaxy. And while it would struggle in a toe-to-toe engagement, its utilization of its Starfighter and Bomber wings is what would, ultimately, allow it to carry the day.
