STRENGTHS
  • Automation - A common place feature installed aboard many of the vessels designed and produced by Aether Systems is that the secondary and tertiary systems are handled by automated systems linked to a centralized computer core. This permits these craft to be crewed by a smaller complement while also ensuring that the critical systems like navigation and life support remain in the hands of the organic crew.
  • Dedicated Carrier - The design of the SD-30a focused on an increased hangar capacity, thus these craft are known to be capable of supporting and deploying three full wings of Starfighters or Bombers - organized into three squadrons per wing. Furthermore, these craft are capable of supporting an additional wing of Support Craft or Unarmed Shuttles.
  • Prow Magnetic Railguns - These craft are known to have been outfitted with a rare and exotic piece of artillery that is not commonly utilized in the galaxy. Each SD-30a boasts up to four railguns that utilize electromagnetic force to hurl a solid slug projectile at a target.
WEAKNESSES
  • Lesser Mobility - The SD-30a was not designed with speed or maneuverability in mind, resulting in a vessel that has lower acceleration and overall speed at Sublight. This also means that it often takes additional time and distance for these craft to properly execute a maneuver compared to a vessel that was designed with a focus on these aspects.
  • Automation - While automated systems allow for larger vessels to be crewed by smaller complements, they are not without their drawbacks. The primary issue is that these craft are known to be more susceptible to Ion-based weaponry or EMP-based strikes that have the potential of reducing the overall effectiveness and capabilities of the vessel, as the limited organic crew would have difficulty in maintaining the strain of handling these additional systems.
  • Railgun Capacitors - Though these weapons are known to be devastating, they are also energy hungry and heavily dependent on a series of capacitors to power their components. While modern capacitors have outpaced those previously used, those that are utilized in the systems of these weapons still require additional time to charge before they can be utilized, resulting in a slower firing rate and preventing heavy reliance on the use of these weapons.
DESCRIPTION
The design of the Aether SD-30a was an attempt at striking a balance between the destructive firepower of a Star Destroyer and the capabilities of a Dedicated Carrier to unleash a swarm of starfighter and bomber squadrons upon an enemy. The primary weapon of these craft is a somewhat rare and exotic piece of artillery that is not often utilized in more modern-era naval forces - the Magnetic Railgun, with four such weapons installed at the prow of these vessels. These weapons utilized electromagnetic force to hurl a solid slug projectile at a target to batter down shields and tear through the hulls of enemy vessels. However, the main drawback of these weapons comes from their capacitors - that, while more advanced than previous eras, still require additional time to fully charge. This results in a slower firing rate and prevents the vessel from heavily relying upon the use of these weapons.

Where the SD-30a shines is in its secondary role as a Dedicated Carrier, with each of these craft being capable of supporting and deploying three full wings - organized into three squadrons per wing - of Starfighters and Bombers; alongside the additional wing of Support Craft that can also be deployed. This means that the SD-30a does not need to rely on additional support from other Carriers to provide further Starfighter or Bomber squadrons as often, as these craft at utilized to provide these support elements to small formations of Frigates and Cruisers. Like many of the more recent designs that have been drawn up and produced by Aether Systems, the SD-30a is highly automated, with many of its secondary and tertiary systems being linked to a centralized computer core - though vital systems like Navigation and Life Support remain in the hands of the organic crew, which allows for a smaller crew complement to control these vessels. However, this renders these vessels more susceptible to Ion-based weaponry or EMP-based strikes that have the potential of disabling or destroying these automated systems, overwhelming the organic crew as they attempt to handle the added strain and stress of operating these additional systems.

While the SD-30a was being designed, it was always the intention to focus on a robust armament, heavier defenses, and expanded hangar capacity - which came at the cost of limited maneuverability and reduced acceleration and speed at Sublight. Despite this limitation, the Aether SD-30a is, arguably, on par with many of the Star Destroyers currently fielded throughout the Galaxy. Though it would struggle against multiple foes, it is more than capable of standing on its own and holding the line in a one-on-one fight, utilizing its heavy armaments to batter down an enemy, and following up with a finishing blow by unleashing its complement of Starfighters and Bombers to mop up the fight.
