All my life, I have known only longing. The longing for a family whole and unbroken, for the warmth of love to banish the cold of loneliness, for the security of a future unfettered by the specter of hunger and want.
When my parents, Jhaan and Firela, learned that a new life stirred within my mother's womb, hope was rekindled in their hearts. They had been blessed with two beautiful daughters, but they yearned for a son, a male heir to carry forward their legacy. And so, when the wise women revealed that not one child but two were coming - a boy and a girl - my parents saw the hand of fate at work, a sign that our dwindling people would rise anew, phoenix-like, from the ashes.
Yet, as with all things, the gods exact a price for every gift.
Our family and village suffered as the bounty of the earth withered and died, the summer harvest failing to provide for the lean times that would soon loom ahead. My mother, frail and exhausted by the demands of her labors, gave the last measure of her strength to bring my brother and me into the world, her life slipping away even as she gave us ours. And my brother, poor innocent that he was, followed her into the night, his tiny flame flickering out mere hours after our birth.
I owe my own life to the quick hands and sure knowledge of the midwives, without them, I too would have perished.
From that day forward, a shadow fell across our family. The laughter and joy that once rang through our halls grew silent, the warmth of love giving way to grief and bitter resentment. My father and sisters, once full of life and laughter, became mere specters of their former selves, and our once thriving clan crumbled into disarray as my father abandoned his duties, lost in his sorrow.
Life carried on like this for years and years, until finally, when it was my ninth name day, the very foundations of my world was shattered. Our home, once a sanctuary, was torn asunder by those we had trusted, my sisters stolen away, my father left broken, crippled, and bleeding at my feet.
In the face of such adversity, a spark of determination flared to life within my breast. Against all odds and expectations, driven by the primal will to survive, I took up the mantle of provider, teaching myself the ways of the hunt, learning to stalk and kill so that my father and I might live on.
But even as I grew in strength and cunning, the shadow of hunger remained, ever-present, a constant threat. And when the time of my first shift came upon me, I faced it alone, my body wracked with pain, my mind shattered by the trauma of it, leaving me wary of that power that lurked within my veins.
As the years passed, the darkness only deepened. My father's mind gave way to the same madness that threaten all Lupo who refuse to undergo the change, and as his madness grew, so did his transformations grow more frequent, less controlled, until he ran as a beast, preying upon the innocent of the villages below. And I, a child still, was left to bear the burden of his sins, to cover his tracks, to protect the both of us from those who would seek justice for his crimes.
And justice, it seems, is a patient hunter.
After the third accident, trappers and the bounty men came for us, looking to hunt the monster that my father had become. And I, in my desperation attempted to set a trap for them, to protect my father and myself. As fate would have it, I fell prey to my own traps, left dangling by my ankle, at the mercy of those who would see me dead.
It was then, in my darkest hour, that salvation came, in the form of one of our own, the first I'd seen in over ten years. A great grey wolf tore my tormentors asunder and set me free. And in his eyes, I saw a reflection of my own self, a glimmer of the strength that had carried me through the years, a kindred soul, a reminder that I was not alone.
