"While I appreciate you saying I am pretty," Brandyn said, stepping slowly backwards and towards his destination.

With a swipe of his blade, he swung through a large puddle that was forming beneath his feet. Steam rose up in an instant, not obscuring him, but putting a degree of vagueness across his visage.

"But you do not know me, Sith, nor do you know my mission."

His blade swung a couple more times in quick succession, and he stepped back into the shadows that engulfed him. Years of training as a Shadow, and training others in the same vein, saw him easily disappear from view. What light there was wrapped around him, rendering him nearly invisible to the naked eye.

Brandyn turned, and ran. Knowing that the mirage would only aid him momentarily. He was already giving away his position with every splash from his footfalls.

The corner of my mouth curled into a faint, predatory smile as his words drifted through the damp air like the final notes of a obsequies dirge.

Pretty.

The notion was almost amusing.

Mortals so often sought refuge within the shallow language of appearances, as though beauty and horror were opposing forces rather than twins birthed from the same dismal womb. I watched him retreat through the veil of steam, my cold gaze fixed upon the place where his form had stood moments before.

He claimed I did not know him, nor his mission, yet the Force whispered differently.

Around him lingered the faint scent of purpose, that intoxicating perfume carried by those who believed themselves guided by destiny rather than manipulated by it.

The shadows welcomed him into their embrace, folding over his figure like the wings of some nocturnal god, but I felt no urgency to pursue.

In the endless darkness beyond stars and memory, there are creatures that vanish far more completely than any Shadow. Most eventually learn that obscurity is not the same thing as escape.

I remained motionless as the rain hissed against the ground and the puddles trembled beneath his fleeing steps. To ordinary senses he had disappeared, dissolved into darkness with admirable skill, but the galaxy itself betrayed him.

Every splash rang through the currents of the world like a bell tolling across a forgotten crypt. I closed my eyes and felt the void surrounding him, tracing the outline of his existence through the wounds his passage carved into reality.

The cosmos was ancient, hungry, and patient; it had swallowed civilizations before his ancestors had learned to kindle flame.

Compared to its appetite, his flight was a fleeting gesture, a heartbeat of resistance before eternity. I drew a slow breath and savored the lingering taste of his fear, his determination, and the secrets he believed hidden.

Let him run.

Let him descend deeper into the labyrinth of shadows.

The dark between worlds belongs to me, and every path through that darkness eventually bends toward my throne.

"Oh, please...run," I purred in a voice colder than the space between dying stars, each word dripping with quiet menace.

"I do so love a good hunt, my dear beloved former Lord Ca'Nostra; prey always reveals its truest nature when it believes distance can save it from the dark."

I followed at an unhurried pace, my boots gliding through the rain-soaked ground as I allowed each splash of his footfalls to announce his presence to the world, while the Force guided me toward him like a blackened beacon burning within an endless sea of night.

The shadows continued to attempt to conceal his form from mortal sight, yet to me he was a wound in reality itself, a flickering signal within the cosmic abyss, and I advanced with patient certainty as a predator that already knew the fate of its quarry.

Dark tendrils of fate wrapped themselves about his heart. He understood half way to the speeder, that she was still tracking him. Somehow. She was still tracking him.

Her words were lost to the storm. But the message was still clear. He could run. But he could not hide.

For one so steeped in the Force arts of obfuscation, and, yes, outright deception, Brandyn was stripped bear of his greatest strength.

Increasing degrees of desperation fuelled each successive step. Before he finally slid to a stop.

The clouds hand broken anew, wind lashing at him — making it hard to stay upright on the exposed concourse — and he only had one option left.

He looked up to the speeder, activated it remotely, and now had to buy time for it to go through its prep-cycle.

"Damn it if I shouldn't have skipped Bri's saber skills class," he muttered.

Unclipping his saber again, he held it to the right. The blade extended as his transparency folded back like a page in a book.

"I guess I probably tell you the name of the Jedi that's about to kill you," he yelled at her.

But he didn't.
