SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Much like how Aurora Industries can link its reactor systems together for greater power output and added redundancy, the engineers who designed the Karn cognitive modules also envisioned that they could be linked together for greater computational capabilities and redundancy. Each droid brain linked in this manner is able to share its experiences and tasks with others within the network, allowing them to learn and maintain a memory of a linked module and fulfill its assigned role if that module is deactivated for some reason. This feature is more useful when the droid brains are being installed into larger droid models or even into starships or other vehicles.
  • Designed for flexibility, each Karn cognitive module can form the basis of the processing unit for any droid class that Aurora Industries, or other interested parties, design and build.
STRENGTHS
  • Karn Cognitive Modules can be utilized in a wide variety of different droid types, ranging from Class One science and theory droids to Class Four combat and assassin droids and everything in between, and even within individual armor systems to larger ships and facilities. The cognitive modules can learn and adapt from situations they encounter through the use of the integrated heuristic processor, combined with linked specialized subprocessors for increased computational power, and the Gabonna memory crystal at the heart of the module.
  • Karn Cognitive Modules can be linked together to allow for greater control over a specific larger droid model or even for integration within a starship or ground facility system. This link allows each cognitive module to focus on specific areas, but also allows each module to learn the tasks of its linked brethren as additional levels of redundancy if one portion of the network is knocked out.
  • Due to their construction with impervium and other energy, radiation, and heat-resistant and conductive materials, each module is incredibly difficult to destroy through conventional means and can essentially function as a black box if the droid the module is installed in is destroyed.
WEAKNESSES
  • While the module is designed to be incredibly durable and highly resistant to energy, heat, and radiation, it is not immune to issues. The module is particularly susceptible to corrosive agents due to its complex internal matrices and crystal memory core.
  • While the modules are designed, when linked, to be multiple layers of redundancy if one goes down, there is always the chance that a particularly strong energy surge such as from a very powerful Ion weapon or other source could travel across the entire network and short out or destroy all the linked modules.
  • Because the module is designed to be the base processing unit for multiple classes of droids, initially the individual droid brains will not be as effective as an advanced droid brain specifically designed for that role. To reach that level of advancement and specialization requires either specific programming or time for the module's heuristic processors to learn more.
DESCRIPTION

As Aurora Industries, under the direction of COO Merryn Sellek and its CEO, began to examine how to progress and modernize its droid products, it was determined that the company needed its own dedicated processing unit for its next generation of droids and drones. Previously, the company had relied upon mass market droid brains for its droid models or an extremely outdated design created by Solan Charr and the first task for the new URZA Initiative was to develop the components for the new droid brain.

Some of the key design milestones dictated by the higher ups and the engineers was to make the system durable against both kinetic force and different energies and radiations, give it the capacity for individual and linked operations and learning, and to ensure that it was powerful enough and broad enough that it could be used in all varieties of droids and even be included in ships, vehicles, ground facilities, and armor systems.

The AD270 "Karn" Cognitive Module accomplishes all of these goals. Durability is ensured through the use of impervium for the outer casing and various energy resistant or conducting materials such as agrinium, haysian smelt, and dallorian alloy to deal with energy, radiation, or heat damage sources. Each individual module comes with a heuristic processor to allow them to learn and adapt as they experience the galaxy and their assigned duties, with specialized subprocessors available for more advanced learning and processing.
