ACS-501 120mm Magnetic Accelerator Cannon
Intent: To provide the Republic with a Primary Tank Weapon
Development Thread: As Needed
Manufacturer: ArmaTech Combat Systems
Model: Mk1
Affiliation: ArmaTech Combat Systems
Modularity: Yes (Can be mounted on a stationary Turret)
Production: Mass
Material: Mass Driver Components, Duranium armor casing, Gk7 Cryocooler

Classification: Mass Driver
Size: Vehicle Mounted
Length: 5.5 Meters
Weight: 2,500 Kilograms
Ammunition Type: 120mm Slug
Ammunition Capacity: 50 Rounds
Effective Range: 5,000 Meters
Rate of Fire: 15 Shells per Minute (Breach Loaded Bolt-Action)
Special Features:
  • High Velocity: It fires with a muzzle velocity of 3 km/s making it a deadly anti-vehicle weapon
Weaknesses
  • Overheating: The Weapon may be technically capable of firing 15 shells per minute, but that causes significant barrel heat, its normally only capable of ten shells per minute without risk of the barrel melting and warping
  • Energy Draw: Despite being a form of mass driver it requires the same amount of power as any other laser cannon or energy weapon to fire
Description:
The 120mm MAC was designed to be operated by one man. A hypervelocity multipurpose round accelerated via magnetic accelerator rails to hypersonic speeds and fired at a muzzle velocity of 3 km/s allows it to travel its maximum effective range in almost a second. Beyond its effective range it loses a great deal of accuracy, and while the round is still capable of destruction, it is unlikely to hit its intended target. The massive speed of the projectile allows it to penetrate through vehicle armor, eviscerate infantry unlucky enough to fall into its path, and cause severe knock back to light vehicles. It is capable of loading anti-personnel rounds, and more powerful armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding-sabot rounds to combat more specific, heavily armored enemies if necessary, but these must be hand loaded into the breach.

The weapon is a relatively simple design, based off a standard mass driver cannon featuring tighter electromagnetic coils and a more capable barrel cooling system allowing it to be fired safely at ten shells per minute. It was noted that under duress the weapon could be fired at the rate of fifteen shells per minute, but at the risk of melting the barrel and its electromagnetic coils. While technically possible, attempting to maintain this rate of fire for longer than one minute will result in catastrophic failure of the weapon system. Intended to be the primary weapon aboard the next line of main battle tanks, it features a belt feed from the main turret into the ammunition storage compartment of the tank. This belt feed simply leaves the next round ready to be chambered into the weapon, making reloading much easier for the gunner, allowing him to operate the reloading bolt action with his right hand in one fluid motion. If a different round is requested the loader, situated on the right of the gun can simply place the round into the open bolt allowing the main gunner to rapidly reload the weapon.

The standard round fired by the 120mm MAC is an Multi-Purpose round featuring point detonation, delay, and airburst modes accessible through an ammunition data-link. This allows it to be used to engage almost every target, with the exception of the most heavily armored vehicles. A single round able to be set to engage light and medium armor (Point Detonation), buildings (Point Delay), and infantry (Airburst) allows the crew to carry less specialized ammunition and eliminates the need for specialized ammunition load outs. The round is programmable via the loader’s and gunner’s fire-control screens based on the target being engaged, allowing either men to easily set the fuse.

The wikipedia URL hyperlinked here has less than a stub's worth of information with little to no citation on the sources of its information, please either sub a round that would equate to such, or find a better source of information.
