  When most people think of the planet of Alderaan, a plethora of fanciful images come to mind. A planet of devoted pacifists who fought against tyranny through political opposition, and funding rebellion. A world of bright scholars, professors, and other learned people. A planetary kingdom that shines as a beacon of hope against the storms of darkness and oppression. Yet, if you were to ask Abelard Ulgo, he would tell you it was all a facade.
  
  Lord Abelard Ulgo was born to a cadet branch of the Great House Ulgo of Alderaan. Yet, unlike many Alderaanians, he was not born fully human. His mother was one of the hybrid species known as the Alder-Espirion: red-skinned descendants of Alderaanian human colonists and the non-human natives of Espirion. Yet, while Alderaan is widely known for its stance of anti-speciesism, there are some that do not practice what is preached. Throughout his childhood and adolescence, Abelard and his mother were the subject of veiled prejudice by other members of their Ulgo branch. Yet, as Abelard’s father was the eldest, it was Abelard’s legacy to inherit the direct wealth of his cadet branch.
  
  For a time, Abelard escaped his troubles by engaging in various passions: reading, the arts, and (most unexpectedly) gambling. He frequented the Corellian Spike tables in Canto Bight, having a knack for the card game. Yet, upon his father’s death and inheritance of the title of Lord Ulgo, Abelard saw a desperate need to do something with his life other than playing games of chance. It was from here that he delved into the world of arts and antiquities dealing.
  
  However, even this bored him for a time. He looked for more thrilling avenues to pique his fascination. His path eventually led him to founding an information brokering cabal. Taking the alias “The Sylop”, after the winning card in Corellian Spike, he now offers valuable data and information to the various criminal organizations in the Galaxy. Additionally, he has consecrated his personal yacht High Prosperity and an estate on Cantonica as places of neutral ground for agents of these syndicates to refresh and do business. So long as said business does not involve assassinations, murder, or bounty contracts.

  • Wealthy: As both a scion of House Ulgo, Abelard has a fair fortune to live comfortably off of. It is also bolstered by his involvement as an art dealer, antiques seller, and his criminal infochant operation.
  • Poker Face: After years as a gambler, Abelard has learned to suppress his physical tells in order to make sure he has the upper hand in his games. He now applies it to his realm of business as a dealer of art, antiques, and illicit information. On the whole, he does not allow his emotions to get the best of him when he negotiating with buyers.
  • Knowledge is Power: As an information broker, Abelard understands the value of knowledge. He has taught himself skills to make sure his valued data is well encrypted. Additionally, Abelard comes off as a very learned man. Often keeping a large holo-library, he makes sure to research the legitimate items he sells to the wealthy.

  • Gambler: While not quite an addict, Abelard is always up for a game of Corellian Spike, normal sabacc, or simply putting a wager on something. It truly is a vice of his, but he does not allow it to distract too much from his deals.
  • Pedigree Sensitivity: Growing up as the subject of cruel prejudice, Abelard has developed something of an inferiority complex regarding his background. While he is very slow to anger, continued negativity based on his species is something that triggers a violent reaction out of him.
  • Neutral Party: Amidst all the criminal organizations in the Galaxy, Abelard situates himself as utterly neutral. This can be infuriating when he refuses to take sides when the Underworld has its turf wars.

The Corellian Spike variation of sabacc was played with a smaller deck, comprising only 62 cards rather than 76. The first 60 cards were divided in three suits (referred to as "staves"): circles, triangles, and squares. There were twenty cards in each stave: ten green cards with positive values from 1 to 10, ten red cards with negative values from -1 to -10. The remaining two cards in the deck had a value of 0, and were referred to as sylops (Old Corellian for "idiots").

The game also made use of two "spike dice", which were rolled thrice per round to shake things up.[/FONT]
