Strengths & Weaknesses

(+) Swift & Maneuverable: Every effort was made to make this starfighter as agile as possible. In terms of weight, the vessel completely lacks a Hyperdrive unit and is composed of light materials; thereby granting it a far less burden than the average starfighter. Likewise, it is equipped with several Pulsed Ion Engines, granting it an even higher operational pace.

(+) Compact: Due to its weight and dimensions, the average hangar can accommodate more of this vessel. In particular, it enjoys a squadron count of eighteen, which is a fine step above the average twelve.

(-) Low Durability: Due to its intentionally light hull plating and frame, this particular starfighter cannot withstand extended punishment in the event of shield droppage. What's more, the shields themselves are below average In strength, for the generator units are intentionally small In order to afford greater speed. In fact, the vessel's overall durability can easily be considered below average.

(-) Low Operation Time: Although it enjoys exceller fuel efficiency due to its engine units, this vessel cannot operate for extended periods of time. At best, it can last for one hour before needing to be recalled for refueling. This operation time is well below what can be considered average, for some starfighters can go days without refueling.

Description

Having been revitalized by the ascension of a new CEO, Arakyd Industries has begun the process of creating new, innovative vessels for sale on the militant market. The first of this momentous generation of starships is the A/Y-90 "Jackdaw" Starfighter: a vessel born with a particular niche in mind. While many corporations craft vessels capable of being dubbed "jacks-of-all-trades", the design teams of Arakyd Industries instead devised a starfighter that is exceptionally good at fulfilling its main role on the battlefield.

The Jackdaw starfighter was not created for extended bouts of combat, but rather for swift, explosive engagements. Every facet of its design, from its light composition to its lacking a Hyperdrive, was intentionally implemented in order to make this vessel as quick as possible. This speed, which can rival some of the more agile sub-capital ships, is then adequately harnessed by its selection of armaments. Two potential options await any pilot who launches aboard a Jackdaw:

Engage the Big Fish or the Escorts.

For those that choose the former, the Jackdaw excels at outpacing escorts and standard-speed capital guns. Then, a pilot can deal precise, explosive damage to larger targets thanks to its homing payload. Conversely, a pilot that chooses the latter can dogfight with ease. The pace of the vessel, coupled with its choice laser cannons, can continually keep pressure on enemy starfighter screens. However, it is to be known that both paths are not intended to last forever.

The Jackdaw cannot operate for more than an hour before refueling is required, thereby meaning that offenses are intended to be quick and devastating. Being utilized for defensive combat, long-range assaults, or extended battles can result in heavy losses due to simply running out of power. Sound strategy is the best method of fully harnessing the strengths of the Jackdaw Starfighter whilst attempting to evade its glaring pitfall.

All in all, the A/Y-90 "Jackdaw" Starfighter is exceptional at fulfilling its "fast attack" role. However, outside, of this niche, the vessel has quite a few obstacles to overcome.

So this is armed as a fighter, but has the speed of a top end interceptor.

It'll need to be speed and manoeuvrability 2, or require development.

With eighteen per squadron, you're also in the old "swarm" class of fighter?

I can't see that happening without significant development, or reducing the armaments further.

According to the starship template, the larger the Starfighter the smaller the squadron. Applying the same logic I made a vessel with dimensions that should allow me to have a larger squadron count.

It's speed and maneuverability are based upon its engines, lack of Hyperdrive, light hull, etc. It's literally smaller and carries less fuel/gear than the average starfighter.

That said, I'm looking to keep the squadron count as is, but if I bumped the speed up would this become approvable?

As per our skype discussion:

The shields have been labelled Sub-Standard and it is noted in the weaknesses that the generator units are below average in size and strength.
