Private A Tree Without Roots

She had no shortage of contacts within Black Sun from whom to inquire about a personal matter of hers. A friend of a friend of a friend whose cousin was a student at the University of Alderaan, had prompted her over to the esteemed capital of Aldera. Strolling the grounds of the said pristine campus. Even with sunshades on, her eyes itched, squinting from the afternoon glare that reflected off the polished pavement and rounded architecture. Everything was too bright, too white, and the black-haired woman quickly picked up the pace, darting into the cool refuge of the science center complex building.

A thick briefcase in her left hand, made her feel more at ease, blending with the streams of students and professors as she strode down the halls. Seeing their faces of camaraderie, focus, and contentment in a sanctuary of learning, stirred up a fluttery feeling of nostalgia within her.

School. In another life, perhaps she would've liked to go to college. Become something more…noble…than she was now.

She entered the lecture room, neither too early or late, and found her seat without much question from the other students or the professor when he arrived; sure enough, right on schedule. She recognized his face. Professor Dexter Trar, renowned microbiologist and Dean of Medicine at the University of Alderaan.

Sure, she had thought about attending one of Trar's public lectures. Would've been easier than stressing over what to wear, trying to look and act the part of an upper-year xenobiology transfer student from the University of Sanbra. First impressions mattered. She only had one chance to get this right, herself. Approaching Trar as anything but a peer, he might not take her seriously. A com call or e-mail could be too easily ignored. It would be wiser to meet him in person. To put those espionage skills of hers to use.

The best part about being a technopath: Cheating. As the class began and the microbiology lecture went on, it gave her a tad more confidence, putting some of the scientific lingo she had learned barely a week ago into practice. Though if the teacher asked her a more complicated question, she could tap the answer from any datapad or laptop in the room. Or pick up the whispers of other students' answers to themselves, with her sensitive hearing. At least none of her replies sounded too far-fetched or stupid. Having miraculously stayed alert by the end of the two hours, she had (hopefully) survived the lecture without raising any suspicions.

She trailed behind as her classmates filtered out of the room and dispersed. No doubt others were keen on talking with the professor as well, so she waited her turn until she could catch up to him privately.

"Excuse me, Professor Trar?" She approached Darth Sorn Darth Sorn with a meek smile. Having long removed her sunshades, her violet eyes and pale face gleamed. If not beauty, then perhaps an aura of quiet confidence would work its charm. "I'm Layla Ferrant, xenobiology." She had nailed the uniform of her program, forged her student ID. With a touch of technopathy, in her presence, Layla's name and records would light up the screen of every scanner and computer on campus. "I just transferred here from Sanbra University. Are you full today? I was hoping to stop by your office so I could discuss some private research with you." She gestured to the briefcase in her hand.

It was always polite to give a heads up, as much as she could've dropped in unannounced during Trar's office hours. Students ought to be a teacher's number one priority. As far as direct access went to Trar, she had weaseled her way into the VIP line. Still, with the man being somewhat of a celebrity on campus, who knew if he had an unexpected appointment to keep?
