Seris had spent most of the journey trying to decide what she had done. Not what she had done wrong, necessarily. That distinction had become increasingly important the closer she came to Darth Reign's domain. She could think of several possibilities.
The soirée was the most obvious. She had spoken with Astra Sadow, crossed paths with figures considerably more important than herself, and—at least as far as Seris was concerned—managed not to embarrass herself in front of any of them. That alone felt like an accomplishment. She had gone there intending to be noticed. Apparently, she had succeeded.
That was the problem. Being noticed by someone like Darth Reign could mean almost anything. Seris adjusted the fall of her clothing as she walked, resisting the temptation to do so a second time moments later. She had chosen something formal enough to acknowledge whose presence she had been summoned into without dressing as though she were attending another party. Her lightsaber remained at her side. Leaving it behind had seemed foolish. Arriving armed might have seemed presumptuous under other circumstances, but she was Sith. Or at least she was trying very hard to become one.
The young acolyte's expression remained composed as she followed the route laid out for her, though beneath that practiced exterior her thoughts refused to cooperate. An assignment seemed likely. Perhaps something had been said at the soirée. Perhaps Astra had mentioned her afterward. That possibility had occurred to Seris more than once, although she had deliberately tried not to dwell upon it. She had enjoyed the woman's attention and advice, but assuming Astra Sadow had gone directly to Darth Reign afterward to sing the praises of some academy acolyte seemed spectacularly arrogant.
Seris was ambitious. She preferred not to be delusional.
Or perhaps Darth Reign wanted someone disposable for an unpleasant task. Seris couldn't entirely dismiss that possibility either. She slowed as she reached the appointed chamber, suddenly conscious of the fact that there was no longer any corridor left in which to speculate. Her stomach tightened. Stop it. Whatever Darth Reign wanted, she had wanted this.
Not this specifically. Seris had never been foolish enough to imagine the Dark Lord personally summoning her somewhere. But she had wanted to rise. She had wanted to be noticed. She had wanted opportunities beyond lectures, exercises, and waiting for someone else to decide she was ready. Well. Someone had noticed.
Seris drew herself straighter. The uncertainty didn't disappear. Neither did the nervousness. She simply refused to allow either one to dictate how she entered the room. When permission was given, Seris stepped inside. Her eyes immediately sought Darth Reign.
She approached far enough to properly acknowledge him before lowering herself respectfully, head bowed. "My Lord." For once, Seris resisted the urge to fill the silence simply because she didn't know what came next. She had been summoned. Darth Reign would tell her why. And whatever the answer was, Seris intended to make certain that when she left this place, he remembered why he had called for her in the first place.
