A Question of Duty

Kay stood a bit nervously at the Minister of Intelligence's office door. It was odd to feel a bit intimidated by a door, but she figured that she wasn't the first. So many thoughts were rolling around in her head as she tried to figure out what to say and how to say it. Or more importantly, how to describe her actions so that she didn't incriminate herself. The last thing that she needed was to be arrested or at worse, executed. But this was of course her thoughts being controlled by the fear of something that hadn't even happened yet and might not even happen at all. So worrying about it was unnecessary.

Forcing out her anxiety with a breath, Kay knocked on the door and awaited permission to enter.

Faith was in the reception area of her office when there was a gentle knock at the door. She looked a the door it served as a barrier between rooms, and people. She considered should she have the door removed. She held meetings in her office where a door was needed to prevent the leakage of intel.

Faith smoothed out her black pants suit, she had taken to wearing it a lot recently. Maybe she was slowly accepting that the family was gone. Or maybe she felt dark, who knew at this moment.

She reached for the door and pulled it open, Faith looked upon the woman standing there, "hello, can i help you?" she smiled. Acting like she was nobody at all.

The door opening caused her to take half a step back as irrational fear was beginning to take over again. But then the smile offered her hope. There were some in the Senate who's faces were like stone and not very pleasant to be around. But Faith appeared differently.

Kay had little knowledge of who was who, nor had she yet matched names to faces. There were a couple that she knew, the Prime Ministers and of course Senator Demici, but that was about it. Faith she recognized from the Senate meetings, but wasn't aware of her Ministry position, which was clearly demonstrated as she replied, "Yes, I was hoping to speak to the Minister of Intelligence. I have some....questions and concerns that I'd like to convey."

"Very well come in" Faith stepped back and away heading towards the door to her office, "please come sit I think I've seen you in the Senate chambers, is that right?" Faith walked slowly looking back to make sure the Senator followed.

"Let's get you comfortable" she knew that when people were comfortable they were able to speak more clearly their thoughts. And from the look in this woman wore she had something important to say.

Kay nodded in response to her question as she stepped into the office. "Yes. For the moment, I am the Senator of Commenor." She chose her words carefully as she wasn't quite sure of what will happen later on.

As for getting comfortable, she wasn't sure if she could be. At least not yet. Kay sat herself down on the very edge of a chair, resting her satchel on her lap and folding her hands on top of it. One could only assume that she was in the presence of the Minister she sought.

"I believe that in my....mission to end slavery, I might be breaking the law. Though no harm has been caused to the Republic."

Faith looked at her she could see it in her face she was concerned, and genuinely believed she had done something wrong. "Well tell me about it and we'll determine if you've really done something wrong"

Faith pressed a button to light up her receptionists desk that she was now in conference no calls or other visitors would be accepted. Unless they were needed to help determine cause.

"Tea?" Faith loved tea, she found it relaxing, perhaps something hot for Lady Kay would help her too

Tea. What a magical word of one of her most favourite things in the world. "Oh yes, please." Inside her satchel she had her own cup and saucer, detailing a bird that resembled a peacock of sorts ((picture on my character page)). Kay dug it out and held it in hand. "Do you have some prepared or would you like me to do it? I carry my own supply."

The idea of sharing some tea has for the moment, put her in a bit of ease and let her worries about possibly getting arrested or worse, told to end her crusade be set aside.

She must have said the right thing for within mere moments Lady Kay had her own cup, "I see, I actually drink a blend that was grown on Alderaan." Her Tia loved tea and had made sure one of the green houses was able to grow a blend that was a House Organa brand.

"But you are more than welcome to make what you have I'd be interested in a sample of the blend you carry" Faith called for a protocol droid who brought them a tray with piping how water, cups, lemon and sugar for those who needed it. Faith preferred hers plain.

She dug into her satchel again and produced a pouch. After setting her cup on the tray for a moment, Kay opened the pouch and took in the aroma of the tea leaves. "Sapir tea is my favourite. I find the taste to be perfection." She gathered a few leaves and placed them in both cups, allowing the protocol droid to pour the hot water. She then took her cup, never needing anything else and cradled it in her hands.

Less than ten seconds later, after putting her pouch back inside of her satchel, Kay cradled the cup in both hands and had a small sip. That was better.

But now it was time for business so to speak. And as her tea did make her feel a bit more comfortable, she still worried over what could happen. "I'm not sure of Senator Demici has told anyone, but my disruption of the slave trade by the Hutt Cartel has given me a large bounty on my head that is only activated while I am in Cartel territory. I have rescued many slaves, even saved some from the Jackals before they were to lose their freedom. Others have joined this cause and some, I'm afraid are not in much favour with the Republic..."

[member="Lady Kay"]

Faith had reports of individuals disrupting the slave trade currently they were looking for a citizen of Nar Shadaa [member="Breanna Volsh"] who also had a reputation for putting burrs under the slaver traders saddles.

"It is true there are individuals who are not in favor with the republic right now, but things do change, they can change those circumstances." Faith however nodded understanding why Lady Kay would feel the heat of the bounty on her.

Faith reached for the cup, warmth, she always loved the warmth a cup gave, "Are the Slave traders becoming more aggressive in seeking to fill the bounty?"

She sipped her tea and then nodded her head. "I am fortunate though to have many friends and allies in many different groups and governments that have helped me to elude capture on many occasions."

Kay traced the rim of her cup with one of her fingers, staring at it. So far so good. But it wasn't as though she had gone into any details yet. "Even some enemies of the Republic have chosen to help in my cause, at risk of getting caught by either side. They believe in what I am doing, regardless of the wars that others are fighting."

She never liked war. Always thought that it was stupid. Her late husband always sheltered her from it for her own safety. Instead he just had her stay behind to help the wounded to keep her curiosity and her stubborness off the battlefield so that he could concentrate. They both would often have friends on both sides of the conflict and that tended to make things even more complicated. But it always worked in their favour, as odd as that may be. Kay hoped that it would continue to do so now.

"I am aware of others in your same circumstances, fighting the good fight, and making friends across enemy lines. You should be commended, but you need to be careful. As a Senator there can be a time where what you are doing may seem to be harmful to the Republic."

Faith did not smile this time, there were too many who walked that fine thin line and expected to be not held accountable but that was not so. They were all accountable for their actions.

Course maybe she should recruit Lady kay to work for GRIM as she went against these slavers. Faith listened to the tale, carefully so that she could speak like she had a clue.

She sighed a little as she nodded. Being a Senator had it's perks, but it also had it's downsides too. "I know that it might...seem to be harmful if someone was to take the laws on working with the enemy at face value. But when you take a deeper look and have a better understanding, then one would find that it isn't harmful at all."

Kay had a sip of her tea. "In no way am I helping the One Sith in achieving their goals. I have avoided that conflict, perhaps in part due to my late appointment. But I have done well for Commoner too and some of the freed slaves are enjoying their new lives within the Republic. I don't feel as though I'm abusing my position. Yet I just wanted to know if I would be getting into trouble for my actions. If I need to, I can hire a lawyer."

Kay always took responsibility for what she did and never blamed others. She was also a really bad liar. That might not make her a great politician, but it did help her to always have someone that she could count on for help in any arena.

[member="Lady Kay"]

"If one were to take the laws on working with the enemy to mean treason?" Faith asked. Her dark eyes looked into the cup the surface of the tea reflected her own gaze back to her, the cup seemed endless.

Would she be in trouble for her actions, Faith had to be sure on this, "We just passed a law that always Senator [member="Cecily de Demici"] the ability to meet with criminals for treaty purposes." Faith sipped the tea closing her eyes enjoying the taste.

"Perhaps in your dealings with the Hutts, and other slavers, you learn something that could be helpful to the Republic. Would you share that with us?" This was a test of loyalties, where did Lady Kay's loyalties lie.

Her way of dealing with slavers was to help their slaves escape from under their noses. Yet it amazed her how many enemies of the Republic also hated slavery. Kay didn't want to be tried for treason, yet if it had to happen, then it would have to happen.

She sipped her tea and looked up to meet Faith's gaze as she asked her question. "Of course I would. If I were to learn of any plots against what we stand for, what I stand for, I would try to stop it and getting help from others in the Republic would be a part of it." At least a part of it where she wouldn't be trying to take care of it herself. Stubborness was a weakness of hers.

Her loyalties seemed intact the Republic would be notified. This made Faith relax a bit [member="Lady Kay"] did not seem to be the conspirator type. She was the worried citizen of the galaxy that wanted to be sure her actions were not going to land her in a prison cell for conspiring with slavers.

“If your operation is as you say, perhaps you wouldn’t mind adding one of our agents to your entourage to gather intelligence and help you should a situation come up that puts your life in danger” It was a duty to keep the citizens safe.

It was also a duty to gather intelligence that aided in the fight against all the Republic stood for.

Her life was always in danger. Even in the Senate chambers she felt the same way. So she always felt it best to do things on her own so that others wouldn't be in danger.

Kay sipped her tea as she thought about how to turn down her request, but not make it sound suspicious. "I don't have an entourage. I mostly work alone. The less people around me that get hurt, the better. However, it seems that I have a Jedi following me around by the name of [member="Mantic Dorn"] . Someone has asked him to tail me like a shadow and I don't know who."

A little misdirection, but she honestly didn't know who had sent him or why. Maybe she was putting herself into too much danger from the Cartel. It was hard to say at the moment.

"You're a Senator, you should have an assistant, one who makes sure your calendar is kept. One who can be distracting, and yet observant." Faith understood why if she was working on keep a low profile.

Faith believed in allowances being made. "Getting a handle on our opposition, having the right amount of intelligence could give us the upper hand needed in any future battles. I'd like you to reconsider the offer of having someone from GRIM with you."

Faith would have to look into [member="Mantic Dorn"] and see if anyone knew why he was following Lady Kay about.

"Does your tea need to be refreshed"

She sighed a little under her breath as she didn't always travel to represent the Senate or Commoner. Sometimes she just travelled as herself, needing no formalities or politics. There was just her own personal mission.

But if she were to be trusted, she figured that she would have to consent to the Minister's wishes. "Alright, someone may come with me and pretend to be my assistant. But I hope that they don't lecture me too much on the people that I am allied with..."

Kay held out her cup to top it up. "Thank you."

For the eyes of the minister of intelligence, [member="Faith Balor-Organa"]

A quick check on the Jedi padawan that had been mentioned reveals nothing extraordinary apart from that he had been instructed by the jedi order to accompany senator [member="Lady Kay"] on a diplomatic mission to the world of Atrisia as the sith moved to seize control over their local senate and its ruling Emperor.
Mantic Dorn has been used as escort for several senators since although this specific mission was considered very dangerous. What may or may not be a coincidence is that after their trip to Atrisia Padawan Dorn immideately requested a meeting with the master of the shadow jedi, [member="Kian Karr"] - if he was admitted and what might have been the purpose of that meeting is not filed. Padawan Dorn is not listed as a shadow himself.
