A Noblesse Oblige to Quality

[member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

Ah, as she finished speaking Camellia noted what was being said by her fellows gathered together. Caid Centurion truly had some decent points, though in truth Rendili Stardrive's CEO believed he was being overly paranoid. In fact, his concerns were opposite of reality. Everything was rather detrimental to Rendili aside from requiring to effect major repairs. All the same, the Admiral did have some very fine points nonetheless. After all, if something were going on like that, then Cam would likely be very anxious about it too. Still, it wasn't and she intended to allay those fears of his post haste. "You have some very good points Admiral, however, they are in fact far off the mark. The opposite of the reality even. You see by putting all the cost upfront and effecting the very fine tuned point of maintenance, the Rendili Stardrive will see very little service. All the engineers and maintenance crews on the Noblesse Class will only have to take a damaged section of rail out of the alignment, bring a spare from storage up, and install it in place and secure it. Its a simple task that just requires delicate care to remove and install the rails, which will be sectioned off at quite small sizes, which as said increases the ship's cost immensely but will make repairs very very simple. Rendili Stardrive will have to effect major repairs on the ship because damage to the superstructure can offset the balance of the railgun since its tied into the hull itself. Another shipyard wouldn't know about it as we designed the weapon and appreciate it being a competitive edge over other naval shipwrights. If Rendili truly wished to make a profit on all maintenance we'd make it a single solid rail so that any damage would require us to dig into the superstructure which only we could do. By designing it with many miniature rails we assure that the Engineers onboard can perform repairs themselves quickly, efficiently, and without major keels and support. You'll only need to bring in Noblesse class ships if they suffer heavy damage, or if the engineers fail to properly maintain the main gun over time correctly. Is there any other questions on that?"

Caid Centurion

Caid kept his gaze locked on [member="Camellia Swift"] as she offered a...response to his statements. The actual reality was that...nothing she'd just said made any amount of sense. At least, it didn't make any sense to him, and it didn't even answer the most important question he had asked. "I appreciate you making repair of the rail gun, a single element of the entire brand-new vessel class, simple for crews. However, that only adds legitimacy to my point. You have front-loaded a cost because you designed one of the weapon's systems to be easy to fix? Let me paint the picture of how everything you've said thus far is being received by me because I know it's how the politicians are going to see things."

Caid paused as he shifted in his seat slightly to face Camellia squarely. "Rendili would like to inflate the cost of the Noblesse over the typical rate for similar vessels of its size and capability. This is due almost solely to the addition of a new rail gun weapons system that is not presently in use on any other Republic vessels. The inflation in cost accounts for maintenance and resource costs on the part of Rendili machining the weapon in such a form that it is composed of several smaller rails instead of one larger rail. This way if superficial to moderate damage is sustained to that weapons system, crews can simply replace damaged rail segments." Managing a thin smile, Caid continued, "That is basically what you're telling them, and it actually sounds reasonable. Here are the additional questions that will come right back to your organization. How many replacement rails are you providing with initial purchase? How much does a rail segment cost should we desire to purchase more? How much will the training of crews to operate the system, period, cost? How much will it cost to train crews on operation of the entire ship, period? What happens when the vessel sustains heavy damage to several areas of the ship, including the railgun? Will we have to partially repair the vessel in one of our shipyards and then take it to Rendili for work on the railgun?"

Waving a dismissive hand, Caid backed off the rhetoric for about...five seconds. "Am I making sense? It's not as simple as you want to make it...especially if you're not willing to train any maintainers on how to manage severe damage to the railgun. You're basically forcing us to bring every Noblesse-class vessel all the way to Rendili for repairs, mid-life overhauls, etc. Is there a problem with Rendili personnel coming to another location to effect major repairs to the railgun? Logistically and tactically speaking having only one shipyard to use for depot-level maintenance on an entire class of vessel is neither intelligent nor cost effective. Not to mention, it will require the Republic investing even more money to increase security in the system because it's only a matter of time before people come to understand we can only work on the Noblesse-class in one location." Exhaling heavily, Caid rubbed his temples slightly. "Captain - you have a great design here, and I'm not trying to be all up in your business...but it's my job to ask the tough questions. If we don't have answers to these questions, I absolutely will not present the program to the Senate and it just won't receive final funding authority. Also while I'm on the subject of Republic needs and interests in this, all of your employees will be subjected to a secondary security screening by Republic Intelligence over a timespan of the next couple months."

Pausing, Caid turned his head to regard [member="Lorelei Darke"]. "Same goes for KDY. I'm certain this has been done in the past for all new hires and yearly reviews for existing employees, but I prefer not to assume as I've no record of it from my predecessor." Focusing his attention solely on Camellia again, Caid attempted to bring the point of his comments full circle. "I'm merely the messenger here, but as we move forward in the production process, I just want to be sure we're all abreast of the realities. However, I'm sure you have a comment or two of your own, Captain."

Oh now the Admiral was getting into the points that Camellia could see the merit of. How astute of him, those are all really valid. I know he won't like some of the answers though. She saw where she failed to cover these essential considerations. The Rendili Stardrive CEO would have to admit she had been confused and only believed that the Republic Admiral had meant more on the issue of the repairs themselves, but he had a much wider scope than she assumed. Part of her wanted to grit her teeth because some of the points brought up she had hoped to take advantage of. Rendili was rather important to her, she had partially kept things close hoping for additional security for the system. Admittedly though she had not thought about some of the other problems the senate may have either.

Cam knew she was being focused on now, what she said next could make or break the project. Knowing this, she took a careful breathe as she thought everything over carefully and tried thinking through it all to respond accurately and successfully. "Yes. . . i see what you mean now. To be honest not all of those concerns have been addressed yet. Stress testing of the weapon has been underway, however, it is open to determine what can be considered reasonable for the number of replacement rails for the on board maintenance crews to have access to. A full year of what could be considered active service assuming activity in wartime will probably be the offer my financial analysts would suggest is our peak offer. As for the price of each individual rail segment, rest assured each is far less expensive to make and are not difficult to produce, in my opinion I doubt the purchase of more rail segments for each ship should the supply run out on board will be a minor concern since it would take a year unless any ship ends up in constant combat beyond estimated parameters which have been based off the more aggressive campaigns of the sith in the last few years already."

As for the other questions. . . . "As for your other questions. I believe a larger shipyard like Kuat could indeed have the facilities to take apart the ship if Rendili were to send its engineers and overseers to oversee and handle the process of taking the ships apart in the case of sustained damage posing a threat to the superstructure. And I believe I did mention superficial damage being a minor issue unless the bulkheads are broken through significant layers. Anything that poses a threat to the integrity of the rails, such as enemy fire buckling the ship's hull and moving the entirety of the structure out of alignment, even if by a few meters. Its a similar issue for Coilguns except their don't normally get built into the hull as snugly as this weapon will be. So if its just overhauls or moderate damage I believe other yards can handle it with a crew shipped out, which we can negotiate fees over. I do insist major issues be brought to Rendili for inspection and evaluation because it could lead to improvements on the design for the Republic to prevent the the Noblesse Class from requiring the same level of repairs in the future. If you do insist on heavily allowing other companies crews to be allowed to take it apart and be given the data on how, I would have to insist as the CEO that proper legal protections be put in place to protect the patent of the technology to prevent conflict between corporate bodies."

Hopefully that didn't sound as if she was being some greedy businesswoman, but Camellia felt a little defensive on that point. Allowing another shipyard and its crews to fully take apart a Noblesse meant allowing them to see its full construction and detail the schematics and engineering for themselves. Perhaps even allowing the other shipwrights to reproduce or improve the design for themselves to oust the Rendili vessel. She was dedicated to the Republic, but she also didn't want her homeworld's major production facility being taken advantage of either. It was hard to see how to balance it and also try to express her desires to cooperate as well as not be cheated. "Rendili will offer training for the maintenance of the railgun with little additional fees. We've considered it into the upfront cost. As each vessel is built we can bring in the Republic teams and have our own engineers show them around and give them the run down on long term operation. As for the crews they must only be wary of the fact the ship's main gun can only fire forward, though that is common of several ships with large mass driver systems. The only additional concern would be to be able to tell when the gun is too significantly damaged and would need repairs before firing again. The Noblesse class will include sensor systems to indicate the status of the rails as well as provide indication of how ship integrity is and if anything is knocked out of alignment. We don't foresee many issues for that unless the ship is gutted in heavy combat, but all the same we want a crew to be able to tell if something has malfunctioned or there has been sabotage or enemy strategic strikes. As for your request to screen all employees I understand and approve it. We do our own screening but it is understood in our company contracts that employees must be open to additional security procedures depending on their ongoing projects need."

Tricia looked at the woman as she was talking and rubbed her hands together. Her head tilting just a little as she was sifting through the surface thoughts letting her eyes flicker bright silver. "Well that certainly sounds like a good way to do it and I support you. Just tell me when I should throw something to point out the flaws and I'll throw some of those old fighters you want to scrap." She yawned floating up towards the ceiling while just stretching out to sleep.

Vaudin Miir had been in his office sipping on a cup of spiced tea when he had heard of the meeting in progress. A new ship, a new design and one that was pitched to be a great boon for the republic. The dry heat of his office was much like his home world of iktotch and he was loath to leave it without a very good reason. His small wire framed reading glasses rested low on his nose as he read through the various reports destined for the internal affairs committee table. To say that some very interesting things happened in the republic would be quite the understatement. His small cup lifted from his desk looking even more delicate than it truly was in his oversized hands. A small chrip from his desk comlink stopped him mid sip and he calmly moved to activate the system and hear the no doubt pressing matter that demanded he be interrupted.

"Yes?" He said still reading a report of a security breach on Korriban...again.

"Senatot Miir, the Senate asked you to go to a meeting in progress about a new ship design. It seems some other participants are briefly needed elsewhere."

"Thank you, Leena. I'll go right now."

"You're welcome senator."

Vaudin sat his cup down and rose from his black nerf hide seat and rounded his desk calmly grabbing his comlink and datapad for obvious reasons. He locked his office behind him as he left for the turbo lift and the breif speeder ride that would deposit him at the appropriate building in the appropriate amount of time.

He walked down the well lit corridor, through the security checkpoints, and entered his security clearance at the designated hatch. Inside were several people he didn't know and a few he knew by name alone. He nodded to the group and found an open seat and deposited himself unceremoniously on his backside.

"Good day ladies and gentlemen." He said sitting back in his seat and folding his hands over his abdomen, "the senate has asked me to come and keep this meeting moving along while Admiral Centurion answers a quick call that his on hold as we speak. He will of course be welcomed to continue his line of questions when he returns."

Vaudin in typical fashion looked at the ladies present and offered a small smile before moving into his own questions.

"I was breifed that the maintenance of the Noblesse-class would be only done by Rendili is that correct?"

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

The arrival of a senator and the disappearance of the Admiral were not things Camellia had expected. In fact it was rather bothersome and possibly bad news considering she was quite worried a politician might not understand what she was saying quite like the Admiral or other Military officers and business CEOs had. Of course it seemed as if she was right when he made his first remark. "I'm sorry senator but that isn't entirely correct. Only repairs that involve traumatic damage to the superstructure or the railgun system as a whole will. Basic repair and maintenance for hull damage and wear and tear can still be checked out by other drydocks easily enough. However, the ships should come in to Rendili for overhaul once every five years even should they incur no damage to maintain peak performance, though that is just a suggestion. The rails just being wore down from use can be handled by on board technicians with just brief training and instruction. If you would like an aide to provide a quick run down or recording on everything else mentioned if you need feel free to request one to help simplify anything if I'm being confusing. I apologize if I am."

"I can follow you fine Ms. Swift. Can I call you Ms. Swift?" He said leaning forward on to his elbows. "If that is all and you're willing to train republic military techs then I'm satisfied. We can agree no competing company has access to your designs and in return you train military engineers to do all necessary repairs that the ship could conceivably need."

Vaudin took out his datapad and made some notes.

"I also read background checks were discussed and I am currently working on that for everyone in this room and military technicians will undergo further checks in the coming weeks." He cleared his throat wishing he didn't have to be so formal, "Now if you're ready I'd like to hear the rest of the proposal and see this design in action. Prints and projected numbers are great but if she can't perform then we're wasting our time."

Vaudin leaned back and waited to be impressed.

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

That was a fair deal then, at least it seemed so to the CEO. Still, she would have to let the financial analysts for the company actually see about what the determinable value was. Regardless, for the moment it seemed like Rendili Stardrive would get what it wanted, and the Republic Navy would get what it needed. The Noblesse class would be the most powerful vessel that the shipyards of Rendili ever produced to date. Truly it would be a design befitting one of the founding shipwrights of the galaxy.

As for the security checks, since those were already agreed to, Camellia had little complaints with the senator also insisting on them. They were reasonable and sensible, and she had every intention of running her own checks to ensure safety measures were in place. Once this was all done of course, and they seemed to be getting much closer to that point. Especially when the senator asked for them to move on to an actual field test. "Right, we have one of the prototypes already prepared, however, if anyone else has any questions themselves first feel free. Otherwise we can head down to the hanger where a shuttle awaits us to take us aboard the prototype in a test zone."

Tricia had no questions she was ready to begin, while she understood human's insistance she didn't like asking the same thing a million times and expecting a different answer. It was something lost on her as she just hovered there listening with her eyes closed and body perched ready to begin.

Vaudin made a show of looking at everyone in turn.

"Nobody? Nothing?" He said, " No 'how big are the refresher's'? No 'Does it come in pink?' Good. Lets go."

Vaudin stood and adjusted his shirt. His datapad went in a pocket and he motioned for the young Ms. Swift to escort him to the shuttle. Such a gentleman Vaudin was, really he was. He was happy to fall in with the others that chose to go and make there way to the shuttle. His grey eyes scanned as they walked. An old habit from his former employment. He was more than glad to get on a ship and be going to one that with out a doubt he would be commandeering the next time the republic's need required him to do what others would not.

"What is your favorite part about the Noblesse-class?" He asked just making small talk as they walked and he wondered if she was single.

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

Camellia just didn't want any complaints to be raised was all, she was giving plenty of opportunities for anyone with any questions or concerns to voice them so that later no one could make a big deal out of things and pretend that she hadn't. It was all going onto record for later security and review purposes. Still, Rendili Stardrive's CEO had wished that Caid Centurion hadn't left just yet, his questions were quite relevant and helped explain so many things for everyone else. No one else seemed to be having the same thoughts as the Republic Admiral had had, or any for that matter. The Senator was a blunt and forward man who seemed to care about getting the job done, though his manner and sarcasm could certainly use an improvement.

Not that Camellia was going to complain about moving things along to their final conclusion. The only part of the presentation left was to seal the deal with a display of the Noblesse's power. So once the Senator stood up, Camellia motioned for the others still gathered to come along as well as she left the meeting room and led them through the station back towards the hangers where a shuttle awaited them all to bring them to the prototype and where it would be showcasing its major features. "Well Senator Miir, I believe it would either be its main cannon or its expanded hanger frame. Both are impressive and important features, though Mr. Quee likely prefers the Aegis class anti-concussion generator."

Vaudin Miir

Planetary President of Iktotch
[member="Camellia Swift"]

"A good main cannon is essential to most engagements." He said in agreement, "but I enjoy a filled hanger."

He looked at his chrono as they went up toward the shuttles and noted he would not make it home for his evening routine but he supposed it was better than being stuck in the Senate chambers listening to some poor intern reading budget request outloud to a bunch of old bureaucrats.

"I am sorry I missed it but how do you project it will hold up against the Sith's captial class ships if they end up going blow for blow?" He was a practical man and henliked to know a ship could take a hit and keep firing. He offered an arm to the lady as he stepped out of the turbo lift and walked toward the shuttle and then happliy got in to head to the Noblesse-class prototype.

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

Stepping into the Shuttle's passenger quarters, Camellia was actually feeling quite refreshed and was glad they were moving along again. The Senator was a good support in pushing the others into getting through the rest of the presentation and meeting. It felt like it had been dragging on for much much longer than just the few hours they had really spent. "I can assure you senator then you will enjoy the Noblesse's hanger bay, it has quite a lot of ample space. We'll be filling it with only our most advanced designs as well, so hopefully we'll crush any Sith that come our way." Yes, the Noblesse would be a true engineering marvel. However, it was certainly a much more complicated and brutish way to go about dealing with Sith space supremacy, and even at that it would stand against the One Sith's monstrous Darkblade only because it was a whole tonnage above it.

Which was an appropriate thought since the Senator was basically asking about that once the Shuttle exited the station's hanger bay and began to edge toward the hyperspace point. They were just going to stay in system, but keep the test away from the traffic of local space and the station in case things went wrong. Cam just didn't like to take chances. ""I won't lie we had to put more work in than the Sith have to match their efforts. The Noblesse can go gun for gun against the Darkblade class we've encountered before. However, since the Noblesse's final design will be 400-800 meters longer and a hundred or so meters taller that sadly means we're building a ship of a bigger class to begin with. The Noblesse will have a longer range though with its main gun. Defense wise the Darkblade has more shields, but the Noblesse carries an Aegis class concussion field generator to nullify their Hypervelocity gun and to act as a secondary barrier if the main shields fail. As a bonus though the Noblesse class does have a hanger bay though to support itself, we're hoping to fit three to five squadrons inside if we can. We went over much of these debates earlier. I can provide you a copy of that part of the meeting."

They would exit hyperspace not long after she finished speaking. Up ahead would be the prototype of the Noblesse, smaller than the actual class would be in mass production, mostly just for show for the frame and the system testing. There also appeared to be a small number of sizable asteroids nearby as well.

He listened as the small ship made a short jump to hyperspace. His sharp grey eyes looked out the viewport at the ship and noted the size difference from the product and the schematics.

"So you had to invest more into the ship just to counter the Sith's destroyers." Hr said looking at the ship, "I hope it's worth the cost Ms. Swift."

He waited and held his comments unit they landed.

"can I read your follow up reports to see the difference between you projected numbers beside the actual numbers?" He said next.

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

As they began their approach on the prototype of the Noblesse, Camellia nodded somberly to the Senator as she responded to his remark about putting more in to match the Sith before they entered the hanger bay. "We had to invest more to make a larger ship due to the rush of the production so that the vessel's series would be readied for action sooner. Not to mention Rendili began the project ahead of time on its own, hence the Prototype already being completed as a proof of concept for this meeting just to get Republic funding for the upscaled production. However, it will certainly be among the best classes of warship in the galaxy once put into production. It should be able to match almost anything the One Sith have in their arsenal when we get it out."

Finishing her words as the shuttle touched down in the hanger, Camellia motioned for the gathered party to follow her to the bridge, leading them down the hallways and corridors past the crewmen selected personally by the Rendili Stardrive CEO from a roster of Rendili's Home Defense Fleet members. All naval personnel whose loyalty to Rendili was utmost and who were qualified to run the ship, alongside Rendili Stardrive shipwright technicians keeping track of the main gun in its prototype stage. "Also yes Senator Miir, we can certainly send over the documents and reports once we've compiled the files on the actual results from these tests and initial production values. I'm certain though that everything will fall within expected parameters of deviation from our estimates even if we're not one hundred percent correct."

They would reach the bridge shortly, where the final presentation would begin.

"Excellent." he said as they walked along and the senator snuck a peek at the woman's behind. Old habits died hard. "I look forward to seeing more."

They walked down the corridor and the doors parted for them as they walked on to the bridge and were greeted by the view port.

"ATTENTION ON DECK." The executive officer called out causing everyone to stop and come to excellent naval attention.

"Impressive crew Ms. Swift." He said nodding, "May i watch from the view port?"

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

Camellia returned the salutes given by the bridge crew as she and the senator, along with the rest of the gathered cadre, appeared for the presentation test of the prototype Noblesse. "At ease." As everyone returned to their posts, the Republic Commodore and Rendili Stardrive CEO would move to the viewport herself as Senator Miir requested permission to do the same. "Of course Senator. In fact I would prefer it if you and everyone else did watch the test of the main gun with an optimal view. If you end up preferring to watch the test on the main screen then you are free to do so as well. Everything has been prepared, the ship is ready to fire whenever we're ready so everyone just say when they are prepared so no one misses a thing."

Vaudin took a spot in front of the view port and was handed a cup of caff. He took the cup and sipped it casually.

"Needs whiskey." He muttered to himself as he looked out at the asteroid field.

He looked back at the crew and counted heads. He looked at the distance between stations and the lay out of the bridge. It was a captain's ship a good leader could give orders from the tactical command area and be heard by any one of the crew. It was well designed.

"Well, Ms. Swift." He said sipping his caff and winking at a lieutenant, "ready when you are."

[member="Vaudin Miir"] [member="Lorelei Darke"] [member="Jaxon Wyatt"] [member="Tricia"] [member="Gir Quee"] [member="Taran Holt"] [member="Slate Estrada"] [member="Blackhot"] [member="Caid Centurion"]

Nodding to the Senator as he and the others gave their assent to begin the test, Camellia moved to the officer on duty and conversed with the crewman shortly to make sure everything was indeed prepared as requested. The Noblesse prototype had been up and running all day, tests being run and calibrations made ahead of time. The main gun had been aligned properly and the firing frequencies for all cannons had been calculated and set. The reactor was fully operational and everything was on track. the asteroid hauled into position to be the weapons target was off in the distance and on the main screen. No need for delays then. "Then if I can ask everyone to watch, either from the viewport or the display screens. Helm, bring the ship to face the target's coordinates and have our gunnery crew prepare to fire."

In truth the weapon had already been test fired. It would be foolish to show a failure after all, but a demonstration looked so much better than a bland report, especially to politicians. The Noblesse Prototype would begin to turn, space swiveling about outside the viewscreen as a blotch of stars was blocked from view by an asteroid in the distance now lined up ahead of the destroyer. communications were online and the voices of the gunnery crews and maintenance staff for the main gun would come through, relaying any adjustments for the ship's forward gun as energy readings on the displays would spike in conjunction with the Linear Accelerator Cannon gaining power. Then there would be a brief moment as calculations were double checked for the sake of accuracy before Camellia would call out. "Fire."

And then the ship would rumble, felt on the bridge as the oversized slug being propelled along the rail lines along the length of the ship passed along its way before bursting from the forward gun's exit point, barreling through space as it flew towards its target. The the round itself would disappear from view momentarily as it passed out of sight until it would come up on the visual enhancement displays as it neared its destination: the asteroid set up only to be shattered. The chunk of rock would blow apart as the round impacted with it at max velocity, slamming into it and fissure lines appearing across the space rock's surface before the railgun's slug crashed into its core and the spiderweb of cracks fell apart with the asteroid crumbling to pieces.

"Like what you see Senator? If so then I would like permission to ask Lady Tricia to use her powers to propel the chunks of debris at the vessel."

Tricia looked at them talking and continued forward, her body floating but she was finally... finally seeing something. Mostly worried she might be old by the time while the talk of the cannon appeared and she was watching on the screen from above the one mans shoulder. "Ohh" This was getting exciting but she pushed herself to keep looking for the cannon to go off before clapping. "Very pretty and timely I was starting to feel the technobabble would go on forever." She didn't need to turn just remained there looking at the man she was near. "I don't want to miss the rest."
