Private A Home Worth Dying For

UZAIFVP.png

It had been several weeks since Caelan had been to Coruscant. With the return of his Kingdom to his control, he'd been heavily occupied with righting everything that had been done to it by the people that had attacked it. That was an ongoing process, and it wasn't going to be resolved anytime soon. Still, he had other obligations as well, and having regional governors installed allowed him to take some of the pressure off of himself to manage everything. There was still his duty as a Jedi to be considered, and given the recent events on Hapes, that seemed like it was only going to be an increasingly difficult part of his life.

Upon his return, Grandmaster Noble had made a request of him. It seemed there was some sort of dispute between several individuals and a housing owner in one of the lower levels revolving around fair and equal housing. A request had been made by the owner of the housing that the Jedi intervene on their behalf with the tenants because the tenants were being hostile. Having spent time living in the lower level when he'd first fled his home after his parents were killed, he could understand what the landlord was dealing with. It was pretty rough down there. There were, however, good people that lived there as well, so he refused to just accept the landlord's assertion that the tenants were at fault.

He wasn't going it alone, however. He'd been asked to take another padawan along with him, one that he didn't know. Having been told where to find her, he'd made his way towards the temple's gardens in search of a white-haired woman. He'd met Echani before, and he found them a fascinating people, but he didn't know their musical talents. He was surprised to find that the woman he was looking for was playing a flute, its notes lilting through the air and drawing him in her direction. Even though he knew they had a task to complete, he found himself standing off to the side and just listening to her play. She was really quite good.

"That was beautiful," he said when she finished her song. "I didn't want to interrupt while you were playing but are you, by chance, Everest Vale? My name is Caelan Valoren and I was told I could find her here by Grandmaster Noble."

A droid peeked its head up from within the hood of its robe and watched her in a manner belying curiousity.

Location: Temple Gardens, Coruscant
Outfit: Padawan Robes, Spring Tunic
Equipment: Training Lightsaber, Uneti Flute, Small Backpack

It had been a difficult month for Everest. After Jedha, it felt like her world had collapsed in on her for a while. Then she watched the news reels of Hapes from Coruscant, and a further heartbreak set in. But Master Noble's kindness had helped her to fill that fresh, painful void that had tore through her, and as time went on she could admit to herself that she was — truly — starting to heal.

Part of that healing, for her, was the construction of her new uneti wood flute. It had been years since she played the flute, and as she returned to the traditional songs of rural southern Eshan, she was reminded of the warm hearth of home, the smell of home cooking, the soft fur of Cid against her face, the soft smile of her mother. But here, in the gardens of the Coruscant temple, there was another warmth that came to her, and as she played she was invoking — inadvertently — a profound sense of calm in all who had been lucky enough to hear her humble recitation.

She concluded her piece and, eyes closed, enjoyed the silence that followed a moment, but it took only a moment before she realised she had an observer. She could feel it first, behind closed eyelids, the subtle refraction against the natural stillness that hung about the gardens. Her eyes fluttered open to see the Padawan to her side. His handsome ruggedness and scar along his face made him instantly recognisable. She smiled at him.

"Thank you," she said a little timidly, suddenly shy about having an audience. "Yes. Eve," she told him as she placed the flute delicately into a fabric bag and into her backpack. She had heard from Master Noble that she was to expect a local mission coming her way, but wasn't sure when. She nevertheless had spent the last day or so steeling herself. It would be the first time she was going to see action since...

She stood, and gave a respectful bow to the young man. "Caelan, isn't it? My Master told me to expect you. Something about a mission?" Her eyes flitted to the small droid head that popped up from out of his backpack, and she grinned sheepishly, giving a small, shy wave. She was never any good with droids, but this one? What a cutie.

She had a nice smile and a pleasant demeanor. Seemed hard to come by these days. Most of the other padawans he knew were absolute terrors when it came down to it. Course, it could just be that he was a bit too rigid. Product of his upbringing and everything he'd been through of late.

"It's nice to meet you, Eve," he said, stepping forward and offering his hand to her. "Master Noble is a friend of mine. She accompanied me when I traveled to Hurikane to retrieve my lightsaber crystal and helped thwart an attempt on my life. She also assisted in retaking my world from those who attacked it."

Establishing a connection was good. They may not share a master, but they had a connection through her beyond the fact that Valery was the grandmaster of the order. And it seemed that she was enthused about the appearance of Fate, who promptly jumped up onto Caelan's shoulder and stuck out his foot towards her for a shake of his own. Show that droid any affection and he was going to love you for life. Probably why he always wanted to go and see Master Noble when they visited.

"This is Fate, by the way. He accompanies me pretty much everywhere."

Sometimes the droid was a little bit too nosy.

"There's a housing dispute in the lower levels that Master Noble would like us to look into. My understanding is the owner of the establishment has requested our assistance with tenants that he describes as unruly, behind on rent, and refusing to vacate. The security forces are apparently too busy to help."

He shrugged at the last bit. Down there, security didn't really do much anyway. What security forces existed down there tended to be bought and paid for by some criminal group or other and didn't really care about upholding the law. If the landlord wasn't in with one of those groups, and Caelan assumed he wasn't given the ask of the Jedi, then it made sense he wasn't going to get any help from them.

"Need to grab anything before we go or are you ready now?"

The little droid looked at Eve expectantly and Eve, in turn, gave a timid smile. Droids were... strange to Eve. They were like animals, except not? In many ways, they were more unpredictable that animals, who at least she could understand with relative ease. But droids, who know what was going on in all that circuitry. Nevertheless, Eve couldn't deny how sweet Fate looked, poking out of from Caelan's robe, holding out his little foot. She couldn't help but oblige the sincerity of the little guy.
"Nice to meet you, Fate," she said, taking his foot and giving a very gentle. She wasn't sure how delicate these things could be, after all. He seemed to give a whirr of delight which caused a small giggle to escape her. Maybe droids weren't so bad after all.

She turned her attention back to the matter at hand, as Caelan briefed her on what to expect. A simple dispute seemed simple enough, though a part of her struggled to understand why people couldn't just... get along, and she furrowed her brow a little at the thought of conflict between others. With any luck, today would go off without a hitch, and they could help find some kind of agreement that would satisfy both parties, so she hoped, perhaps a little naively.

"Need to grab anything before we go or are you ready now?"

Her thought immediately turned to her backpack.
"My flute," she said. "I'd rather leave it here. I'll meet you here shortly?"

And with that, she flew down through the hallways of the temple to her dorm. By the time she had arrived, whilst she found herself lost in thought about the mission, it suddenly dawned on Eve who Caelan actually was. She had been adamantly watching the news feeds of Hapes from the safety of the temple, heart breaking all the while. But Caelan was right there in the palace, right at the epicentre of all the chaos that ensued on the planet. She furrowed her brow as she made her way back to the gardens, hurting for him, and all the others. She didn't know him, but that didn't make a difference to her.

"Ready," she told him when shes finally made it back. She didn't have much else on her, but she hoped that a training lightsaber would suffice for this situation. With any luck, she wouldn't need to even use it. "C-Caelan," she said, before they moved, and a stillness took hold between them for a moment as she formulated her next words. Watching everything unfold on Hapes had been utterly devastating to her. The very thought of war perhaps made her weep for all those affected, more than it scared her directly. She wondered silently how the Prince of Lazerian IV might be handling it all, plus whatever else may have weighed on those shoulders.
"Hapes... I—" She frowned, frustrated at herself for not knowing the right words. But finally, they came, simple and honest. "I'm glad you're okay."

Fate was definitely pleased about having his foot shaken. He whirred in delight before dropping back down into Caelan's hood. Even out of sight he was beeping and chattering away about how polite the new girl was and how he enjoyed the fact that she treated him like another person rather than just a droid. Caelan could only smile and shake his head at it all. Fate had never been very much like most droids. He had a real personality, probably something to do with years out in exploration. Most droids were just machines programmed to do. In fact, most tended to be annoying.

"Sure. We'll wait for you here," he said when she mentioned putting the flute away.

He watched her go and then leaned against one of the nearby trees. Though she had shaken Fate's leg when he'd offered it, she seemed hesitant to do so. Was there some animosity there between her and droids? Had something happened to her? He wondered about that while she was gone, his mind pondering that and their mission until she returned and he heard his name being spoken, albeit hesitantly. Why was speaking as if something was wrong with saying his name? Was she scared?

Then she mentioned Hapes and that she was glad he was alright and his demeanor softened further. He offered her a smile and reached out to place a hand upon her shoulder.

"Thank you, but I assure you I'm doing just fine. I have seen my fair share of turmoil this past year, it's true, but it's shaped me into who I am now. For the better, I think, since I must serve both as a Jedi and as a leader for my people."

He let his hand fall away and then motioned towards the exit to the gardens.

"Shall we? I have an airspeeder waiting for us."

Eve was in awe with his resolve. As Caelan spoke of his duties as both Jedi and Prince, she realised how woefully simple her own life was in comparison to some of the people in the Order she worked with. It wasn't envy that she felt, but rather some vague sense of inadequacy for what she had to show for herself, or lack thereof. Nevertheless, the prince's resolute attitude inspired her, and she gave a gentle but assured nod to his words.

"Shall we? I have an airspeeder waiting for us."
"Mhm," she affirmed somewhat timidly, recalling the only few instances she had been on a speeder, all of which only since becoming a Jedi. Each time, it sent a lurch through her stomach. Nevertheless, she steeled herself for another experience moving at unnatural speeds. Where were the horses when she needed them?

They made their way down to the speeder pads. Away from main temple complex, the polluted smell of the city became ever more prevalent, attacking Eve's nostrils without discrimination. Every time she had to breathe it in properly, it made her nauseous. But this time, she would have to put up with it. The journey itself down to the lower levels was 'pleasant' enough, if one could consider moving at high velocity through a sterile hellscape of man-made structures pleasant. Yet as the sun spilled through the towering structures before them, casting shadows and twinkling against metal and glass, Eve did find a strange sense of magic about it. Alas, it was only an inkling.

The lower city was far worse than the upper levels. The place rank of a cocktail of scents thick in the air; smoke, stale alcohol, miscellaneous grime, vomit. Eve couldn't help but pull her sleeve over her mouth as they walked through the thrumming lower districts steeped in a harsh poverty. She had never seen something like this before, and it sent chills down her spine that anyone was forced to live here like this. Her eyes threatened to water, and she wasn't sure if it was from how upsetting the whole scene was, or from all the pungent smells that threatened her sense of smell. She tried to take her mind off of it all.

"So, we're going to the landlord first?"

UZAIFVP.png

The flight was rather nondescript. It was typical, but comfortable. The speeders that the royal family utilized were well-made and came with a lot of comfort. It often made him feel as if people would look at him and think poorly of him because of the fact he rode around in style rather than in a cheap speeder, but it was available to him and so he was going to use it. He didn't look down on anyone, except perhaps the Sith, but even they weren't above being saved if the opportunity arose.

They landed in the lower city and he instantly felt the way he had the last time he'd been down there: cramped, cold, and very much not safe. A shiver passed through him, but he ignored it and motioned for her to follow him as they left their departure point and started their walk. Much of the lower levels weren't accessible by speeder. Older, more cramped; a speeder couldn't fit here well.

"Yes, because they're the one who requested our assistance,"
he said as they walked. "But just remember, he could be lying."

They approached the complex without being accosted. It was quiet, and then it wasn't. The sound of blaster fire rang out and Caelan took one look at Everest before drawing his lightsaber, thumbing the switch and charging into the building. The hallway was away with people and screaming now. When Caelan burst in, they all stopped in their tracks and he scanned all of them for signs of a weapon.

"Nobody is to leave! This is an official Jedi investigation! Return to your units immediately!"

As people filed back to their units, whether afraid or just following orders, he stalked through until he could feel the disturbance. A room within which three people were, two alive, one dead. Nobody was holding a weapon, it lie on the floor between all three. The dead person? One of the tenants by the looks of her. The other two? Both also looked like tenants? Curious.

"Everest, I suggest we split them up and question them and then check their stories against one another. What do you think?"

The energy shifted almost immediately, taking Eve's breath with it. Caelan's signal to her caused an instinct to tap in as quickly as she was capable of, and she in turn reached for the training saber at her belt. A bright blue hissed out from the hilt on activation, and Eve held it in the way she had trained so much for. Caelan's voice rung out, powerful and drenched in authority, befitting a Prince— befitting a Jedi. In a glance, Eve was astounded by him, and it gave her a much needed strength in the ensuing moments.

"Everest, I suggest we split them up and question them and then check their stories against one another. What do you think?"

She nodded, automatically willing to follow his lead in this. The experience was an immensely new one to her, and she knew she would be better if she paid attention to his suggestions, for the sake of both of their safety.

Eyeing the body on the floor — heart breaking all the while — she guided one of the tenants to the far corner of the room, away from earshot. He was a stocky man in his 20s, human, dark hair already thinning from the stress of a life in the undercity, any once chiselled handsome look about him worn away to a notable greyness in his complexion and manner. His eyes were dark, as if they had seen far too much in such a short amount of time. He looked at Eve, compliant enough to sit, but sneered at her regardless.

"What's your name?" said Eve, her voice calm, but as firm as she was capable of.
"Kort." It was curt and abrupt response. He clearly had no time for her. It made her nervous.
"Alright, Kort. What happened?" Kort shrugged, his expression aloof and disinterested, barely meet Eve's gaze. "I want to help, Kort." To that, Kort snorted. "Okay. Do you know the person laying on the floor there?" Kort was silent for a moment.
"No." Eve was starting to think she wasn't asking the right questions, and she could feel a rising panic swelling in her.

There is no emotion, there is peace.

What would Master Noble do? Probably something amazing that she wasn't capable of. Her worry started to spiral.

Before she had the chance to ask any more questions, Kort had taken advantage of Eve's lapse in focus, and pushed her hard against the floor as he rapidly made his way to the door. Eve's back hit the cold concrete floor, sending a fierce, burning ache up her spine on contact, as her breath escaped her. If she was capable of cursing, she would have. Instead, she shouted the only thing she could think of.

"Caelan!"

UZAIFVP.png

"What's your name?" Caelan asked the woman that Everest didn't take to talk to.

The woman was staring at the body on the floor. Caelan understood all too well that death could be traumatic. Seeing it for the first time even more so. He walked closer to the woman and placed himself between her and the body to block her view.

"What's your name?" he asked again.

She looked up at him and swallowed. "Dira."

"Can you tell me what happened, Dira?"

"We, I mean, he... just..."

"Caelan!"

His attention snapped away from Dira and to the man now racing for the door. Caelan reacted quickly, enhancing his body with the Force and moving across the room to tackle him into the wall and to the ground. It was clear the man wanted to escape, but was it because he was guilty? Or was it because he was afraid? Both were plausible, and assuming one way or the other was not appropriate. It could skew their response to the situation. All he did for the moment was subdue the man.

"Stop!" Caelan said as the man squirmed. "I don't want to hurt you but you will hurt yourself if you struggle."

The man seemed to calm a bit at that, though only in the sense he stopped physically struggling. Caelan could see he was sweating profusely and his pupils were dilated. Something was off.

"Everest, check Dira. Are her pupils dilated as well?"

It took a fraction less than she wished for her to catch her breath and get her bearings, but she nevertheless leapt to her feet as soon as she could. While Caelan tackled Kort, her heart started beating faster from the adrenaline that suddenly took hold of her. Caelan was intense. She could see why he was a prince for his world, with the way he suddenly assumed an air of authority that rung through the room.

"Everest, check Dira. Are her pupils dilated as well?"

Dilated? Eve walked over to the shaking, shivering woman, offering her hands up to show she intended no harm. Yet she was firm when she placed her hands on her arms and looked at her. Dira tried to avoid her gaze, but Eve persisted, suddenly finding a strength in her to see this through.

"Yes," she said to Caelan. "They are." She turned to him. "What does that mean?"

"Nuffin', it's nuffin', Miss. Just sick is all."

Her eyes flitted back and forth between Dira and Caelan. The distraction seemed enough for Kort to try again to get out of there, and a knee pushed up towards Caelan's midriff as he wrestled from his grasp.

rhXV2kO.png

Caelan grunted as the knee collided with his stomach, but didn't release his grip of the man. In fact, he flooded his muscles with the Force, increasing his strength, shifted his weight, and rolled the man over onto his back with an arm wrapped around the man's neck and the other atop his head. Kort struggled trying to slap at his hands or kick his way free, but it was to no avail. It might look as if he was going to die, but he wasn't, Caelan just went until the man's breathing slowed down and he passed out, careful not to go too far.

"Don't like that I had to do that," he said with a sight as he released Kort from his grip and gently rolled him over onto his side. "Think it was necessary, though."

Composing himself, he stood and readjusted himself before looking at Everest and Dira.

"There's a couple of possibilities as to what the dilated pupils could mean. Down here it's usually drugs, but not always. Sometimes there are innocent factors at play."

Crouching down next to Kort, he rolled the mans sleeves up to look for marks, but found nothing. Then he checked his gums, but they seemed alright save for a bit of gingivitis and a need to floss more. His nose wasn't bloody, either. No obvious signs of drug use aside from the dilated pupils and the agitated behavior.

"Might want to check Dira, too, or maybe just ask her about drug use in the building. She's been affected by something, so if you have, use a little influence through the Force. Normally I wouldn't suggest it, but this is a rather extreme circumstance. Kort here has no obvious signs of drug use."

VaQVTQM.png

Eve wasn't sure what to think about it all. Sitting down beside Dira, she reached to her hands in her own. The woman avoided her gaze. She, too, had no sign of drug use, and yet her behaviour was becoming increasingly erratic.

"Dira, was it?" She nodded. "Do you know of any drug use in the building?"

Without saying a word, Dira shook her head.

"Could... Could you tell me what happened, Dira? Here, before we came?"

As she spoke, she allowed a gentle trickle of Light to enter Dira's mind. It wove itself around the fabric of her faculties, sending waves of gentle relaxation through her body, until it tugged ever so lightly in one clear direction on a thread that influenced the foundation of her thoughts and feelings. Something visibly shifted in Dira's face, as she became suddenly more at ease and open.

"I swear, I don't know, Miss," she said quietly, but meeting Eve's own gaze with a panicked honesty. "One moment we were all just hanging out. Maybe things got a bit heated, but—" Her eyes drifted back to the body. Eve shifted to block the view. "I— I don't think he did anything to do that..."

"Who? Kort over there?" Dira nodded.

"Next thing we know, he just... collapsed."

Dira's voice was tired, Eve could hear it. she watched her carefully. The woman was jittery, the dilation of her eyes not disappearing anytime soon. As Dira's hands rested in hers, Eve noted the clamminess of her wrists, and paid attention for the faint, unsteady rhythm of life beneath it. The pulse was weak, and getting weaker. The way her muscles twitched, the sluggish way her body responded— it wasn't just fatigue or hunger. Eve swallowed, feeling her own pulse quicken as the realisation settled in the pit of her stomach. Something was wrong here.

She turned to Caelan, but couldn't muster the strength to speak out loud in front of Dira, so she let her mind travel through the Force to him, an obvious apprehension lacing her thoughts.

~I... don't think they're sick. I don't think it's drugs. Caelan, what's happening here?~

Caelan Valoren Caelan Valoren

rhXV2kO.png

With Kort subdued, and Everest questioning Dira, Caelan moved over to the fallen. He touched their neck gently with two fingers directly on the appropriate artery but felt no pulse. They were certainly gone. Gently, he rolled them over, and check them for wounds, expecting to find a blaster mark somewhere on their person, but there wasn't one to be seen. Not a blemish. The only clue to anything was the dilated pupils, which the fallen also had, that stared lifelessly off to nowhere.

He frowned and looked up, staring at the weapon on the floor. A red herring. The weapon was not even related to the death that had taken place other than having been fired. No one had actually been shot.

/I DO actually think they're sick,/ Caelan sent back to Everest through the Force. /I think they've been poisoned. The dilated pupils are the giveaway, their demeanor as well. I bet if you checked her blood pressure you'd find it severely elevated./

He'd seen this sort of thing before. Not exactly like this, but similar. It was something that happened sometimes in high density housing, especially if the owner of the housing complex was behind or negligent in their maintenance practices. He had a hunch, but he didn't want to leave the two of them unattended, and he didn't want to leave Everest with them because she seemed less inclined to engage with them physically if the need arose, which meant she needed to do the checking.

/I need you to go outside and check the cooling units to make sure they aren't leaking anything. If they are, see if it's getting into the water supply. I think I know the cause of the owner's agitated tenants, so when you check that, find him and bring him here, if you would./

Eve's thoughts raced as she considered Caelan's suggestion. The implications were alarming. She swiftly, though cautiously, made her way towards a maintenance area that held the cooling units. The hum of machinery grew louder as she approached, and the air became noticeably cooler. Eve carefully examined the units for any signs of leakage or malfunction, which brought her attention to a series of pipes connected to the units, some of which showed signs of corrosion and moisture accumulation.

Tracing the path of the pipes, she could see how that they ran adjacent to the building's main water lines. In some areas, the insulation between the cooling pipes and the water supply appeared degraded. Her heart sank.

Hastily she sought out the building's landlord next as per Caelan's instruction. She found him in his office, poring over maintenance logs. He was a portly man, balding, with thick black sideburns clinging desperately to his face. Taking a deep breath to steady herself, she knocked on the doorframe to gain his attention.

"E-Excuse me, sir," she began, her voice calm but not without it's apprehension. "I've come on behalf... Um, I'm Everest Vale. I've come on behalf of the Jedi as per your request... There was an incident in one of the rooms. C-Could you come with me to discuss with me and my colleague?"

The man was silent for a moment, staring at her in a way that was impossible to read, until finally he spoke.
"Certainly."

As they made their way back, Eve sent more thoughts through to Caelan.

~The cooling system and water supply... may have gotten cross-contaminated... The pipes were... not good, and they run next to each other...~

Her face said the rest.

rhXV2kO.png

Caelan did his best to keep everything in the room at a calm level. With one person deceased, another unconscious, and the third in a state of delirium that left her largely unable to do much of anything other than hold herself and mumble words, it wasn't as difficult as it could have been. He still didn't like it. They were hurting and he didn't have the personal capability of helping them relieve that hurt.

"Fate," he said.

The droid popped up out of his hood and then hopped down onto the ground. It surveyed the room before beeping at him in acknowledgement.

"Depending on what Everest finds, I need you to call for medical personnel. If it is a coolant leak, I need you to inform them that everyone in the building has been poisoned and they'll need to send a large enough unit to handle that. If not, then we need a drug task force."

"Bwoo-beep! Dwoop-dweep bwee-bwoo beep-beep bwoo-dwoop bwee-dweet."

It was only a short moment later that she returned with a portly man in tow. Her words in his mind were acknowledged with a nod of his head.

"Coolant leak, Fate."

The droid put out the call while Caelan focused on the man.

"Sir, my name is Caelan Valoren. Like Everest, I'm a Jedi that was sent to assist with your issue. You reported having issues with your residents?"

"Yes, yes. They've been very unruly and disturbing the neighbors. I can't tell you how many complaints I've had!"
the man said, withdrawing a handkerchief from a pocket and wiping his face.

"How often do you perform maintenance on your cooling units?"

"What? Oh, those blasted things go out all the time. I have to call someone at least every other week, seems like."

"You don't self perform then?"

"No. I don't know anything about such things. Why?"

"You've got coolant leaking into your water supply. The whole building is being poisoned. I'll need you to get the name of the people you utilize for repairs so we can pass that along to the proper authorities. On the plus side, my droid has called for medical aid which should arrive shortly and we can alleviate the issue. Unfortunately, you've lost someone to the poison."
He indicated the deceased person. "You're probably going to end up in court over this."

Caelan looked at Everest. "Everest, could you please go with him to obtain his maintenance logs and the contact information for who does his maintenance?"
