A Doctor's Appointment

Jennifer was pretty sure she had never been on the planet of Belasco before. Of course there was a lot of places she had never seen and never would see. There were wonders she would never behold. And she had for one thought that Belasco would have been one of these places and especially her current location. This however seemed to not be the case.

At the moment Jennifer was seated within a sleek waiting room on the top floor of one many skytowers on Belasco. Waiting impatiently. However this was not just any waiting room, no, this was Doctor Robert Zendau's Private Practice! Not that Jennifer had ever heard about the man until a few weeks ago and matter of factly she wasn't here for psychiatric counseling, nor a Doctor check. Even though the fake appointment reservation for "Marie Kanteniajo" she had send in had stated so.

No. she had been tasked by the Red Ravens with the job of gathering more information about a potential new product, or drug rather. The plan was that they would develop it to expand their control over the drug markets across the galaxy. There was no better way of doing this than introducing a brand new drug to the already addicted masses.

So here she was... Waiting for her turn to talk with The Doctor. She knew terribly little about him.. A fact that would only make this job harder. She knew this. Hmmm... She adjusted her fashionably and rather expensive blazer a bit as she glanced over towards the door leading into the apartment, hearing raised voices from inside. She wasn't used to wearing this kind of upperclass like clothes, but she supposed it would make her fit better in here and also prove as a detail in the plan she... Sort of.. Had.

Sorta.

Doctor Robert Zendu was just finishing up with his last patient, a Selonian who was suffering from acute agoraphobia, and currently hiding under his Hover sofa. He had been so busy trying to extract the patient using a gentle, coaxing tone, he realized that the creature's allotted time had run over. Since the psychiatrist hated to keep his other patients waiting, he sighed and reached in with his thin hands, simply hauling the Selonian out by force. He ushered the man to the door of his office, and the creature all but flew into the waiting room and out the front door.

Brushing off his jacket and adjusting his tie, Doctor Zendu smiled at his next patient, a young scruffy-looking girl with a tail. He blinked and realized that he'd forgotten to bring her patient file, and so he held up his finger in a "one moment" gesture. Returning with her file, he looked down at the name and back up again with a tight-lipped smile.

"Marie Kanteniajo. Please come in."

As the man she assumed was the Doctor appeared in the doorway after having almost thrown the previous patient out, Jennifer slowly went to stand up in the most proper way she could manage. Maybe her hair was untidy or scruffy looking, she couldn't really do a lot about that though. The snow white hair was naturally untidy in some ways, however the new blazer of hers she had bought specially for this meeting and the rest of the clothes that accompanied it made her look somewhat.. Well. However you described fine people with manners and all that jazz. Of course she normally wouldn't look like this, but this was a part the cover she was trying to fit into.

But of course, scruffy-looking-degrees were relative from person to person.

She offered the man a weak strained smile as she was finally standing, moving towards to step across the floor and into the room, going to sit in the first hover couch she could find. Attempting to seem as important as possible, an act that for once wouldn't seem convicing. Jennifer wasn't really an actor, even she was aware of that.

"It's nice-.. A pleasure to meet you. Doctor."
She said, her eyes fixed on the windows overlooking the vast city below them.

The doctor gave his new patient a toothy grin and tilted his down to scan her patient file. As he flipped through the paperwork, he frowned, noticing that there was very little information about his patient in the notes. That was odd. His receptionist must have been slacking again. With a sigh, he placed the patient file on his desk and grabbed a spare chair and a little black book. Crossing his legs politely as he sat, Doctor Zendu took a pen from the front pocket of his tweed jacket, and cleared his throat.

"So, Marie. Perhaps you can tell me a little bit about what it is that's bothering you."

[member="Jen"]

That was one comfortable hover couch, she had to give him that. In fact it was quite a nice place. Maybe she should consider getting something similar, after all she couldn't stay in her suite within the Dragon Palace forever. Someday she would need something of her own. But that was food for thought in the future, now she would have to focus.

As The Doctor started to talk she snapped out of her little daydream, blinking a few times as her gaze flew towards him. It was hard to react when someone spoke out another persons name, or a fake persons name, while in reality referring to you. Hopefully Jennifer would not need to get used to that. She preferred to be herself above.. Well other people. She adjusted herself a bit in the couch and straightened her back. "Actually. Doctor Robert, I'm not here for a treatment." And with that said she reached in under her blazer, pulling out digital Holocard with a metal rim around its edges, on it a flickering headshot of Jennifer would be seen, some other information displayed, it all accompanied by a large round badge in the corner of it, spelling out D.U.T.I.

"I'm from The Department of Unorthodox Tactical Inventions. And have been send to give you an offer. We need some expertise from people like you." She said, attempting to seem trustworthy, a thing she perhaps had trouble with. But c'mon, the badge proved it all, didn't it?

[member="Doctor Zendu"]

The Doctor blinked and adjusted his horn-rimmed glasses so that he could better read the Holocard. With a smirk he handed it back to her. "I don't appreciate you impersonating a patient." the doctor said. "However, I can see why you employed that charade. After all..." here he chuckled. "I'm a hard man to get an appointment with."

Surprisingly he didn't ask her to leave but instead he grabbed a nearby chair and sat opposite where she lounged in the plus Hover sofa. "I have to admit, I'm unfamiliar with your organization, Jennifer, but you have me intrigued. What exactly is it that you need my expertise for?"

[member="Jen"]

How stupid could she actually be?

Jennifer didn't notice it at first when he used her real name, but with a brief glance she looked down towards the badge, finding his word usage strange. Of course the badge was displaying her full name.. Typical. She must have been drunk while writing it... She was supposed to have the fake I.D for Marie set up and now she had screwed up the badge.. Her name wouldn't link to this made up Police Force as it would with Maries. Or well Jennifer Phoenix would probably show up in the police archieves somewhere... Just under escaped underage convicts instead of scientist at D.U.T.I. Well she wasn't sure, she was probably presumed dead. Still, the entire background work had because of one little mistake been washed down the drain.

The chances that Doctor Zendu wouldn't go look up the organisation when she left were. Minimal. Perhaps a change in plans were needed, yes, maybe. A dry and rough cough escaped over her lips, a hand going to cover her mouth while the other signaled to him that she was alright, she had started to realize what people meant when they said smoking was bad for you. After a couple of seconds she adjusted herself in the couch, taking a second to inhale deeply through her nose, calming herself a bit before she started to talk once again:

"You see, Doctor Zendu. At Duti we have been tasked to invent a.. Form of training simulator for Military and other life threatning jobs." She nervously adjusted her blazer, her eyes going to look out the window as she continued to talk, her anxious self was easily seen. Instead of handing him a business card and getting the information she wanted over time, she would just have to ask him right then and there:

"We need some information on medical serums that could provoke a trance like state. As in.. Something that makes you dream, or activate your subconscious while you're asleep. You'll of course get paid, for your contributions if you're able to answer this. Does anything come to mind?"

Noticing Jen's smoker's cough, Doctor Zendu arose and pressed a few buttons on his desk. A rolling ashtray droid crossed the room and settled down next to the woman with a bloop. The doctor returned to his seat and smiled. The girl was curious to him, as even in her nice suit jacket, she had an element of criminality to her.

After he listened to her spiel, the doctor scratched his chin, considering her proposal. "Psychotropic drugs are a fascination of mine actually. While not the definitive expert, I know quite a bit about them. A drug like the one you describe is possible to develop. To manufacture it on a galactic-wide scale, you'd need clinical trials and that could take years and corporate financial backing. But if you wanted to manufacture it on a smaller scale, you'd merely need a skilled pharmaceutical specialist, such as myself." He put his thin hand on his chest and smiled.

He adjusted his glasses. "I'd need access to a lab, of course. Would D.U.T.I. be able to provide that?"

[member="Jen"]

Jennifer's eyes had followed the ashtray droid as it had entered the room. It seemed that he was indeed a doctor, or just one who had heard a lot of smokers cough before. But it would be unwise to smoke now, stupid perhaps. It would give off a lot of clues to her affiliation as The Dragon Cæmels was not really an ordinary brand one smoked, and especially not on this planet. "Ah, no thank you." She said, waving the Droid off before continuing:

"Well that's good to hear. We'll only need a prototype and the plans for how the serum was made. We'll be able to take care of the mass producing ourselves should it be needed. But yes, we can set up a lab for you, we would probably be able to set a highgrade one up on the world of Antecedant. How does that sound?"

They could, right? It would take a whole lot of paper work to get the company set up with a lab that wouldn't directly link to the Ravens. However it would be able to help them out a lot in the future should they decide to mass produce the drug.

The doctor was an excellent judge of body language and facial expressions and by hers, he could tell she was hiding some things from him. Not one to mince words, he stood up and pointed his pen at her, getting right to the heart of the matter. He encouraged his patients to be open and would do the same with evasive business partners.

"Jennifer. I would appreciate it if you leveled with me," he said testily. "Are you working for a criminal organization? It doesn't matter to me either way, I just think that if we're going to be working together soon, we should be fully honest with one another."

Although the doctor tried to remain ethical in his practice, Zendu didn't care too much who funded his research, as long as they had fat pockets. He nodded enthusiastically and gave her a toothy grin. "A lab on Antecedent sounds wonderful. When do we get started?"

[member="Jen"]

A nervous laugh escaped over her lips as Zendu started to talk, her hands going to adjust her blazer as her eyes wandered away from his. "A criminal organization? Haha, good one. What.. Erm.. Would make you say that?" Jennifer said, her voice hesitant. By the looks of it this Zendu was much more observant than she had expected. She had really messed up the plan, hadn't she?

She tried to gain her composure, straightening her back as she started to talk once more, her hand digging into a pocket under her blazer to retrieve a pack of cigarettes: "A criminal organization, harsh words, Doctor. Well, I guess being criminal have a whole lot to do with how you interpret laws, yes?" It was an answer of its own, giving off a lot without stating it without care. She needed his help, it was obvious. She could not afford to create distrust between the two.

[member="Doctor Zendu"]

The doctor grinned. A well-educated man who devoured the daily Holonews, he was familiar with the laws or lack thereof in the space around Antecedent, the planet of sin. When the alien woman had mentioned Antecedent the doctor had immediately suspected the Red Ravens were behind the project since there was little business done on that planet without their hand in the jar. With that in mind, Zendu shrugged at Jen.

"I'm sure the laws on Antecedent are quite lax for whatever it is that you need from me. In any case, I'm fine proceeding with a "no questions asked" attitude, but I needed to assess the risks first. If you want to keep the charade up, by all means, but what I'm trying to say is that you don't need it anymore."

He put his hands up in a welcoming gesture. "As they say in the casino business, I'm all in."

[member="Jen"]

"Ermm, yes." Jennifer muttered out in a confused manner, a hand going to scratch her stiff hair in ponder for just a second or two. So he was aware of.. Well, it seemed that he was aware of Antecedants state, at least to some extend. It seemed like he cut her short at every turn. Quite frankly she had not expected that a doctor that helped treat mentally ill people would so openly agree to parttake in criminal activity.

It wasn't entirely evil though, Jennifer reminded herself. The drug could be used for good as well.. Perhaps, who knew. Depended a whole lot on the outcome of their future work. She sighed as she nodded a few times, both at his remarks and herself, her legs streatching as she slowly went to stand up from the couch.

"Well then, how about we shake hands on it?" She asked, extending her right towards him for a handshake, her fingers longer than that of an ordinary person. "Oh, and also. Just call me Jen. Yea?"

[member="Doctor Zendu"]

"I'd be glad to shake on it, [member="Jen"]," said Doctor Zendu. Straightening out his tweed jacket, he crossed to her and stuck out his hand, giving it a firm shake. Adjusting his glasses the doctor gave her an enthusiastic grin.

"I haven't done pharmaceutical development since my time in med school, so I'm very excited about this venture. If anything, it gets me out of the office for a while, too. Between you and me, I'm a little cooped up in here sometimes." The doctor had the look of a person who stayed indoors all day, his skin pale and lacking the healthy glow of those who spent time outdoors.

"With the extensive research I've done on dreams and REM sleep, this project sounds simply fascinating." He walked her out to his waiting room. "I wait with bated breath to hear from you again, Jen." Doctor Zendu said, as he gave her a little wave. Then he scurried back into his office, quickly shutting the door behind him.

Jennifer kept the short and firm attitude as the doctor shaked her hand, slowly starting to move across the floor with him towards the door. She made sure to take a last look at the office just as he opened the door for her to exit. She adjusted her blazer a little as she turned to face him once she exited the room, and for the first time a slight and sincere smile was seen on her face.

"It's a pleasure doing business with you. I'll make sure to have all needed information send to you within a standard week."

And that had been her last words, she had simply turned on her feet and started to walk off. And as she had neared the end hallway she took off the blazer, swinging it over her shoulder. Of course she was still wearing the white dress shirt underneath, still. One could almost take it as a symbolic gesture. Either that or the fact she disliked the heat within the building.
