Balun Dashiell stood right-side facing his son, his right hand holding the hilt of his Crossguard Lightsaber, aiming the Sunfire Blade low toward the sparring mattress, pointed between them. The consistent thrum of energy vibrated loudly, though the emitter matrix had been altered to channel the blades' energy levels to training settings, a necessary precaution for the sake of the shared sparring session with the very young Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell , still a youngling yet old enough to begin learning how to handle the symbol of the Jedi Order.

Given that Kellan was so unfamiliar with the handling and practice of the Lightsaber, Balun had also modified his own Crossguard prior to the session, ensuring that the lateral blades would not fire when activated, freeing them both to train with a single blade in each of their hands. The only threat of damage is the flare of heat upon contact with the skin and a lasting bruise as evidence of contact.

Still, there was a process to be played out before Kellan would even be allowed to activate his weapon. Balun stood, showing his son a mere example of what it looked like to ignite the Lightsaber. The snap-hiss caused Kellan's eyes to widen in alarm, a response reminiscent of one who had not witnessed it before.

"Most everyone in the Galaxy has heard of a Lightsaber, what some might call weapons" Balun studied his Son as he spoke, paying acute interest to the boys reaction, both to the movement of the blade as Balun waved the weapon back and forth, giving off an audible whiiirrr as it moved through the air, power churning yet controlled by the hilts inner mechanics; "But it is more than a weapon to the Jedi. It is a symbol of our service to the Galaxy, our willingness to help others and our dedication to serve the will of the Force".

For a moment, Balun gave pause. His silence was replaced only by the slow, controlled movement of the lightsaber. His Son's eyes seemed fixated upon the light of the blade, common as so many young students found such excitement at the prospect of learning the sabre arts, but for Balun, watching his Son in this moment, he was acting as both the Master and the Father. A moment in which, in his voluntary silence, he reminded himself of the possibility of his personal feelings influencing the lesson.

It was a delicate line to walk. One he had just started to formally tend.

"Like all aspects of the Jedi Lifestyle, the Lightsaber requires the utmost respect and discipline, Kellan. Do you understand why this is?".

The hum of the yellow lightsaber was as mesmerising as it was intimidating.

Naturally, Kellan knew what it was.

All younglings knew what a lightsaber was, regardless of whether they could use the Force or not. Holoflicks and Databooks made for younglings were all over the holonet, made of fiction about Jedi racing into danger, brandishing swords of light, and rescuing people from space pirates or other crimson-bladed evil.

Seeing it for himself first hand, however, was a different story, let alone holding his father's other hilt in both hands at his front. Balun's standard Lightsaber hilt, which looked rather large beneath Kellan's smaller fingers, which gripped it tightly in front of him, remained inactive as he listened to Balun Dashiell Balun Dashiell and watched as his father moved the Sunfire (yellow) blade through the air back and forth, a display for Kellan's sake.

"Because it's dangerous?"

Kellan answered his father's question uncertainly. He knew that the Lightsaber was indeed dangerous simply by watching the blade and listening to the arc of its power, the thrum of its power through the air as it churned in response to every movement, but Kellan didn't know if his answer was the one his Dad expected.

Watching his father, Balun appeared so comfortable handling the lightsaber. It was as though his Dad held no fear of hurting himself, and yet when Kellan looked at the bright light of the blade itself, he imagined the power of such a thing being able to sever someone's arm or leg, to melt through incredibly strong metals.

"They do look like weapons, though, don't they?" Kellan pointed out the obvious, frowning a little to himself.

Balun Dashiell nodded, offering a gentle smile to his son as he disengaged the Lightsaber.

It was important that Kellan saw the Lightsaber active and felt the weight of Balun's original hilt for himself, realising the weapon's significance and seriousness as he held it in his young hands. Young being the keyword, the uncomfortable truth in that Balun was teaching his son about an instrument of the Jedi, capable of not only defending the lives of others, but taking them too.

"We're not going to use them just yet", he explained, gesturing with his left hand for Kellan to seat himself upon the sparring mattress just as Balun did himself, lowering himself to the floor and crossing his legs, placing the inactive weapon sideways in front of him.

He waited for Kellan to settle himself, watching as his son seemed to place the other hilt on the floor with a sense of relief. It was likely intimidating for the boy, with how Balun was cautiously approaching this, not to mention it was the first time he had held a lightsaber. Before now, he had seen Balun carrying the weapons upon either hip, but he hadn't been allowed to touch them for good reason.

This was a big step, and in some ways quite a leap of faith for Balun.

"We need to talk about why the Jedi carry these, and what is required of you every time that you use a Lightsaber--Whether training or simply carrying it with you", he explained clearly, taking his time to ensure that Kellan understood how serious his father was about the matter.

Balun had gradually taught Kellan about the Jedi over time, starting with stories he had picked up in the Jedi Archives, using history to ignite his son's imagination in the absence of a mother and any knowledge of nursery rhymes. Later, when Kellan was of age to take an interest in Balun's day-to-day life, it became easier in some ways, given the boy's intrigue.

Yet Kellan hadn't yet learned the darker reality of life in the Galaxy, nor the sacrifice that Jedi paid in service to the people and to the Force. Kellan didn't know that Jedi were at times forced to resort to violence when lives were threatened, and the aggressors refused to surrender themselves, to give up the fight.

"Tell me, and be honest because it's just the two of us and there's no wrong answers here; Why do you think the Jedi learn to use these?" He gestured to the Lightsabers on the floor between them, "If we are to think of them as weapons, as many people call them".

"People use weapons to fight and hurt other people".

The words came easily, simply spoken, and done so with juvenile conviction, as Kellan believed he spoke the absolute truth on the matter. He hadn't hesitated a moment before answering his Pa.

"But..." He faltered as he thought about the Jedi and what he knew of the Order so far, "But the Jedi are supposed to be the good guys. They keep people safe when there's danger and help make the Galaxy more kinder", he elaborated, voicing his thoughts freely and without fear of scrutiny, given that it was indeed Balun seated before him. Anyone else, Kellan would have appeared far more withdrawn and reserved, but he knew without a doubt that his Pa accepted and loved him--No matter how different he felt inside, compared to everyone else around the Temple.

"I guess maybe it's like in the holovids we watch sometimes. The ones with good guys and bad guys, right? The bad guys are trying to do bad stuff, and sometimes people get hurt. The Jedi come in with their lightsabers and try to scare them, make them give up because they know the Jedi can't be beaten?" Kellan's head tilted to the side, his juvenile prehensile tendrils swaying across his hair as he eyed his father for a hint of whether he was right or wrong.

A quiet chuckle escaped the boy's father as he listened to the example taken straight from one of Kellan Dashiell Kellan Dashiell 's favourite shows, a dramatisation of the Jedi as heroes, saviours of the Galaxy, going around solving mysteries and fighting crime like they were superheroes. All incredibly fictional and quite far from the truth of life, but he would discover this over time.

"A Jedi cannot be beaten, you reckon?" Balun cocked a brow at his son, a half smirk still present, though his expression was gradually softening with the nature of the topic; "Sorry to burst your bubble, kiddo, but we very much can be. The Jedi are not superheroes like on your show; we're very much the same as any other person, with the exception of our sensitivity to the Force and the training that we undertake as a lifelong dedication. It's not some space magic that makes us so capable. It's years of hard work, discipline, responsibility and respect for ourselves, our peers in the Order and the Force itself".

"It's not an easy life to choose for yourself, Kellan, and you are still very young. You have time to decide whether or not to proceed with your training or otherwise seek out another kind of lifestyle, something like what Uncle Makai does for example" Balun reminded his Son, feeling the need to reiterate the fact that, as Kellan had voiced his desire to become a Jedi, Balun had gladly pressed on ahead with it, but in his time as a Hopeful, and then an Initiate, there were still years before he would be unable to back out without some form of consequences....

"In any case, yes, we use our lightsabers as a means of deterrence, the hope being that should the bad guys see our lightsabers, they will realise they are either going to have to surrender themselves and stop endangering people...-Or try to fight the Jedi, which would of course be very ill-advised".
