A Bounty of Employees is Common

Kay-Larr

Kay nodded, turning her head to [member="Macoda Haberon"] and seeing the disbelief written on his face. "Yes, I did. These beings were taller than the Herglic, though much skinnier. Some had four arms, and the mist that they created made it difficult to see. The Herglic was wearing a helmet, but they somehow tore it off him and knocked him out. I got up there just in time and...well I opened fire at them. They were caught by surprise, so I had the advantage....It wasn't as though I went in there unarmed."

She wasn't much of a liar. There was no easier book to read than her face. She had lost track of the Herglic, [member="Ghorua the Shark"] . Her memories of their friendship were removed by the Sith Lord that held her captive. One of these days she hoped to get it all back.

Mac was impressed, [member="Lady Kay"] was brave if nothing else. He was tempted to reply with one of his own harrowing stories but by that point they had entered the city. Mac slowed down the frigate even more in preparation for a landing. The Queen's palace was easy enough to spot from the skyline, the magnificent complex dominated the city sky. Mac quickly found his way to the launch pad and slowly lowered the frigate down. He opened up the landing gear and the Free Lady came gently to a stop.

Mac unbuckled his harness and allowed the lady to go before him. The frigate ramp opened up with a hiss and Mac followed behind Lady Kay and her guard, stepping onto solid ground.

Kay smirked a little to herself. There was no reply. Maybe he didn't believe her. Or perhaps [member="Macoda Haberon"] was too focused on making a smooth landing. Regardless, she unbuckled herself and got to her feet, stretching out her muscles on her way to the ramp, almost as though she just had a nap, but really it was to keep her body from aching after all of that tension.

She stepped down the ramp and began making her way back to the Palace. "You'll find that you can never take anyone at face value here, but all in my staff are trustworthy. My secrets guard themselves and I'm sure that yours will do the same."

Mac suddenly turned to [member="Lady Kay"] and locked eyes with her.

"And do you trust me, Lady Kay?"

Mac was purposefully blunt with his question. He found that catching someone off guard with such a question would usually produce more honest results. Besides, he was curious of what Lady Kay thinks of him. He was always wondering about the impression he makes on others. Besides, such information would be useful to know.

Kay blinked at his sudden question and the fact that [member="Macoda Haberon"] was very quick to hold her gaze in his own. "I just let you take me on a flight in my ship with only one guard. So what does that tell you? If you had wanted to do me harm, them you would have done so already." Or so she figured. Most people were jumpy that way and had no patience.

She turned the question back on him. "And do you trust me?"

"I just let you take me on a flight in my ship with only one guard. So what does that tell you? If you had wanted to do me harm, them you would have done so already."

Well she clearly doesn't have me figured out.

Mac would've never escaped the planetary defenses. He figured that there were patrol ships around Commenor. Yes he could've overwhelmed the guard and Lady Kay, that much was clear, but he played the long game. The more trust Kay had in him, the easier it would be for him to collect the bounty on her. He would have to wait till they were truly alone in order to have the best chance of success. Mac was nothing if not strategic. Many often assumed, when looking at his size, that he was a simple minded brute. Yet Mac was very intelligent and cautious, and was used to taking advantage of this assumption.

"And do you trust me?"

The truth was simply no, Mac did not trust [member="Lady Kay"]. It wasn't necessarily her doing, Mac was slow to trust and suspicious of nearly everyone. Yes he was friendly towards her in a relatively sincere way. But did that mean that he trusted her? No. Maybe it was because she had mentioned the Zambranos once too many for his liking, or just his natural suspicion. Mac studied her. Staring deep into her eyes. He had always believed that you could tell a lot from a person's eyes, and Mac's eyes were unwavering. What he saw were stubborn, intelligent eyes.

Wait were those contacts?

Maybe it was just the light playing tricks on him. Whatever it was, it snapped Mac back to reality. He forced a smile and collected himself, his hands resting on his axes, "I believe there is more to you than meets the eye." And he left it at that. Was it the best answer? Maybe not, but it was the truth.

Kay furrowed her brows as [member="Macoda Haberon"] studied her while thry walked. Their eyes were locked and she wasn't on planning on being the first to break it. But then she saw something change. He spotted something and he put on a smile. She had to make light of what he said though. "I am a woman. It's my job to be more than what I seem, is it not?"

It wasn't long before they were back at the Palace, doors opening for them. "Shall I show you the mess hall? Or would you rather just part ways for now?" He could just want to relax in his chambers

Mac chuckled at [member="Lady Kay"]'s witty response. "No my lady that won't be necessary. I am sure I can find the mess hall well enough on my own. Please do not allow me to keep you from your undoubtedly busy schedule. Should you need me," Mac withdrew his comlink from his pocket and held it up, "You can reach me."

He bowed ever so slightly in her direction.

Kay smiled and bowed her head in return. "Thank you. It has been a lovely break from the every day, I assure you."

She broke off ahead of them then, her guard following in behund her as she made her way back to her own wing where her office was. She needed to send Mac's info to Darlyn. First scans of the man's record had brought up nothing to be concerned about. Yet a more thorough examination needed to be made. It was the same with every new staff member, common protocol.

New hires were always a gamble, but she felt confident about this one.

2 WEEKS LATER

Mac was startled awake, drenched in a cold sweat. With a yell he sat up and withdrew an ax, his heart and head pounding. But when Mac realized that he was alone in his chambers, his heart rate began to slow back down. He slid himself over and sat on the edge of the bed, both axes in hand. His grip was so hard that his knuckles whitened and the leather wrappings left imprints on the palms of his hands. Mac had had that damn nightmare again. It was the second night in a row in which he dreamt of the nightmare, something which was very unusual as he seldom did. Mac had gotten very little sleep over the past few nights. Whenever he tried to find solace in sleep, the burning trees would blind his eyes, his father's screams would deafen his ears, and the same horrible dread that overwhelmed him on Fornow would clutch his heart while he slept.

Seeing his name on the Bounty Board a couple nights ago had rekindled Mac's paranoia. During his nights off, he would venture down to the lower levels of the city. There, he saw his name on the board right below [member="Lady Kay"] with a reward for 50,000 credits, dead not alive. It confirmed his long standing suspicion that he was being hunted by the First Order and the Zambrano family, a suspicion that was responsible for many sleepless nights.

I've never stayed this long in one place before and now I have paid the price, my past has finally caught up with me.

It had been 4 years since Mac had escaped the invasion of Fornow, and not once did he ever stop moving. This time though, he had made a mistake. He had taken a high profile job, the personal pilot for the Queen of the whole karking planet. He had gone soft and let his guard down. Mac felt that he also revealed too much information to the Queen. He had gotten really relaxed around her over their first few flights together. He had talked about his travels, his adventures, where he has been, and the few friendships that he did have. It felt good to open up a little, but now Mac realized that he had made her a liability. Should the Zambrano's search bring them to Commenor, he did not want to risk Lady Kay's betrayal, especially if she was "interrogated" or held hostage for information. He would not under any circumstances risk being found by the Sith.

No loose ends.

Mac felt sick, his paranoia had him constantly on the edge. After contemplating in a long cold shower, Mac decided that he would finally collect the bounty on Lady Kay. In doing so, he would kill two birds with one stone. He would tie up a loose end and the bounty would be more than enough to allow him to keep moving. He could buy a freighter of his own and be lost in the wind. Mac donned his usual attire and holstered his axes. He sat on the balcony of his chambers and collected himself, his thumb tracing the engravings of his ax. He waited to be summoned. He knew what he had to do in order to survive. Mac would strike first and not give Lady Kay a chance to hand him over.

I have to act quickly while I still have her trust. They might've already found out my past and my bounty.

It would be rushed, Mac knew. But his hand was forced.

Kay had so far enjoyed the company of her new pilot. It wasn't uncomfortable being around him and that was a bonus if they were to go on a long trip. Fortunately she had stayed close to home. There was much that she was working on both for herself and Commenor as a whole. She had therapy sessions with her doctor, was still going through bacta treatments to heal her scars, and was getting help from her fiance and one of her friends. Friends were few and far between for her.

News had come across her desk about Folor station. It was ready. There would be no ceremony as the whole thing was a secret. The refurbished moon base was an ace up her sleeve. Yet still she needed to go there for an unofficial opening.

She got herself dressed in a more military styled gown, one that she had worn a few times before. It gave both the look and feel of both of her roles as leader and Queen. Kay then picked up her commlink and signalled [member="Macoda Haberon"] . She hoped that he was nearby.

~Mac? It's Kay. We're heading to Folor for a short trip. Can you get The Free Lady ready?~

No doubt she would have time to finish her tea before they were ready to go.

~Mac? It's Kay. We're heading to Folor for a short trip. Can you get The Free Lady ready?~

The comlink had startled Mac who had fallen asleep on the balcony. He awoke feeling a little better than he had when he woke up, the nap was too short for any nightmares. Mac withdrew the comlink from his pocket and replied.

~Right away [member="Lady Kay"]. The Free Lady will be ready for you shortly.~

He got up from his chair and tried his best to make himself presentable. He didn't want his image to reflect his mental state. The only thing different about Mac was that he had bags under his eyes from the lack of sleep, but there was no helping that now. After making sure he didn't look like a nervous wreck, he exited his chambers and made the short walk to the landing pad where the Free Lady was kept. He came to the launch pad and approached the YT-1300. It was usual for him to come and prep the ship before flights so the armored guards thought nothing of it. Mac tried his best to walk at a normal pace.

Mac opened the ramp of the freighter which unlocked and lowered with a hiss. He boarded the freighter and went into the small engine room towards the back of the craft. There, he closed the door behind him after making sure that no guards had followed him in. He turned to the various pressure systems and pipes that lined the wall. He carefully loosened a power coupling, not loose enough to cause any performance problems, just loose enough to warrant a warning on the control panel after the ship lifted off. Mac exited the engine room and proceeded to the cockpit where he rebooted the control system as standard procedure.

~Whenever you're ready my Lady. Your chariot awaits~

Mac forced himself to laugh. He sat down in the pilot chair and prepared himself for what he was about to do. This flight would entail leaving the planet entirely, giving him a good enough chance to escape. He needed to take this opportunity before he was found by the Sith. Just thinking about them caused his heart rate to quicken. Was it fear or anger? Probably both. Mac took out his ax and placed it on his lap, tracing the engraving with his thumb. Doing so calmed him, his axes were perhaps the only thing in this world he could trust fully. Mac closed his eyes.

He was ready.

And time for tea she had. Kay made sure of it. She always felt better after tea. It was one of her crutches, but one that she was allowed to have. Once finished she walked over to a mirror and inspected herself. Contacts were in, hair was down to hide the stubborn scars on the back of her neck, jacket was pressed. Perfect.

On her way out of her office, she brought up her commlink, signalling [member="Macoda Haberon"] once again. ~Mac it's Kay. I'm on my way.~ She pocketed it and made her way to The Free Lady, all the while her thoughts were on General Omar Santiago. The man was nearly impossible to impress or to show any emotion but sternness, yet he had taken the project of reopening Folor Base with an inward joy. But it wasn't so much of what was in the base, but more so the even more secrative project that he was working on on the other side of the lifeless moon. Santiago loved having strategic advantage. It was why she left him in charge in the first place.

The Free Lady was soon before her. As usual it was primed and ready to go. But she hesitated a little, raising a brow slightly as she suddenly grew nervous. Kay took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. It was only a short visit with Santiago, nothing more. He'll not be bothered to give her a tour, so she didn't have to worry. She was just there to thank everyone and boost morale. All just part of the job.

She stepped inside, two guards following her in so that she'd be flanked evenly at the base. They took their usual posts in the lounge while Kay headed up to the cockpit. She smiled to Mac as she spotted him in his chair. She took her own steat beside him, buckling herself in. "Afternoon. We shouldn't be too long and if you're lucky, maybe you'll get to hop into a fighter and give the Pig Trench a try." There was no way that she was going to let The Free Lady be flown into that course, especially after the Twin Canyon run. The ship didn't need anymore scratches on her hull.

Mac tried his best to sound as normal as possible. He looked up from his chair and saw Lady Kay in her pressed jacket and gown, he was pleasantly surprised at her attire. "You look beautiful my lady." Mac said with a sincere smile, it was true after all. "I have not had much experience in piloting smaller starships but one can always start learning, I'll be looking forward to it."

Yeah that will have to wait.

Mac had his ax laid across his lap to comfort him, his leg bounced up and down as he started the engine and lifted the Free Lady off the landing pad. As soon as he was clear of the surrounding buildings, he angled the freighter up and shot towards the sky, releasing some of his anxiety on the accelerator. He felt himself slide back in his seat as they powered through the atmosphere of Commenor. After escaping the planet's atmosphere he gave a quick glance towards [member="Lady Kay"] and smiled. He gained a boost of confidence as things went smoothly. His leg stopped bouncing.

As he leveled off the freighter, a flashing light appeared on the control panel, signalling an engine malfunction. Mac frowned at his planned sabotage. "Something is wrong with the engine, my lady. No need to be alarmed. It is probably just a power coupling that came loose, these models have the tendency to do that sometimes." Mac punched in the coordinates of their destination and flipped on the autopilot. He rose out of his seat and holstered the ax that was in his lap. "This is an easy fix, my lady. It shouldn't take too long." He turned to Lady Kay and laughed, "Just make sure to not touch anything."

Mac exited the cockpit with his hands resting on his axes.

Kay smiled a little at the compliment, though she wasn't looking for it. "Thank you. It was just a little something that I threw on." She chuckled in spite of herself, as she wasn't the type of person to be very vain.

Her eyes were drawn to the console as soon as it flickered lights, the alarm giving her a bit of cause for..well, alarm. But [member="Macoda Haberon"] seemed not to worry about it, so she allowed herself to be put at a bit of ease. Power couplings. They can be finicky at times, although The Free Lady was normally kept in top shape. "Maybe we'll have the engineers on Folor look into it and run a full diognostic while we're there. And don't worry, I won't touch anything."

Kay watched him go. His hands were on his axes again. Maybe he was a little more nervous about the alarms then he let on. She tried not to be, however and instead turned her attention to the viewport. At least The Free Lady wasn't shuddering.

Mac went around the bend of the hall and emerged into the lounge where there were two guards sitting silently.

Chit, two guards? I had only planned on one.

Nevertheless, Mac tried to keep his calm disposition and cleared his throat. "The freighter is on autopliot, there is something wrong with the engine. Can one of you two give me a hand? If the problem is what I think it is then I'd like some help."

The guard closest to Mac volunteered to help and stood up out of his seat. The guard was built and unwavering, Mac was expecting that. However even when the guard rose to his full height, Mac was a good head taller than he was. Mac smiled when he noticed the disparity between their sizes.

"Thank you sir, follow me if you will." Mac motioned for the guard to follow as they took the short descent into the engine room. Mac walked up to the door of the small room and allowed the guard to enter before him. "I really appreciate your help sir. If the pressure valve isn't shut all the way then it'll take two people to clo-

Mac locked the door behind him and shut the lights off. He suddenly lunged onto the back of the guard, wrapping a thick arm around his throat. The guard delivered an elbow to Mac's ribcage but he could not shake out of Mac's choke hold. The guard gasped, struggling for air. But Mac brought the guard to his knees. He was careful to not let the guard make any sounds that would alert the guard in the lounge or [member="Lady Kay"]. The human guard was no match after Mac caught him by surprise. He could feel the guard losing consciousness, his struggle became weaker and his legs stopped kicking.

"Shh shh shhhhhhh"

Mac wrapped his other arm around the guard's head and with a quick jerk, snapped his neck with a sickening crunch. He was careful to not let his body hit the floor, but gently laid the limp corpse of the guard on the floor of the engine room. Mac stood back up with a grunt. He felt for the light switch on the wall and flicked it back on. He then tightened the power coupling which he had loosened before take off. It was just an excuse to leave the cockpit and kill the guard but Lady Kay had brought two. Mac began to regulate his breathing and slowly exhaled. He had dealt with the first guard quickly enough, but he needed to act fast. The flight to the moon base was short enough as it is.

One down, one to go.

Mac unholstered his axes and unlocked the door.

Now for the messy part.

Kay was in her thoughts, going over her speech in her mind, which then rolled over to other thoughts of her upcoming wedding. Was it going to be big? Or small? Or would it be better if they eloped? So many things to consider for each.

The sound of the alarms shutting off and the flashing light ceasing broke her from her train of thought. She plucked out her commlink and signalled [member="Macoda Haberon"] ~Mac it worked. Everything seems back to normal now.~

Her eyes then turned to the viewport once more. The Free Lady passed the orbital defensive system with ease, both moons clearly visible. Yet it was the darker moon that they were heading to. In a way, Kay was looking forward to seeing what had been accomplished.

Mac ascended the few steps and rounded the corner of the hall which opened up into the lounge. The guard was no longer sitting, he had heard the commotion and was wondering what was going on. Unlike the first guard, this man elected to don his helmet. He was armed with a tall electrostaff that, while suitable for crowd control, was poor in tight spaces such as the lounge.

"Is everything going ok back there?"

Mac approached the second guard. He began to become suspicious when he saw how quickly Mac was approaching him. When the guard realized that both of Mac's axes were drawn, he pointed his electrostaff at the tall pirate. "Halt!" The guard jabbed with his staff but Mac parried away the spear with his left ax and stepped in, closing the quickly closing the distance. Mac swung ferociously with his right ax which knocked the helmet off the guard. Mac hurled himself into the guard, knocking the guard off of his feet and onto his back.

"La-"

Mac stepped over the man and slammed both of his axes down on to his chest, silencing him. Blood had splattered over Mac's face and had coated his axes. Mac stood up tall and cracked his shoulders with a grunt. He wiped off most of the blood from his axes on the corpse of the second guard and used his sleeve to wipe the blood from his face. Mac holstered his axes and withdrew his comlink from his pocket. He slowed down his breath before he answered.

~You're right, it did work.~

[member="Lady Kay"]

Kay looked over her shoulder as she heard abnormal noises coming from further in the ship. She raised a brow and the feeling of foreboding came once again, causing her to unbuckle herself and get to her feet. [member="Macoda Haberon"] 's voice came from the commlink soon after. That eased her a little, but still the bad feeling remained in her gut. Perhaps it was just nerves.

She headed out of the cockpit and headed towards the lounge. Kay needed some tea, even half of a cup to calm her down and make her feel better. "Hey Mac, I'm about to make some tea. Did you want--" Her words were cut off as she saw him and what appeared to be blood on his clothes.

All joy had left her in that moment.

"Please tell me that's engine oil...."

Mac stood there in the hallway, blocking [member="Lady Kay"] from seeing what had transpired in the lounge. Mac's broad shoulders nearly spanned the entirety of the narrow hallway and he towered over the Queen. He holstered his axes and looked down at her. "Go back to the cockpit, my lady. Don't worry, everything is fine." Mac looked down at his clothes which were stained with the blood of the second guard. Mac smiled and chuckled, "Yes my lady, it is just engine oil. It wasn't a power coupling like I had originally thought. That is why it took so long."

Mac gently placed a hand on Lady Kay's shoulder, urging her to turn around. "Come on let us go back to the cockpit. We should be almost there, you can have tea once we land." That first part troubled Mac. They were almost there. He needed to send this ship into hyperspace as soon as possible.
