SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Virtual Heads-Up Display: The A-6 displays a virtual HUD in front of the starfighter pilot in the form of a hologram wrapping around their field of view. The HUD displays live feedback from the A-6’s other two features, its targeting system and its AI assistant. In an emergency, the HUD can be disabled by holding down a button attached to the A-6 with a wire that can be fitted onto the pilot’s seat.
  • Live-Wire Combat Targeting System: The A-6 is equipped with a modern targeting system intended for starfighter-on-starfighter combat as well as striking weak points of buildings or capital ships. After a target is either manually locked on or automatically chosen by the AI, the A-6 uses the velocity and acceleration of the target to predict their movement and suggest a line of fire. The targeting system can also differentiate between slower projectiles such as proton torpedoes and faster projectiles such as laser bolts, providing two separate lines of fire for starfighters equipped with both. Furthermore, the A-6’s targeting system can be wired directly to a starfighter’s armament to provide a live update on how much ammunition is available.
  • A-6 AI: The A-6’s targeting system would not be possible without the use of an advanced AI. It performs dozens of calculations every second, the most important of which being tracking a target and calculating where the pilot should aim their weapons. Additionally, the AI is responsive to vocal cues and can answer questions from pilots relating to their starfighter. The AI can relay damage reports to the pilot along with suggestions about whether or not to evacuate, though it cannot overrule the pilot. In an emergency, the AI can be disabled to allow full-manual targeting by either saying “disable AI” twice or tapping rather than holding down the same button that disables the HUD.
STRENGTHS
  • Modern Warfare: The A-6 targeting system provides pilots with a modern interface combined with compact computing power that allows them to track down all but the fastest and most nimble of targets without subjecting the pilot to an overload of information.
  • Live Feedback: Thanks to its AI-guided systems, the A-6 can provide a pilot with instant updates on the velocity and acceleration of other starfighters as well as the condition of the pilot’s own vehicle.
WEAKNESSES
  • Solo Focus: The A-6 can only track one target at a time, significantly reducing its usefulness when engaging multiple enemies alone.
  • EMP Vulnerable: All of the electronic components that make up the A-6 are protected by at most a very thin layer of rubber, rendering them defenseless against military-grade EMP or ion weapons.
  • Visual Targeting: The A-6 relies on visual feed to find a target, making it unable to lock onto invisible or well-camouflaged vehicles.
DESCRIPTION

While plenty of starfighter combat systems already existed in the galactic market, the executives of Alge Imperial Shipyards Corporation concluded that it would cost less in the long-term to produce their own combat system for future starfighter designs. The result was the A-6 Starfighter Type Internal Targeting System, named after the successful sixth prototype. Centered around a rectangular 2m x 1m x 1m core module, the A-6 is part holoprojector and part AI combat assistant. From the tip of a holoprojector in the top center of the core module projects a long, rectangular heads-up display which wraps around the front of the pilot’s seat, allowing the pilot an immersive view of combat outside their starfighter. Beneath the holoprojector resides a network of computer chips and GPU processors powering an AI assistant that provides automatic aim assistance based on the velocity and acceleration of a target as well as the pilot’s own craft. Out of the core extend four evenly spaced copper wires, one of which ends in a button that can disable the A-6 in an emergency. The other three can be fitted with extension cords, converters, or plugged into other components of a starfighter to provide live feedback on those components.
