Essentially a miniature version of the Bastille system found on Helix starships, the Palisade operates in much the same way.
Unlike its big brother, however, the Palisade is intended for use in terrestrial engagements, and is usually found mounted on vehicles, stationary emplacements, and a very few droids.
The protection afforded by this system is profound, shunting away heavy bombardments, energy weaponry, and storms of projectiles. Unlike conventional deflector shielding, it does not distinguish between solid objects and blaster bolts, turning away nearly any form of weapon with equal contempt.
When struck, the Palisade produces a visible flash of purplish energy, though most of the time its energy barricade is invisible to the naked eye.
Vehicles mounted with the Palisade system can seem nearly invulnerable, advancing despite absorbing enough firepower to collapse most shields many times over. Brute force will seldom do to topple these walls. Precision is needed instead.
Conventional thermal shielding prevents the firing of physical weaponry by its user, such as missiles or ballistic weaponry. Like the Bastille, the Palisade attempts to get around this through the ingenious method of briefly lowering shielding around the area of the weapon's discharge. While it does do away with thermal shielding's greatest downside, it does introduce a significant vulnerability.
The area around the weapon discharge is momentarily entirely unprotected, allowing a quick or knowledgeable enemy the opportunity to inflict significant harm. This is compounded by the tendency of Helix weaponry to go up in radiotoxic explosions when badly damaged, potentially causing a chain reaction that can damage or destroy the attached vehicle.
