DESCRIPTION
Not a new metal per se but rather a case hardening manufacturing process that improves the quality and performance of Durasteel armor manufactured by the Maridun Mining Minerals and Manufacturing Corporation and offered for sale as a starship component to other manufacturers.
4M-Kroop Cemented Armor is technically an alloy of carbon enhanced Durasteel processed to be very hard on the face and softer but tougher on the interior making it harder to penetrate and sell subject to spalling from a non-penetrating kinetic hit. It is made in a multi-step process using cutting edge of technology.
KCA, as it is colloquially called for ease of reference, provides better protection and a slightly reduced weight/thickness than standard Carbon Enhanced Durasteel allowing ships fitted with KCA armor to be lighter and faster with the same protection or carry thicker armor with the same weight and better protection.
The production process introduces a standard Durasteel armor plate into an atmospheric furnace where the plate is heated to its melting point but the chamber is pressurized inhibiting the plate's liquification while still enabling the plate to gain enough viscosity for the particles to gain enough freedom to slide around each other as a liquid. At this point a stream of Tibanna gas laden with atomized particles of Carbon, Duramentium and Quadrillium is blown over the face of the plate rapidly heating the surface and allowing the partials to penetrate and change the crystal structure of the face of the steel, making it harder. The plate is then quickly quenched with a slurry of Lomite solidifying the plate and 'cementing' the enhanced structure into the outer 30 -40 percent of the plate's thickness.
This process only works on basic 9093-T7511 or 9095-T8511 class Durasteel and the plates may be manufactured in differing thicknesses, shapes and sizes. The face of the resulting armor sheets have a dull dusty grey appearance but can readily be painted or plated with a micro-coat of more expensive metal such as Beskar or Chromium but this is only cosmetic.
