"Hmm, actually I might have an idea. I'll be right back."

Valery raised an eyebrow and watched him rise. He walked over to where she had spotted personal items earlier and looked around for a moment until he found a sleeping bag. It seemed comfortable enough to her for just this night, but she wondered how he'd ever fit into something like that, and would it keep him warm enough?

Her question was quickly answered by him though, and the idea got her to sit up a little straighter, "Oh uh, yeah. That's a good idea," she said with a smile while he cut open the sleeping bag and turned it into a large blanket. Alex then sat down beside her and offered her one side, which she wrapped over her legs while she kept her side against his. This way, she'd be able to share her body heat while the blanket retained it all.

"I do hog blankets, so just a fair warning there..." she grinned but blinked again when he shared another fact about the K'paur. One that, in this particular situation, was actually quite useful, "I hope it's not too much to ask for, but we really should have someone be awake to guard. So if you can do that quite easily..." she smiled sheepishly and began to shift around so she could lay down and get some rest.

"If you do get tired and want some sleep, just wake me up, alright?"

With that out of the way, Valery closed her eyes and drifted away into the night.

When the sun finally made its way above the rooftops, and its rays of sunshine began to beam in Valery's face, she opened her eyes and grumbled like it was just any other morning. She shifted around, rolled, and looked over her shoulder, "Good morning..." she muttered, still not able to really see him in her sleepy state.

"You doing alright this morning?" she asked with a friendly smirk.

Alex mumbled something intelligible, obviously feeling the disturbance of Valery moving. The K’paur for all intents and purposes appeared asleep. But the moment a bit of sunshine hit his face, his eyes flew open.

Had he underestimated how much energy he had? Alex vividly remembered being awake most of the night, so perhaps he had dozed off towards the end?

Ultimately though they were safe, no undead had managed to come barging onto the rooftop. And Alex didn’t feel a single hint of cold in his bones.

Very alright, thanks to someone being practically a furnace last night.” He said, letting out a deep chuckle. There was honesty in his voice, he was grateful for what she had done last night. Being subjected to cold weather like that was a nightmare for K’paur. “That ability of yours, to retain your body temperature? Very handy.

Alex had pondered if it was something he could learn, it would be invaluable if he ever found himself in such a situation again. But that was for another time.

Hmm, it looks like we shifted positions in the night too.

Whereas they had been huddled close together last night, now when Alex attempted to move, he found he couldn’t budge his left arm. Somewhere his cybernetic was trapped beneath, while his right was draped across Valery.

And it looks like someone did indeed hog most of the blanket.

"It's a very useful ability, and one you especially might want to learn sometime..." Valery muttered, still a bit sleepy so she wasn't really aware of everything around her yet. She had been able to get a decent amount of sleep in, but given the circumstances of the day and night before, she was not able to find much rest. At least they had been warm, and-

"I... thought K'paur didn't sleep, so it looks like it," Valery shook her head and chuckled, before she shifted around until he was set free, and she could sit up. Her hair was a bit messy, as it always was after sleeping, so she did her best to fix it up and began to rise to her feet.

The zombies had given up trying to reach them, so for the first time since their arrival, it was nice and quiet. Almost peaceful, even. "The blankets were also mine, to begin with, so no complaining," Valery said with a grin shot his way. She then walked around for a moment and looked in the direction of the facility.

Her senses focused and... "They're there," Valery said with a sigh, "Survivors — I can sense their desperation. If you want a fast way down, I can use the Force to lower you. But you'd have to trust me and not move around too much. Your call though... I'm sure there's an emergency ladder around here somewhere too~"

Once he was free, Alex stood up and gave his limbs a bit of stretch. “I suppose I underestimated how much yesterday took out of me.” He chuckled, it certainly wasn’t your typical first mission back after recuperating from an injury. “Went from zero to a hundred real quick.

After that, the K’paur walked over to the rooftop’s outer wall, tall enough to just stand and look over it. The colony looked almost peaceful, one would never think it was infested with zombies. Although he was sure if he looked down, he’d see the shambling down the streets in numbers.

Speaking of, Alex turned around and looked towards the rooftop door. It had long since been left undisturbed, and his makeshift lock had held it from last night’s undead onslaught.

He glanced over when Valery began speaking, then turned back to see she was looking towards the colony’s main facility. It appeared her senses had returned, or perhaps sharpened with the lack of undead around at the moment.

I have a feeling once we’re on the ground, we’re gonna need to be quick about it.” Alex didn’t know what or why, but something in his gut told him time was going to be running out soon.

The K’paur chuckled at Valery’s suggestion. “I mean while the ladder is tempting…” He looked at her with a smile. “I trust you to get me down safely.” Alex turned around to walk past her, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. “Just watch out for those hydro spanners on the way over.” He teased, earning him whack from the Jedi Master as he passed her.

Ow.” Alex faux-complaining, flashing Valery a cheeky grin.

He returned to where they had been seated, picking up his rifle and blaster. Alex gave both weapons a quick check before he holstered and clipped them to his belt.

Alright, I’m ready when you are Val.

"It did... and it was only the beginning," Valery looked at the barricaded door, then out into the city. It was swarming with undead, and they were soon going to make their way through it all again. She really hoped they could avoid being followed by a horde again. If the zombies were more spread out, it would be far easier to take them out or avoid them altogether. Only in large groups or small spaces, they were particularly dangerous to her.

Still, though, she agreed with his comment about being quick about it.

"Mhmm. We'll be able to go down quietly, but the second we run into trouble, I think others will be alerted as well." Valery paused, as that raised an important question in her mind. "If we get a big horde on us again, we should try to lose them somewhere. We can't risk bringing an army of those things to the facility."

A soldier and Jedi could defend themselves quite well, but those people certainly could not.

With that out of the way, Valery offered her suggestion, and while he accepted it, Alex also thought it smart to tease her about the incident with the hydro spanner. It, of course, got him whacked but she still flashed a smirk in response, "Be careful it's not going to be me who will end you here today, soldier boy," Valery threatened jokingly before she walked over to the edge, performed the last scan of their surroundings... and then she jumped.

Without saying a word, she just jumped off the edge, spun around in the air to face him again, and reached out with her hand. The Force wrapped itself around his body to gently pull him along in a controlled manner, and when they reached the ground, she cushioned her own fall with The Force, making it seem like the impact was nothing. He was carefully set down right beside her, and she looked at him with a bit of a smug look.

"Let's not keep those people waiting, hm?"

They definitely couldn’t afford to draw any attention from here on out. Just arriving at the colony had seemingly alerted the entire undead population to chase them down. Which yes, while that was an expected outcome given the noise, it was more so proof that the zombies almost functioned on a hivemind.

If one group got alerted to something, it was more than likely that another would be alerted by them, and then that would domino its way into forming another big horde.

Alex walked up to the rooftops edge, as instructed and watched as Valery just jumped off like it was nothing. He tensed up, not sure how exactly this was going to work. Wasn’t like he regularly worked directly with a Jedi before today. And just as he was about to speculate, he felt something akin to an invisible hand gently pull him off the roof and down towards the still descending Valery.

It was a weird sensation to be falling, and having no direct control of it. But again, he trusted Valery so he just went along with the ride. When his boots finally touched the ground, his hands were immediately on his rifle just in case. He turned to look at Valery, catching that slight smug look.

Okay yeah, that was very impressive.

And not a moment later they set off towards the facility. Their trek towards it was mostly uneventful, in part now that Valery’s Force senses had sharpened. It was invaluable in avoiding the larger packs that were shambling around. A few strays had to be taken out, but that had been no issue.

Eventually, the duo arrived at the facility’s main doors. Two large bulkhead doors, ones that looked a lot more durable than the ones Valery had blasted open yesterday. A quick test of the wall console made it clear they were sealed shut.

Watch my back, I should be able to get this open in a bit.” Alex was no technician, but every marine tended to pick up on small things from their fellow soldiers. Fortunately in this instance, he knew how to mess with some wires.

The K’paur placed his cybernetic hand just beneath the control console. He carefully ran it down the panels below, until he found the right one and gently punched it. The indent popped out a corner, allowing him to pull it off and gain access.

A little spark here and there, a crossing of some wires and the bulkhead doors began to loudly whine as they opened. That…probably wasn’t good. Alex’s head snapped towards Valery, a look on his face that was likely matching hers.

Inside. Now.

He immediately stood up and dashed along and inside as the doors were opening. Fortunately for them the power was still on within, so as soon as Valery was inside he hit the console and the command for the doors to shut behind them.

"Okay yeah, that was very impressive."

"I know~" she joked with a waggle of her eyebrows. It was the last bit of playfulness she could afford because they were about to head into the city with all of its dangers, hoping to reach the facility that contained the survivors. A safe path there was going to rely on her senses and their quick thinking, but even if they got the survivors out, getting back to the ship and taking off without being overrun was likely going to be a challenge.

But they had no choice, so they began to move out together.

Along the way, Valery was awfully quiet, not because she didn't want to talk but because she tried to force an incredible focus into her senses. They helped her feel pockets of the undead as they moved, and alerted her to more immediate danger as well. Alex had learned to trust her and followed her through the city even if she seemed to take very peculiar routes. Similarly, she trusted him more than enough to handle lone zombies she couldn't focus on while she acted as a guide.

Eventually, through their combined efforts, they reached the facility and stood in front of blast doors even bigger than the ones before. The trick she had used to break the others would, without a doubt, work on these as well but she couldn't do it. By breaking open the doors, the undead could get inside and they'd have no way to lock them out. It would mean the deaths of everybody, themselves likely included.

Luckily, Alex seemed to have an idea and she was quite grateful for it — Valery was terrible with technology, after all.

"I've got your back, just be quick..." she muttered while she turned around and waited. She could feel no zombie approaching, and all seemed well... until the doors began to slide open. The sound echoed through the ghost colony, and Valery felt something stir within the Force. It froze her up for a moment and made her whole body seem tense.

"They're coming."

Valery sprinted back and as Alex looked through the closing door, he'd see a massive horde rushing towards them. They were fast, and the doors were closing very slowly, but it seemed they were going to be alright. But all of that hope faded when the doors suddenly stopped, and an electronic panel blew up. With widened eyes, Valery turned to Alex and only one word left her lips.

"Run!"

As the old saying goes; when it rains, it pours.

The K’paur was already mildly panicking when the doors began to whine as they opened. He had just got to the console to shut them, when the undead roared out across the colony. Alex looked over to see Valery had tensed up, no doubt sensing the mass of reanimated dead heading their way.

He looked out through the bulkhead doors to see the charging horde. “We should be fine, they’re far enough way that the doors should-

But Alex’s words evaporated when the doors suddenly grinded to a halt.

No no no, come on!” He ran over to the console, frantically trying to get them to finish closing. But any attempt to do so just ended up exploding a nearby electronic panel. It was useless, the doors were stuck open.

The K’paur turned to look at Valery the same time she did. He didn’t need to hear the word before he was already running. The area they were in was large and open, likely a loading area for supplies to be taken deeper into the facility. At the far end was another set of doors, that was their destination.

But as they ran, an idea began to form in his mind. Alex suddenly turned around as the zombies were about to spill in through the bulkhead gap. He began to fire at the first ones that came through, not aiming for their heads but rather their legs. They collapsed to the ground, blocking the limited space the undead had to get through. Now they were stumbling over one another to get through. It wasn’t going to impede them completely, but it would provide some more time.

Alex dashed over to the door where Valery was waiting, the moment they were through he slammed the door controls and they slammed shut.

I don’t know how much that’ll halt them, but-” He was interrupted seconds later by a couple zombies slamming into the doors, immediately denting them.

Yeah, those weren’t going to hold them for long.

The K’paur turned to look at Valery, mouth opening to speak only for the sound of a door sliding open to fill the corridor.

[Hurry, this way!]

An Ithorian appeared through the doorway at the far end, the first of any living beings either of them had seen since they had arrived.

While they ran as fast as they possibly could towards the doors that could hopefully keep back the undead for a while, Valery noticed Alex suddenly stopping and pulling out his weapon again. She wanted to stop as well to stand and fight with him, but the second he blasted some of the zombie's kneecaps, Valery understood what he was doing and kept moving forward on her own. She soon reached the control panel of the doors and opened them, before turning back around to watch Alex sprint over to her.

They passed through the doors together, closed them and had a moment of relief. A brief one, though, as second later a couple of zombies ran into the metal doors and managed to dent them already. Both Alex and Valery understood that it wasn't going to take long before they would break through, but another door sliding open stopped them from discussing their next plan, and in its opening, they finally saw the first survivor.

"Thanks...there are a lot of them out there," Valery told the Ithorian after they moved deeper inside the facility. "But we are here to help you and the others escape. We have a ship not too far away from here," she said, which sparked some visible hope in his eyes. "Where are the others and how many of you are hiding here?"

[About 20 total, and we have one human male who is badly injured. Not infected though.]

Valery sighed and looked at Alex, "That will definitely slow our escape down. Either you will have to help him along or I could with the Force "

"What do you think?"

We could see if any of the survivors are capable enough to carry the injured, leaving us both free incase anything happens.” Alex spoke, although his tone made it clear his mind was a bit elsewhere. The trio stopped inside another open room, one that looked to have been used to process and examine the local flora and fauna.

Alex didn’t answer Valery, instead he was staring at the floor deep in thought.

It’s going to be too risky trying to get twenty people to Valery’s ship, no way at least one of them doesn’t panic.

Finally though, the K’paur looked up at her. “Do you think we can wait for them to become disinterested? We already know the zombies will lose interest if they can neither see nor hear.

But before Valery could respond, the Ithorian spoke up. [Well…]

Alex’s eyes snapped over towards him. He did not like the sound of where this was going.

[Within twenty-four hours of that freighter landing, all power was cut across the colony. The facility has since been running off a backup generator. But its fuel is limited, and only lasts for shy of a month.]

The K’paur let out a frustrated sigh, “And let me guess, today’s that day? How long do we have left?

[A few hours.]

Not enough for the undead to clear out, not even close.

Alex let out an audible curse, immediately beginning to pace with his arms crossed. He had clearly fallen back into ‘marine mode’ as he tried to think of a solution. “Do you have any other entrances or exits into the facility?

[Other than the main entrance? A couple landing pads on the western side.]

And they’re not accessible any other way?

[No, they’re on elevated platforms, so the only way to reach them is through the facility.]

He was quiet again for almost a minute, until he suddenly paused on the spot. Alex let out a small sigh, turning to Valery with a look that practically screamed ‘you’re not gonna like what I’m about to suggest’

Val, your ship is capable of auto-pilot right? So you can ping it to your location? Escort the survivors to the landing pads and get them onboard.” Though the biggest issue there was the fact the zombies were going to be even more frenzied by the ship.

...I’ll stay behind and hold them off. Once you’ve got them to safety you can come and get me.

One problem after another seemed to force its way between them and getting these people out of here alive. From a massive horde of zombies just outside the doors, to an injured man who would almost have to be carried out of the facility. But when she finally believed things couldn't get worse, she heard the Ithorian speak in a way that suggested a far more serious problem still awaited them. Alex was quick to inquire and what folllwed sent a shiver down Valery's spine. If all of those zombies were going to be in their way, there would simply be no way that they'd get any of these survivors out alive.

"So, what do we do now?" Valery asked after a moment of silence fell and when she turned to look at Alex, she could see a plan forming in his mind. Just by the way he then looked at her in return, she understood that it was one she wouldn't like at all.

"You want me to leave you alone?" She asked with a frown, knowing that if the zombies were to overrun this place, he more than likely needed her help to survive. There were just way too many of them. But after another moment of thinking about it, she also understood that they didn't really have much of a choice. So with a sigh that showed her reluctance, she finally nodded to show her agreement to his plan.

"Alright, but you better be ready when I come back around to pick you up. No more casualties today," Valery said with a very serious look in her eyes. She then turned to the survivors and gestured in the direction of the landing pad. "Gather outside! I'm calling in our evac shuttle now!" She called out while she worked on sending the command to her ship to summon it.

Finally, she turned back to Alex and dipped her head, "I'll see you soon. Stay safe."

"You want me to leave you alone?"

No, Alex didn’t particularly want to be left alone. But their options were limited, and time was not on their side. He could hear the zombies smashing their way through another door, their presence growing ever louder the closer they got.

The K’paur glanced over to Valery, who didn’t look none too pleased about the circumstances. Even with her acceptance she showed reluctance in wanting to go through with it.

No casualties.” He replied, although the words seemed to weigh heavier on his mind. Alex looked over at the survivors, and he couldn’t help but think back to a similar sight from a time that felt so long ago now.

This was roughly how many were left in the unit…before that last ditch effort.

But before anything else could happen one of the survivors, a young Nautolan ran up to him. “Here take this,” she said, holding out a vibrosword. “It was brought along with some of the colony security, and given the last of it can’t currently use it.” She paused to nudge her head towards the injured human. “It’s best in your hands.

Appreciated, now go and get on that ship.” The K’paur examined the sword, it was decent and nothing particularly special. But he had intended on using his knife originally, which wasn’t really going to cut it. No pun intended.

You too,” he replied to Valery returning her nod with one of his own. And then silence fell, well aside from the zombies slamming into the last door that separated them. But Valery and the survivors were out of there, now it was down to him to keep them at bay.

Alex fell into a crouched position, drawing his rifle into his hands. The undead were coming down a corridor, giving him a perfect avenue to create a bottleneck. Within a second of the door slamming to the ground, Alex began firing. He immediately aimed to cripple the zombies, force them to collapse in the doorway and block it up.

The K’paur fired in short bursts, giving it a second between each to keep his rifle from overheating. It was going to eventually, but he’d squeeze out as much as he could before it did. The undead kept coming through, although in a more controlled manner. But the inevitable happened shortly after, and Alex’s rifle overheated.

He let out a sigh, throwing the rifle aside and grabbing the vibrosword.

Protect. Do not fail them Alex, do not fail them like you did with your brothers in arms on Selvaris.

Alex let out one last breath, before he charged forward with a roar.

"Come on, keep moving! Get inside quickly!" Valery called out a while she attempted to coordinate the other survivors for their escape. Her ship was already roaring ovehead and drawing every single zombie in the colony to their location, so every second counted, especially with Alex having to hold back the horde on his own. If only he had been able to pilot the ship - she would have been out there, then, using all of her strength in the Force to stop them.

But now, their survival relied on him and despite his training and skills as a marine, she had no idea how long he'd be able to last down there. This group was even bigger than the one they dealt with on their arrival day, and they already had to fight their way here as well. So at all cost, she had to reach him as as soon as possible.

"Find a place to sit, strap in and don't move!" Valery then instructed while they helped the injured human on board and got him seated. But while they did and after Valery had made all necessary preparations in the cockpit, all of her focus was on her senses, as they reached out to feel if Alex was still alive. She could feel him struggle and fight and she could still feel the intense emotions that such a battle alone would provoke, so she knew he was still alive.

When everybody was finally inside, she blasted off to the pick-up point and lowered the shuttle so Alex could climb inside with her help. But at that height, she could not get too close, so there was quite a sprint ahead of him if he managed to fight himself out of his situation. "Alex, it's time to go!" She yelled over the sound of the engines while she stood on the ramp she had lowered. She was ready to help him but first, he had to help himself.

The vibrosword continued to buzz and thrum as it carved through zombie after zombie. Alex moved like a machine, taking off heads, limbs or just outright cutting them in half. He didn’t have the lightsaber or the fancy acrobatics of Valery, all he had was a will of steel.

However, it was a losing gambit no matter which way you looked at it.

For every two zombies he cut down, another three replaced them. Bit by bit, Alex was being pushed further back into the room. Even in this raged state, the K’paur had the sense to not allow any of the undead to get around him. A trained soldier he might be, he was still susceptible to blind spots.

Thankfully these were just mindless zombies, and not enemies capable of using ranged weaponry. All these had were their claws and teeth, the latter of which was useless if they couldn’t get close enough to bite.

Alex was however scratched to hell, his jacket since torn apart and discarded somewhere amongst the horde. His shirt was in tatters, barely hanging on with every scratch that cut across his chest. But every bit of pain merely fueled the K’paur into fighting back harder.

The sounds of a ship lifting off echoed from nearby, seemingly irritating the zombies further. But more importantly it was the signal for Alex. His rage-fueled mind didn’t budge initially, wanting to continue the fight. Fortunately however, rationality took the reins and Alex made a run for the pick-up point.

Alex ran down one last hallway, forcing the zombies into a bottleneck as they all tried to pursue him. A few got through first, but they were easily dispatched with a swift slash of his sword. Once outside, the K’paur didn’t hesitate as he made a sprint towards the ship, waiting until the last moment to leap and reach towards the ramp.

His cybernetic arm slammed down onto the ramp, metal fingers hooking into the foot of it. Alex swung his right arm up for Valery to grab and help pull him up. Once he was, they quickly moved inside and let the ramp close.

A tense feeling lingered in the air, as the K’paur stared at Valery. Fury and rage still burned in his gaze, but the rest were mere embers. It almost seemed like he was about to do something, until Alex snapped out of it and he slumped against the ship wall.

Ugh, remind me to never do that again.

Even though she was the only one standing on the ramp, everybody on board was holding their breaths for Alex, as he made his final sprint to get to safety. The zombies were in close pursuit but the marine, albeit beaten to hell and torn up, was still much faster than the undead. He soon reached the ship and with a powerful jump up, he was able to get his cybernetic arm on top of the ramp first to gain hold of it.

"Come on!" Valery called out, as she immediately rushed to his aid and grabbed his other arm to pull him inside. Without wasting a second, she nudged him into the primary section of the ship and closed the ramp and blast doors behind her. It resulted in an immediate silence, as the undead were not able to reach so high, and every bit of danger she had felt in the Force faded away completely.

They made it.

Alex, however, had been roughened up quite a bit and used the wall to lower himself down to the floor. People were likely anxious about a quick departure, but Valery would make them wait a little longer, as she crouched down to check on him. She had felt his rage, but also the pain suppressed by the adrenaline in his body. "Heyy, are you okay?" she asked with a worried tone. His jacket was gone and very little remained of the shirt the zombies had torn apart, but they had clawed away at his skin as well.

"I'm going to take us out of here, but you should get those wounds cleaned up. They can still get infected, although not in the worst way imaginable." Luckily, he hadn't been bitten, that much she could see.

As his senses steadily returned to him, Alex hissed in pain as he felt as though his entire torso was on fire. He could hear a voice; a familiar one at that calling out to him. The K’paur looked up to see Valery was looking down at him.

He chuckled, giving her a small thumbs up. “Well, I feel like I just had a scrap with a whole bunch of loth cats, and barely got out.” Alex chuckled, but it quickly shifted into a wince as he felt a number of the scratches sting.

Slowly but surely, he managed to pick himself up onto his feet. Although he did wobble a little, the adrenaline was well and truly gone.

A little deja vu, aye?” He chuckled with a grin, remembering the moment back in the apartment. “Yeah, you go and get us out of here. I’m gonna see if any of the survivors can help me with these.” Alex winced again as he stumbled deeper into the ship, specifically to where the colony survivors were located.

He raised a hand the moment they suddenly burst into conversation. “Anyone here have experience as a medic, doctor, or something like that?” Alex looked around as the survivors mumbled to themselves. “Don’t matter, I just need someone to help.

I can help!” The young Nautolan from earlier was the one to chime in. Alex just nodded, motioning for her to follow as they disappeared towards the medical bay.

The K’paur hoped this would be the last time he’d see zombies for a long while.

"Not a great deja vu, but yeah..." she said with a slight frown as she looked him up and down. The undead had really roughened him up and spared no part of his body. Adrenaline had kept him going in the heat of the fight, but she knew that he'd likely not be able to keep going much longer without medical treatment. Luckily, he wasn't being stubborn about it and suggested that she'd get them out while the colonists handled his treatment.

"Alright, let me know if you need anything,"

With that, Valery returned to the cockpit alone and plotted a course to Coruscant. They'd be able to take a better look at Alex there to make sure none of his scratches were infected, and she'd be able to report back to the Alliance and Jedi. The colony was lost and the only way to cleanse it without risking the plague escaping was by blowing it apart from above.

After plotting the path, the ship soon jumped to Hyperspace and Valery decided to leave the rest to the auto-pilot for now. She wanted to check on the survivors, as well as Alex, who was currently being helped in the small medical bay her ship had.

"How are you holding up?" Valery asked as she entered with a worried smile. "How serious are the injuries?" she then asked the survivor, knowing the woman would give a more realistic view than Alex himself probably would.

The K’paur was sat atop one of the medical cots, while the Nautolan; Ryne, was stood behind him. Alex had discarded the tattered remains of his shirt, revealing the full extent of how much he had been scratched. But it was fortunately the furthest they got, as there were no visible bites to be seen.
