Ra’Katha - Saltuhn
The Kemotar’s Palace

The shuttle shuddered as it touched down on the dusty landing pad, jostling its elderly passenger from his nap. Landings were always the worst, but at least they were a convenient means of waking up. Once the shuddering had subsided, Caulder groped around for his cane and, on finding it, hobbled out of his seat and into the aisle.
An obsidian-black protocol droid was waiting for him there. It stood in the exact middle, facing Caulder, seemingly staring him down. Silent.
The Umbaran sneered, “Don’t give me that look. What, have something better to do?”
It offered no immediate response, except to step silently to the side when Caulder came to pass. His droid turned on its heel and followed him out, remaining close behind the Deputy Director even as he descended down the loading ramp. The rear edifice of the Kemotar's Palace stretched out before them.
An impressive sight, even if from this probably less frequented angle. If there were ever a place for the Viceroy in power to roost, then yes, Caulder would expect this to be it.

The sun shone ever-brightly over Saltuhn as the city sweated in the heat of midday. It was usual Ra'Kathan custom to conduct business away from the hours when the golden planet's sunburned hottest, but Bastille had grown accustomed to the fact that most offworlders would rather follow their traditional noonday appointments than meet in relatively better comfort.

Still, it did not bother Bastille. There were more important things to worry about than a workday schedule.

He was in the middle of reviewing manifests from the recent influx of organic product when he was interrupted by a servant. "Mva'Kemotar," the servant began apologetically. "The representative from the InterGalactic Banking Clan has arrived. Shall he be escorted in?"

Bastille looked up, narrowing his eyes as his mind switched tracks. He'd expected this meeting, and at long last it had come to fruition. "Very well. Escort him to the inner court."

The servant paused momentarily in confusion. "The inner court? Will you not be receiving him in your study?"

Bastille waved the servant's question aside. "A meeting with a representative of the InterGalactic Banking Clan surely deserves a presentation, no?" he asked rhetorically, and the servant merely nodded. "Inform what members of the court present that their presence is sought after, as well. And tell the kitchens to prepare a pot of Shajamai."

The servant bowed. "As you wish, mva'Kemotar," he said before leaving to fulfill the tasks that Bastille had commanded of him.

"Pivot! Don't stay rooted like a Shajami Tree!"

Arshad's instructions rang out across the yard as he oversaw the training of some Aran'kha. The older warrior stood tall with his hands on his hips as the younger warriors all took jabs at one another with training spears.

Sweat was dripping from them all as they trained in the heat of the day. It was harsh, but Arshad saw this as the perfect time to harden his warriors. To ensure the defence of this planet, he had to condition them to be able to defend Ra'Katha, and more specifically, the Kemotar, even on the hottest part of the day.

This endeavour was cut short, however, with the arrival of the Banking Clan representative.

The servant was breathing heavy as he brought the message to the training yards where the Minister of Defence was usually overseeing things at this time.
"Why is he summoning to court? He rarely receives guests there." he asked the servant as he took the datapad from him. Arshad had known about this meeting, but he did not expect to be summoned to court for it.
"He wants presentation, Khumruni." the servant said apologetically.
"Very well. I'll be there shortly." Arshad said before turning back to the yard. "Take a break. We'll finish this later." he told his warriors before leaving for the Palace. On the way, he ordered all defences on standby and high alert - just in case. He never left anything to chance. He was too old for that.

Arshad made his way through the halls to the inner court, where he then took his place on the gallery next to other members of the court. He was interested in hearing what this meeting was about.

It was supposed to be a lazy afternoon, but a young man was ducking out of an office as a crystal paperweight flew over his head and hit the wall in front of him.
"If you ever bring rubbish like this again, I'll have you replaced!" a feminine voice shouted from within the office.

Nadia Souchon was still leaning over her desk, dark eyes flashing, when the messenger peeked around the door frame.
"Is this a bad time, Khumruni?" he asked the Minister of Trade hesitantly.
"What do you want?" she snapped as she stood up straight. It was no secret that she had a temper when you got on her bad side.

The messenger crept closer, holding out a datapad to her.
"The Kemotar requests your presence at court, my lady." he said apologetically.
Nadia took the datapad from him.
"Is the representative here already?" she asked as she did so.
"He is, Khumruni." came the answer.
"Good. I've been waiting for this." she said.

It did not take her long to reach the Palace. Her tall frame glided through the halls to the inner court where other members were already waiting.
"Relax, Nasr." she told the Minister of Defence as she took a seat next to him. "I am pretty sure the Banking Clan doesn't bite." she teased.

The days had been seeming to drag by as of late. Since her run in at the Marketplace, mulling about at home, within or around the palace, seemed mundane. Marseille found herself growing bored quite frequently, her desire to leave grounds and return to the streets grew daily, and it made her a little rebellious in the best and worst of times. However, this was never something revealed outwardly. Mar was the embodiment of good behavior, after all. She held herself with pride for who she was, and had a name and reputation to protect.

Despite her restlessness, some man wasn't going to cause her to taint those facts.

Restlessness made it difficult to focus on work and studies, however. A fact which made Marseille sigh for what had to have been the hundredth time within the hour. She found herself gazing out her open window more than she should be, and that very fact caused her to get quite the start when her study was breached. She had half turned in her seat to face the servant who brought her both news and instructions, but rather than conversate about it, the young woman frowned in thought, nodded, and then rose from her seat.

It took little to no time for Mar to make herself presentable; the heat was intense and therefore her attire was thin and light against her skin. Her hair had been pulled back and pinned up to keep it off of her neck and out of her face, and then she was well on her way to join this gathering of the inner court.

A pair of footmen were there to receive the Deputy Director and his protocol droid. Neither were especially talkative, but that suited Caulder just fine. They walked in silence, Caulder's clipped gait on the polished floor drowned out by the precisely measured march of his droid.
To Caulder's surprise and delight, it was not an office he found himself brought to, but a far larger reception area. Not quite a throneroom, but certainly somewhere that the court and their retinue could gather. And gather they did. The observing gallery was lined with an assortment of Rommers and their cousins, arranged like little nesting dolls.
How quaint. Caulder sometimes found himself wishing for a large family. Unfortunate that the opportunity to have one had long since passed him.
Caulder stepped forward, still relying on his cane for support. His protocol droid remained by the entrance, silently taking in its lavish surroundings.
"Honored Viceroy," the Deputy Director's voice was flat and rasping, "Thank you for receiving me."

Bastille made no significant outward expression, but inwardly he nodded in approval as the requested persons made their appearance. If anything they were punctual, and it would be good to have them in on the knowledge of the more consequential dealings that Ra'Katha was making. And having his councilors knowledgeable meant that there was less room for Bastille to make any error.

At last, their guest entered the room, leaning on a cane for support and accompanied by a protocol droid, who remained at the entrance as its master made his way forward towards Bastille's seat. "The honor is all mine, Deputy Director Caulder," Bastille graciously responded, and with a concise order in Wan'anteen a pair of servants emerged from the side of the room, bringing a comfortable seat for the Banking Clan representative to rest in. Once the representative had taken his seat, Bastille extended a hand, wishing to appear as oblivious as possible. "Now, I wonder: what matter has caused you to make the long journey to Ra'Katha. Or, if I may be succinct," he said, his eyes glinting as he leaned ever-so-slightly forward, "what is it that you seek?"

Arshad scowled at the Lady Souchon's teasing words.

For a woman of her temper, she was much too lighthearted most of the time.
"What self respecting warrior does not expect the unexpected? It is a big, bad galaxy out there, my lady." he told her, just as the doors opened and the honoured guest entered the hall.

The representative had manners at least.

The old General watched Caulder Dune Caulder Dune closely as he slowly approached the Kemotar as a chair was brought in for him. The man looked less impressive than he probably was. The Force Master had long since learned not to underestimate those that approached his liege.

Bastille eloquently enquired after their guest's visit. It would be interesting to hear the answer. He was quite certain the Minister of Trade sitting next to him was even more eager to hear what this man had to say.

He looked at the dark-haired lady in question.
"What do you expect out of this discussion, my lady?" he whispered to her as the representative took his seat.

"There's expectation and then there's paranoia, Nasr."

Her dark eyes were laughing at his over-alertness. But she had to admit that his paranoia has kept them and their Kemotar safe so far, despite Bastille's controversial viewpoints within the Confederacy. So she couldn't be too harsh on him.

She turned her head towards the doors as they opened and the representative of the Intergalactic Banking Clan made his entrance. Her eyes followed his gait keenly, as she had noticed him leaning on his cane for support.

Interesting.

She leaned back in her seat, one leg crossed over the other as she regarded the exchange between Bastille and the Deputy Director. She was most interested to hear what business this man brought to Ra'Katha and how it would benefit all of them.

As a chair was carried into the hall, Arshad leaned over to her, asking her what she wanted from all of this.
"All I want is more commercial opportunity for this piece of dust. Hoth knows, we need it, waht with all the controversy our dear Kemotar has been spouting abroad." she whispered back, still looking at the pair in front of her.
