Private “Ashes to Aleen”

(Gilded Veil)- Founder / C.E.O.
The small suite above The Gilded Veil pulsed with lazy warmth. Sunlight filtered through half-laced curtains, catching on bits of dust and casting golden glimmers across the mosaic tile floor. A slow hum of city life echoed beyond the walls — the kind of lull that only Nar Shaddaa midday could offer. For once, there was no hidden tension in the sound. No thrum of danger on the edges. No dark Force calling beneath the surface.

Sommer Dai sat on her knees near her open travel trunk, surrounded by half-folded dresses, satin scarves, and a tightly coiled length of synthsilk rope she never traveled without — just in case. Her hands hovered over a neatly folded garment: a deep cerulean wrap with glistening embroidery that mimicked stars. She had worn it once for a performance on Anaxes, years ago, when she'd been someone else. Someone lighter. Before the Vault. Before Azis. Before Zori Galea carved a haunting place in her memory.

Her hand trembled slightly.

A voice called from the kitchen alcove:
"Did you remember the heat regulators this time?"

Alyssa's tone was half-playful, half-reminder. She appeared a moment later, carrying a half-melted frozen fruit bar and wearing a short, sleeveless tunic with iridescent panels that shimmered with each step. Her curls were piled loosely on top of her head, a few wild strands escaping down the nape of her neck. Her freckles looked like constellations in the light.

"Aleen's surface gets brutal in the summer. Last time I was there, a guy passed out just stepping off the shuttle."

Sommer smiled faintly, though her chest felt tight.
"I packed them. And bug repellant. And water beads. But…" she let the sentence hang, eyes drifting to the folds of her old shawl again.

Sommer let the silence stretch before nodding.
"It's not the heat. Or the bugs. Or the traveling. It's that—" she gestured vaguely, "I don't know what version of me I'm supposed to be out there. Am I… the performer they invited? The survivor Signa-Ki poked and prodded? The former vessel of a Force-bound nightmare? Or just… some girl who made it through the wreckage?"

Alyssa knelt beside her, brushing her fingers over the hem of the cerulean garment. Her presence was steady — grounding — the one constant since the whole mess with Zori. And now she knew everything. About the Force. About Sommer's connection to it. And yet… she stayed.

"You're all of them," Alyssa said. "But none of them define you. You're allowed to pick who walks out of that ship onto Aleen. Hell, you're allowed to make someone new if you want."

Alyssa arched a brow and reached behind her, grabbing a holo-stick from the side table. With a flick, it activated — a ghostly projection of Sommer from a year ago shimmered into view: vibrant, spinning in a flow-dance on stage, her voice velvet and fire as she sang to a packed lounge.

She smirked.
"That girl's still in you. I've seen her when you think I'm not watching. She's just been… resting. Like a flower waiting for the right sun."

"Maybe I've been living in one," Alyssa replied with a wink, standing again and heading toward the closets. "Besides. The Aleena Nation Festival isn't just a gig. It's a celebration of life. Of resilience. They invited you because of who you are — not in spite of it."

En Route to Aleen

The skies of Nar Shaddaa peeled away, replaced by the star-speckled drift of hyperspace. Sommer sat in the co-pilot's seat of the sleek courier shuttle Alyssa had borrowed from a contact on Ord Mantell. It was compact, but beautifully tuned — and Alyssa piloted it like a dream. The nav system chirped occasionally with flight checks, but otherwise they floated in a tranquil hum.

Sommer glanced at the mirror set above the console and took in her reflection. Loose braids ran down one side of her scalp, the rest left to fall over her shoulders. Her tunic was breathable and wrapped at the waist with a silky, wine-red sash — a nod to tradition on Aleen. She looked... peaceful. Not entirely healed. But real.

Arrival – Surface of Aleen

The shuttle doors opened with a hiss, releasing the scent of scorched stone, sweet pollen, and roast spice. Aleen's surface was vibrant — sunbaked and humming with life. Towering salt-crystal formations glittered in the distance, and winding through them were thick jungles of bioluminescent vines and great spongey-rooted trees. The festival had already begun in the wide basin of the sunken plain — tents strung with woven lights, great platters of sizzling meats and fruits, and laughter that bubbled up in bursts.

The Aleena themselves — small, quick-bodied beings with expressive eyes and a deep respect for music — greeted them with an infectious energy. Children painted in swirling pigments offered Sommer flower garlands before she even stepped off the platform.

"Singer from the moon-city," one of them said in Basic, beaming. "You came back!"

Sommer blinked.
"Back?"

Sommer's lips parted. Her pulse seemed to swirl faintly in her chest — not like the dark times, not like possession. Just… like music.
Maybe it was okay that she didn't fully know who she was yet.

Maybe she just had to sing to find out.

The sun had barely dipped below the jagged edges of Aleen's sunken horizon, but the basin was already alive with light. Bonfires lined the gathering grounds like sacred beacons — glowing red, orange, and green — casting shifting shadows across the pale stone and moss-covered ground. Overhead, luminescent drifters floated lazily through the air, their soft-blue biolight pulsing in rhythm to the music.

Sommer stood in the center of the circle, framed by two braided torch poles and a trio of wooden chimes that hung gently from a vine-wrapped trellis. She wore the cerulean wrap she had debated packing, now matched with a sheer, pearl-toned underskirt that danced with every breeze. Her arms were bare, painted in winding silver lines by Aleena children earlier that evening — "for the Sky-Singer," they'd said.

Her heart beat slowly now — not with fear, but with recognition. The way it always did before a true performance. She closed her eyes. Breathed in the smell of roasted woodfruit, spice oil, and wet leaves. Let her soul stretch.

And then… she sang.

Her voice was a smooth thread of sound — soft, but undeniably clear. The kind that didn't need to shout to fill space. A call that echoed against the basin walls and seemed to reverberate through stone and root alike. She wove the ancient melody taught to her by one of the Aleena elders earlier that day, layering it with her own haunting harmonic flourishes. The language was half-Aleenan, half-improvised sound, but the meaning carried.

It was about cycles. About things lost and born again.

They appeared like ripples in the smoke — dozens of tiny, flickering beings with translucent wings, each no bigger than a child's hand. Their bodies glowed faintly with hues of amber, jade, and violet. Some carried minuscule bells or twisted petals, others trailed glimmering threads of pollen as they darted through the crowd.

And then… they began to dance.

They circled Sommer in widening rings, spinning and rising and diving like playful flames. Some hovered just long enough to rest on her shoulders or wrists before flitting away, leaving a tingling sensation in their wake. They pulsed in time to her rhythm, their wings beating out the heartbeat of the land.

The crowd erupted in whoops and hollers, stomping their feet in unison, while others began to join the dance. Alyssa clapped along, then laughed — a clear, genuine sound — and spun into the rhythm with the Aleena youth. Her eyes sparkled as she moved, catching Sommer's gaze briefly with a wink and a playful shimmy.

Sommer smiled mid-verse, the music lifting from her throat like light itself.

And that was when she saw her.

The ILA

Standing completely still among the moving tide of bodies was a tall figure cloaked in layered green and gray leathers. Draped moss, dyed furs, and embroidered bone pieces accented the garment, giving it the air of a forgotten woodland deity. A carved antelope mask with curling ivory horns covered the woman's face, and beads dangled from the mask's lower edge, swaying in the firelight.

The crowd didn't react to her as an intruder. In fact, they shifted subtly around her presence — widening the circle, instinctively giving space.

Sommer's voice caught — only for a breath — then she pushed through. She didn't know why, but she couldn't stop. Something in her spirit surged forward, as if the melody had taken on a life of its own.

The figure made no move. No dance. No sound.

But her eyes — though hidden — were locked on Sommer.

Laughing, twirling in time with the music, Alyssa suddenly stopped mid-step. The Force shimmered like heat around her, tickling the edge of her awareness. She blinked and steadied herself.

It wasn't dark — not like Zori or the Vault. But it was old. Wild. The kind of Force presence that hummed in the bones of planets, that whispered from stones and trees rather than people. Something was moving beneath the surface of the celebration — not threatening, but awakening.

She turned toward the fireline and spotted the figure instantly. The masked woman hadn't been there moments ago. Yet every Aleena nearby regarded her with reverence, even awe. Some bowed. A few placed petals at her feet.

"The ILA," Alyssa murmured under her breath.

She remembered the name. It had come up during their descent briefing — spoken in hushed tones by the local official who guided them to the basin. "The High Priestess. Guardian of the sacred weave. Appears only when the old songs are sung true."

A shiver ran down Alyssa's arms.

Then — in an almost imperceptible moment — the ILA turned her head. Not toward Sommer.

Toward Alyssa.

As if sensing that Alyssa could feel her.

A warning? A beckoning?

The firelight flickered, and the drifters overhead dimmed slightly. The air became cooler, as if the festival itself held its breath.

The music crescendoed. Her voice climbed, resonating with power she hadn't known she'd brought with her. The sprites spiraled upward like smoke. The sky seemed to ripple. And just before the last breath left her lips, Sommer felt something shift deep in the planet's crust — like something old stirred far below the basin.

Then silence.

And then—

A single note, not hers, answered from the forest edge. Deep. Echoing.

Sommer blinked, chest rising.

The ILA raised one hand slowly — not toward Sommer, not toward Alyssa — but toward the earth beneath them. Then she turned and vanished between two trees… her body dissolving like mist into the tangled green.

The crowd erupted in celebration. Food was passed, new fires lit. Children danced. Some of the Aleena elders murmured in excited tones, glancing at Sommer as though she had just rewritten an old prophecy.
