Private Yesterday's lovers, today's strangers

He didn't say anything for minutes, his body still but for his eyes as they seemed to search about for some understanding. It was a lot, and yet, it wasn't. He felt sad, but in a way at least he hadn't been forgotten because no one loved him. They were just dead. He'd felt empty since he'd begun to pull his life back together over the hole of family and loved ones. Yet he'd also found people who stood in that empty hole now and despite being sure his unremembered parents were worthy of remembrance he simply couldn't. He felt guilty for that as well. How did one hear their whole family was dead and just reply... ok.

In the end someone had come looking. It had taken years and by the sounds of it they had many of their own tragedies in the fighting that had occurred in the past. He'd made peace with so many things, most of that due to all the people who'd brought light into his new life. In an honest way he'd moved on and found peace. Perhaps that's why this shook him less then it should have?

He thought of a father figure and an unknown shadow didn't come up, but his mentor who had scooped him up and taught him his trade. Talked through the nights as he dealt with his demons and in the end lifted him up until he was now the Captain of his own ship. He thought of a mother and it was an old nurse, an Ithorian who had helped him through the worst of his injuries and feelings of loss. She'd taught him to stop and think, to give himself a minute to work things back out. Then she'd brought him to his mentor and arranged an apprenticeship with him to get Crow back on his feet and in his own life. Yet he'd always wondered at the shadows, but now he supposed he would never know.

Suddenly that part hurt, the never knowing. That cut deeper then he thought it still would. Perhaps he could though, perhaps through this friend who was no longer a friend. Yet he knew she was, and more somehow. What a terrible pain she must be going through at this very moment to shield him from it as well and pretend. To believe someone was alive and then have it snatched away from you. Hope kept a man going, but it could also wound.

"I'm sorry, it's a lot to think about, Mysa." He used the name purposely, as much to admit he knew her somehow, but more to throw her a rope in what must be a terrible place. "I'm glad we were friends. I can't tell you why, but emotions pull strongly at me when I look at you. I don't know what happened between us, but I know it was happy. That we cared for one another. So maybe that is where we should start? Let the past lie, and tell me about Mysa Snowstrider Princess of some far away land. Perhaps a friendship can be reforged all the stronger through the loss and pain."
