The Yamato-class Cruiser, also known as the Yamato-class Star Destroyer, was a warship designed for planetary defense, planetary assault, troop transport, and ship-to-ship combat. It was produced by the Republic of Mayferria, and saw use as part of the Republic of Mayferria's fleet, and Iron Imperial Navy. It was most commonly found protecting the borders of the Republic of Mayferria, and that of its vital trade routes.

Due to the exorbitant nature of constructing such a vessel, few of these Cruisers were fielded by the single-planet Republic. Fewer yet survived the One Sith's invasion. However, following the Republic of Mayferria's integration within the Iron Empire, the Yamato-class Star Destroyer drew renewed breath. Production of the Cruiser saw a substantial increase, with many of these vessels being fielded as part of the Iron Imperial Navy.

Born from mixed-heritage, the Yamato-class Cruiser featured an armament comprised of both Human, and Chiss, weaponry. The bulk of its firepower came in the form of it's forty General Purpose Warhead Tubes: powerful launchers that could utilize a large variety of ammunition, including that of the Conner Net. Megamaser, and Turbolaser, batteries, in addition to various defensive emplacements, rounded out the rest of the Cruiser's weaponry.

Like others of similar design, the Yamato-class Cruiser's weaponry could not adequately be brought to bear on targets to its rear. This made the Cruiser vulnerable to attacks from behind. Additionally, the bridge tower served as a glaring target for enemy vessels or starfighters. If destroyed, it would take some time for the secondary-bridge to take control of the vessel.
