Description: A standard Totem of Familiars, so far as is understood by the Witchmasters, allows a Witch to do one of two things:
  • Summon a spirit of a given animal
  • Call a nearby animal of that type, and empower the animal with the Force

Totems of Familiars...will call an animal to your side and hold the animal there as long as you possess the totem. The summoned beast is blessed with magick. The energies of these familiars help crafters accomplish some of the most difficult magicks. - The Book of Sith, p.112
Generally, Totems of Familiars focus on animals native to Dathomir. These can include brackaset, burra fish, eollu, raven, etc. However, the Witchmasters must range far afield in the galaxy, and it can be difficult for the talisman to find a suitable living or spectral brackaset when, say, raiding Coruscant. Thus, the Totem of the Unfamiliar is a Totem of Familiars optimized for other kinds of animals. Any given Totem of the Unfamiliar can be, through ritual, attuned to various common creatures. For example:
Once a living or dead critter is summoned and empowered, the usual totemic benefits can apply (translation, reconnaissance, combat aid, etc.). In all respects, the Totem of the Unfamiliar functions identically to a Totem of Familiars, save that it applies to different kinds of animals than the native fauna of Dathomir. A Totem of the Unfamiliar can be knotted in the hair, worn as a pendant or ring, worn on the belt, or incorporated into clothing.
