• Description: Whisperbirds were large black avians from Csilla. They had red eyes, and typically lived on the ground, though they were not flightless. Their wingspan was among the largest on Csilla at six feet. Though they hunted in forests, it was believed they lived in the ice caverns between the different caverns of the Great Houses. Unlike the Chiss, who were not adapted to Csilla's cold climate, the Whisperbird did just fine in the ice allowing it to thrive almost anywhere. They were called whisperbirds because the sound of their wings sounded like whispers. They preyed on rodents, insects, reptiles, and other birds.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Whisperbirds were large avians endemic to the Chiss homeworld of Csilla. Black or rarely white feathered with red eyes similar to the Chiss, they were once common pets and hunted for sport in the large subterranean forests of the ice world. After the destruction of Csilla they were considered nearly extinct with only a few hundred of the birds remaining off-world in domestic settings. As a bird of great significance to the Chiss, the Ascendancy Remnant's interim Syndicure and Aristocra moved to have the bird recognized as the Chiss national bird and breeding programs were put into place to help bring the species back from the brink. It thrived on other Ascendancy worlds and by 900 ABY had been brought out of extinction, though hunting of the birds remained extremely regulated.

GENERAL INFORMATION

• Name: Chiss Nightdragon
• Designation: Semi-Sentient

• Description: Nightdragons were large reptavian predators native to one of the Chiss worlds. It sported both a strong beak and sharp teeth for breaking open carapace, cracking bone, and ripping flesh. Despite its wings it was not capeable of true flight and instead relied on updrafts to maintain lift. Sharp claws allowed it to climb on most surfaces and burrow into the sides of cliffs, into hardwood trees, and beneath the ground. Like the Chiss, it had glowing red eyes and blue-black plumage. Tough scales protected it beneath its feathers and could dissipate the energy of most small arms fire, though its wings and underbelly were especially vulnerable. Its long, whip-like tail was used to balance while running at high speeds and its prehensile nature aided in its ability to climb the tall, thick trees of its homeworld. The scales could bend light giving the creature the ability to nearly vanish from sight. When up close, its scales had an odd oily sheen to them that made the light reflected on them appear in various shades of blue and purple like an oil spill.

• Religion/Beliefs: The nightdragon has been a symbol of strength and ferocity among the Chiss people for thousands of years. It is a cunning hunter and to be likened to a Nightdragon would be high praise to any Chiss warrior. The Nightdragon was the namesake of the Chiss Nightdragon corps and the namesake of one of their most powerful classes of warship.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
Discovered by Chiss Explorers upon colonizing the world of Naporar, the Nightdragon has been entrenched in Chiss lore for thousands of years. It was considered the most fearsome creature in Chiss lore until legendary Chiss admiral Mitth'raw'nuruodo began to utilize the Chimera, a non-Chiss creature from elsewhere in the Chaos, throughout his career. They were nearly hunted to extinction at one time but were bred in captivity, saving the species. However, Csilla was the focus of efforts to save the creature, and the Brotherhood of the Maw's destruction of the planet eliminated most Nightdragons in Chiss space. Only a few wild specimens remained on Naporar, the beast's homeworld, and some survived by being part of private collections off-world, once again bringing the beast to the edge of extinction.
