Irina had never set foot on Dromund Kaas before, there was a darkness here that Jutrand didn't possess, a history that spanned a millennia that hummed beneath the surface of the city and the wilderness beyond. Had she had more time, she might have explored, dug a little deeper and truly taken a chance to explore the holy world. Maybe one day, she'd ask Gerwald to give her leave to take a pilgrimage to Korriban. Now though she had a mission, albeit a personal one, but she was still determined to complete it.

The box in her hands had been freshly wrapped, the original soft velvet wrapping had been damaged in Aerik's fall and the moisture in the terrarium had gotten to it before she's found it. A fresh box, fresh velvet wrapping, tied with a neat bow and the life day gift was ready to be hand delivered. She stopped several feet from his door, staring at it, suddenly nervous, fingers drumming lightly on the box. Maybe she should have sent him a message first...maybe he didn't want to see her... the last time they'd been alone she'd come on more than a little strong. She shook her head. She was being ridiculous, if nothing else, he was her best friend. All she was doing was delivering a gift to her best friend.

Easy.

She closed the distance and knocked.

In the time frame that Skadi had spent with Aerik and gotten to know him a little more, she found that she rather enjoyed his company. After arriving on Dromund Kaas, she had spent time actually living with him - or sharing his personal quarters. Embarrassing moments had occurred (that still brought a smile to her face when she reminisced about it), she had cooked him (both of them) food, even managed to clean his living space…things to keep her occupied when she wasn’t going through her usual rituals, until the day arrived when she was summoned before the one who ruled Dromund Kaas.

She had her own quarters now…but she still enjoyed Aerik’s company from time to time. They worked together a bit more now, and did missions together. They also went on a hunt together, even. That was another fond memory that she liked to recall when she lay in bed and sleep eluded her.

On this particular day, Skadi was in Aerik’s quarters. He was not there, having gone out for one reason or another. While waiting for him to return, she had taken the liberty to shower in his refresher, and was in the process of drying off when she heard a knock at the door. She looked around the bathing chamber and realized, to her chagrin, that she hadn’t brought in her own clothes to change into - and her other clothes were being washed.

Chit…” she murmured, as she wrapped the towel around herself before quickly looking for something to throw on. She settled on one of Aerik’s shirts, acutely aware that it had his smell, and silently apologized to him for wearing his clothes. She would make sure to wash it after she dealt with whatever or whoever was at the door. And thankfully it was long enough to hide the fact that she wasn't able to find bottoms to wear. Surely it wouldn't matter anyway; it wasn't like whoever was at the door was going to make sure she was wearing pants or trousers.

Brushing her still damp hair back from her face and over her shoulders, Skadi stepped across the chamber in her bare feet towards the door and slid it open to greet whoever had knocked, and golden eyes settled upon the young woman who stood on the other side of the door, holding an item in her hands.

Who the feth was this??

...can I help you?” Skadi inquired in a neutral voice, her accent thick on her words, standing there in a way that said that she expected an answer and quickly, so she could get back to whatever it was she had been doing.

The cold wall felt good against the bare flesh of his sweaty back. Aerik knew he couldn't rest against it too long for fear that his body temperature dropped too low. He had learned the hard way what happened when he let himself get too cold. It seemed the pup was still learning new things about his species. Gerwald and Naedira, his parents, had not known what their children would be. Such a thing likely had made the prospect of the pups a frightening thing, even if it was a good thing. Still, Aerik did not need a repeat of what had happened just a couple of weeks prior.

He shoved off the wall as he tried to shake the memory out of his head. Aerik could not believe he fainted like that in front of Irina, especially after she had given him a gift. It was long gone by now. The Second was being mobilized, at least the rumor of it was there. How many months would pass before they were able to see each other again?

Aerik sighed.

It could have been worse. He could be alone. Those days seemed to be long gone as well. Despite the past five years without his siblings or his best friend, the pup now had the company of a fellow apprentice. Though, even that was complicated. Had he not forgotten Skadi was staying in his quarters while waiting for a summons to see Prazutis, they could have avoided her seeing much more of the wolf pup than either of them had intended.

He was still a little embarrassed when he thought about it. The mistake had been innocent, but it had been made regardless. Skadi seemed to have handled it well, and the meal she made afterward more than helped settle the awkwardness of the moment. Aerik supposed he needed to come to terms with the fact he was no longer a child, but he tired to avoid thinking of… distracting extracurriculars.

His training was more important. His parents told him to avoid distraction. Prazutis wanted him to focus on becoming something more. Discipline was required. Aerik took it too far perhaps. His stoicism frustrated many among the Kanite. He appeared dispassionate. Aerik knew it was not the case, and perhaps his master knew as well. Aerik had simply found a way to channel his emotions and feelings into something others wished they could have.

Power.

The Kanite Adjudicators looked down upon him. A nod of approval came from each of them. Orange irises, almost ablaze with fire, scanned the carriage which he had left on the dirt floor of the colosseum. Dromund Kaas had lost several apprentices, but it had gained a strong son.

He did his best to wipe the blood which stuck to his torso, but it had already begun to dry. What he needed more than anything was a shower, and a long nap. Aerik had earned his freedom for the next few days as some new test would be determined for him.

Thoughts of the future filled his mind. Prazutis was certain to hear about Aerik's success, had he not already. Hopefully there would be more missions, more time to leave the halls of the dark palace without an escort. It was time for the galaxy to know who he was. He was not just the son of Gerwald Lechner Gerwald Lechner and Naedira Darcrath Naedira Darcrath .

He was Aerik Lechner.

Of all the things Irina expected to see on the other side of the door she was not one of them. The moment struck her hard, icy fingers curling around her heart and crushing it as her dark gaze travelled slowly from her still wet dark hair and golden eyes, to the shirt that was several sizes too big and definitely Aerik's, to the bare legs where rivulets of water still ran down them. A muscle in her jaw ticked as she looked back up, the only outward display of the fury that began to take root.

"These are Aerik's quarters." It was an accusation. Skadi should not have been there. Irina was supposed to be surprising him and instead...

All this time? Her mind flickered to Stewjon where she'd first seen them together, where he'd been bare chested and all too comfortable with Skadi for her liking. And she had seen the way Skadi had looked at him. Was this why he'd been so distant? Did he simply not have the gall to tell her the truth? Her fingers tightened on the box, the temperature around her rising a few degrees as her anger rose, a ring of fire around her dark irises flaring as she took a step forward.

"Where is he?"

For a moment, all Skadi could do was stand there, still dripping wet, and stare at the other woman - clueless to the fact that this other girl might have had connections with or to Aerik. She noticed the other chocolate hued girl’s eyes look her over, the twitch of muscle at the jaw. Skadi’s eyes narrowed ever so slightly at this, though she didn’t show any other outward sign that she was bothered or alert.

"
These are Aerik's quarters." came the terse response after a moment. The young Valkyri woman blinked, unsure if this stranger was being obtuse or not. Skadi thought she heard a tone of accusation laced into the words, but she couldn’t understand why that would be the case.

Yes. You are correct.” Skadi replied back in a blunt manner.

That was when she felt the air around her and the other woman shift, warble a touch. She felt like the air around her was beginning to heat up, and her eyes narrowed further. She could feel the swell of energy, of power, and one eyebrow arched towards her hairline as she noticed the other young woman’s eyes flare.

What was this girl’s problem?

"
Where is he?" the ebon girl asked again, her voice sharper, more accusing.

He went out, but I do not know where. I do not keep track of Aerik’s comings and goings. It is not my place. He should return soon however, if you wish to come inside and wait for him…?” the raven haired Valkyri inquired, her voice carefully neutral to keep the strangely rising tension at bay. Skadi waited to see what this girl’s response would be, though she had the pricklings of warning that something wasn’t quite right with this one.

Irina read everything she didn't say. That Aerik wasn't here and she was, meant this was a common occurrence, why else would she be so comfortable to use his shower and wear his shirts. On top of that, it was clear that Skadi had no idea who she was, and yet still felt it prudent to invite her in...like she lived here.

She took a small, measured breath, not to quiet the anger, but simply to maintain her composure before she stepped forward in silent acceptance of the invitation to come in, Skadi would either move, or be moved. Irina didn't much care either way, her eyes swept around the quarters once not truly taking it in, besides finding the surface of a console table to place the gift upon before turning her attention back on Skadi, her fingers flexing slightly before she clasped them behind her back.

"How long have you been staying here, Skadi?" the question was quiet. How long had this been going on, was it before the Hunt? Did it start after? She let the heat rise around her a little more, watching the dark haired woman for every tiny expression. People told more in what they didn't say, than in the words they spoke. She'd learned that lesson long before she'd learned how to wield fire.

The tension was palpable, though Skadi still couldn't understand why - though she was beginning to piece together some clues. This foreign woman was producing heat, and her eyes still glowed as if ablaze from within. It was a warning sign to the Valkryi, one she took keen notice of - but made no gesture or comment towards. Already her mind was beginning to stir and question, and once more her eyes flickered to the other woman's hands which gripped the gift item oh so tightly.

She brought a gift... for Aerik. Skadi was smart and quick enough to piece together the puzzle that was before her. In her world, woman often gave gifts to those they were interested in. Was it possible that this ebon skinned woman was interested in Aerik and was trying to woo him?

The other woman seemed to accept Skadi's invite to come in, and she stepped aside as the other girl stepped past her. Only when the other girl was inside did the Valkyri realize her possible mistake: this girl was producing so much heat that it was making the Valkyri sweat profusely - an annoyance for sure, especially since she had just showered. On top of that, she realized belatedly that the heat could cause problems inside Aerik's chambers...and if that happened, then Skadi would be held responsible.

Still, she kept her composure. She would get to the bottom of this...strange issue, one way or another. But she knew one thing for certain now. She was not leaving this girl alone in Aerik's chambers under any circumstances, especially right now.

She observed how the other girl's eyes swept Aerik's chamber, taking notice of everything. If she was looking for any further signs of Skadi's presence here, she would find next to nothing - all of Skadi's belongings had been transferred to her own living quarters, and the Valkyri was silently kicking herself for not using her own space now. Oh well; she couldn't go back in time now. Better to embrace this moment for what it was.

"How long have you been staying here, Skadi?"

The raven haired Valkyri woman turned her golden eyes back to the guest, their amber depths cool but sharp. Not once had she given her name to this stranger - so how the feth did she know her name? Skadi pulled her arms behind her back, standing straighter with well trained discipline that had been ingrained in her since birth, and spoke more sharply to the chocolate skinned girl in front of her. "Why does my comings and goings here matter to you? I do not know you and you do not know me - so why do you care? And how did you come by my name? I certainly didn't give it to you."

She was aware that her words, and her tone, might provoke the other girl further - but Skadi was, if anything, blunt and honest with her thoughts and opinions.

But she would, at least, answer this girl's probing question anyway to satisfy that poisonous curiosity.

And perhaps to play with fire,
just a little bit.

"But I will answer your question if it will satisfy your curiosity. I am not staying with Aerik currently - though I did for some time while I awaited summons before Darth Prazutis. Aerik agreed to house me until other arrangements could be made. Sometimes I stop by to pay him a visit as I do enjoy his company. Does this answer suffice for you?"

Another pause, as Skadi canted her head to one side and observed the girl more closely - noticing how any items near her were beginning to warp or even melt. Sweat was now dripping freely down Skadi's face and body, soaking the shirt she was wearing and making it cleave more closely to her skin and her curves, making it appear as if she had just stepped out of the shower mere seconds ago.

"...Perhaps it might be better for you to wait outside before you burn his quarters down, hmm? I do not think Aerik would appreciate that much. I imagine it might sour whatever is going on between the two of you, ja?"

The corner of her mouth might have turned upward briefly at the indignation with which Skadi responded, the use of her name serving to stir her out of the politeness she had greeted Irina with. Good, that would make her actions a little more justifiable. She chose not to answer the how. Somehow she didn't think that her making a point of knowing who she was after the Great Hunt on Stewjon, hell she could probaly drop Gerwald's name and use his position as an excuse. But Skadi not knowing might benefit her.

She listened, dark eyes narrowing. Not staying currently? She did for some time! Her jaw ticked again as she clamped her teeth together. Aerik hadn't said a word, not once had he thought to mention it. And she still came by? She still welcomed in guests, used his shower, wore his shirts. Again the temperature increased, furniture begging to groan and crack as it began to warp.

Irina smiled at her discomfort, a humourless chuckle in her throat as Skadi took a shot in the dark and found her mark. She took a step towards her. "No. I don't think I will. Aerik has known me long enough that a little burnt furniture is not going to sour our friendship. You on the other hand?" Heat flared, source less and without flame but meant to harm, to make it difficult to breathe.

Skadi watched the way the corner of the other woman’s lips turned upwards in a half smile ever so briefly - as if she thought she was gaining some edge over the Valkyri woman. Despite the growing tensions…no…hostility that was brewing, Skadi remained as she was - though some voice in the back of her mind told her it might be prudent to prepare herself for…something.

So she did, quietly pulling her power inwards and letting it build, feeling the coldness of it build within her core. It was like a growing winter storm, muted and soft, but undeniable. All that was needed was for her to unleash it, though she withheld such an action for the moment. It was bad enough that one woman was damaging Aerik’s quarters, but two?

Truth be told, Skadi was already over this whole situation. But she was here now, and she was face to face with this woman who seemed to have decided that she was some foul witch from the Nether. Skadi had tried to be polite, respectful even, but such things went right over the head of this particular person.

She’d seen women like this before, in her clan. Jilted or jealous lovers. Fights amongst women over a favored male in Skadi’s clan were not uncommon; she had never experienced it herself, personally - but she’d seen it in action enough times to recognize the signs now.

Now Skadi was in a position where she had to decide what she was going to do next; yes, she thought Aerik was handsome, but he had not noticed her mild flirtations or responded back to them. And now that she was seeing this girl in front of her, it all made sense.

She was just curious as to why Aerik had never mentioned this girl to her before. She would have shut down everything in an instant if she had known he was already taken.

Maybe…maybe he wasn’t taken yet? And this girl was trying her best to win his heart? Did that mean that Skadi had…a chance?

The chocolate hued girl smiled and chuckled without humor at Skadi’s remarks, then stepped closer towards Skadi. "No. I don't think I will. Aerik has known me long enough that a little burnt furniture is not going to sour our friendship. You on the other hand?"

Those words were the only warning Skadi received and in the same moment that the heat flared that she released her hold on her power, a nearly invisible but frosty shield surrounding her that interacted with the intense heat to form steam as the very ground beneath Skadi crystalized ever so briefly into ice. Skadi’s eyes turned ice cold, like frozen amber, and her smile was the same: frosty, cold, and merciless.

Like the winter storms of Toola.

What? You think Aerik and I are sleeping together? That we are lovers?Skadi sneered, cutting straight to the point. She huffed, her breath misting in the clash between fire and ice.I won't deny my interest in him but if you know him as well as you claim you do, then you would already know the truth. The man is denser than a frozen lake - you could flash your body at him and he'd still not catch the hint! He is my co-apprentice and my comrade. And you clearly are a jealous lover. I’ve seen plenty of your kind to spot you a mile away in a snow storm.

Skadi pushed back - not physically with her own body, but with the frozen energy that surrounded her. All that this intruder thought to burn, Skadi sought to cool and freeze. If this girl thought to make it hard for her to breathe from the intense heat that was building towards a true fire, then Skadi worked to make the very air in her lungs turn to steam and make her choke on her own breath and words.

I’ve no desire to quarrel with you. I was not hostile towards you, but you were towards me. You came here with your assumptions, not me. I have nothing to hide from you. Perhaps your fury should be directed at Aerik as he seems to be the source of your jealous rage.” she hissed, as ice began to wrap itself around her right forearm, building gradually as if it was forming some sort of weapon…or perhaps a blockade by which to guard herself with - an icy shield that bore the stylized symbol of a howling's wolf's head upon it.

The only thing Aerik had on his mind was a hot shower. The thought bordered on fixation as he moved through the corridor, muscles tight from exertion and concentration still clinging to him from the examinations. Others might have welcomed the cold after that kind of work, but he had learned recently that it was not his ally. Heat loosened him. Heat restored order.

His thoughts drifted despite his effort to keep them contained.

They returned, uninvited, to that night.

Irina had not even been in the corridor, yet the embarrassment lingered all the same. The way his body had failed him after the gift, the way consciousness had slipped out from under him without warning, still unsettled him. That was not how he had wanted the evening to end. He had not even known for certain whether they were going to meet that night, but the possibility had been there. The idea of exploring an ice maze with her had felt strangely exciting, though he had not allowed himself to dwell on why.

Mazes had always been their place, or as close to one as anything ever was.

When his father had taken her, Aerik had not imagined they would cross paths again. That assumption had been shattered in an almost absurd way when they encountered one another at the banquet following the destruction of the Death Star. Skadi had not been near him then, but the memory of that celebration lingered anyway. He remembered positioning himself among the Second Legion, instinctively shielding both himself and her from attention. He felt more at ease among the berserkers than among the Kainate, though even that distinction had begun to blur.

He was not certain that change was for the better.

He missed the simplicity of Stewjon, and the Iron Legion came closest to resembling that life within the Sith Order. He had never fully understood how his father had traded it for something so different, though he suspected the truth was more complicated than he liked to admit. Aerik tried not to judge him, even when questions surfaced unbidden. In the end, the decision did not matter. That path was what led Gerwald to Naedira, and without that union, Aerik would not exist.

For that, he was grateful.

His quarters were close now. Ordinarily, he would have felt relief, but tension reached him before the door ever came into view. Skadi was there. The scent of freshly cut wood lingered in the air, sharp and familiar, but it was layered with something else he recognized just as instinctively. The temperature around him felt wrong. The questions came faster as he approached, each one compounding the last. Why was she here, and why did it feel like the space itself was bracing for impact.

His pace quickened, not because of the shower waiting beyond the door, but because he sensed that if he did not reach his quarters soon, there might not be a space left to return to. This was not among the outcomes he had considered for the day. Irina’s presence alone would have been enough of a surprise to demand explanation, which he assumed had been intentional. Skadi being there as well unsettled him far more. She had her own quarters and rarely appeared without notice.

Something was wrong.

The moment he entered, the tension resolved into clarity. He could not see flame, but he felt the heat radiating from Irina all the same. The vapor that rolled toward Skadi explained the sudden chill that had crept into the air. Aerik kept his distance from Skadi without thinking, aware enough to know that proximity to active ice was unwise. It was a new manifestation, one that suggested her training under Prazutis had reached deeper than he realized. Some trace of home lingered in it, much like the desert still clung to Rin.

He struggled to find a reason they would be fighting at all, let alone here, until his eyes finally settled on Skadi. Her hair was still damp, and she wore one of his shirts, and only one. He was not so oblivious as to miss what that implied. Nor was he unaware of how Irina felt, even if he continued to avoid the subject whenever she pressed him.

That avoidance was not fair, and he knew it.

Aerik had never lacked awareness of his own emotions. He had simply learned to keep them from dictating his actions or becoming leverage for his enemies. He avoided the subject because he was conflicted, not because he was ignorant. Rin had been his closest friend at the academy, and it required willful blindness to miss how she had grown into someone striking. Skadi’s flirtations may have escaped him at times, but he understood the way her attention lingered, just as he understood the way Irina’s did.

What unsettled him was not the presence of those feelings, but the realization that he could no longer pretend they were simple.

“Fokkðu mér…”

He shook his head and, and against all his better judgement, walked into his apartment.

“What the hell is going on here?”

That they weren't sleeping together didn't bring her any kind of comfort. If anything it just made matter worse. If they had been sleeping together then at least Irina would know where she stood, the betrayal would still sting but she could move on instead remaining stuck where Aerik kept leaving her. Never really knowing whether he was interested or not, too afraid to push to hard and too afraid to pull away. So yes, she was jealous, she was jealous that Skadi had what she could never.

Proximity.

"Trust me when I tell you, you have never seen my kind." she spat in response as Skadi's ice spread seeking to cool what she was warping. Her composure cracking as the intense desire to incinerate her, to reduce her to ash simply for existing where Irina could not, As ice grew and took shape on Skadi's arm fire wreathed her own, her hand lifting when she felt him, when she heard the door and the soft swearing.

Dark eyes moved from Skadi to look at him, something in her chest seemed to crack pain flickered across her face the sorrow before settling into something hard born from anger. She said nothing, keeping her eyes on him as the flame wreathed hand stretched towards Skadi and erupted, not with orange or yellow hues but with the intense blue and white heat that said she wanted nothing to be left behind.

The heat hit him the moment the door slid open, sharp enough to prickle along his skin. Aerik swore under his breath and moved without stopping to assess the situation. Fire surged across the room, not wild but focused, and Skadi stood directly in its path. Aerik stepped between them on instinct, placing himself squarely where the flames were headed. The fire washed over him and broke apart, dispersing against his presence without leaving so much as a mark. This was his nature, and who he was. Ice hurt him. Fire did not.

"Irina," he said, his voice firm but controlled. "Stop."

He drove his hand down and pulled hard. Stone answered immediately. The floor split and surged upward, a thick wall of rock rising between him and the fire in a single, brutal motion. It locked into place with a low groan, cutting the heat off entirely and sealing Skadi behind it. The structure was dense and unrefined, built to endure rather than intimidate.

Aerik remained where he stood, positioned between the threat and the person it had been aimed at.

"I don’t know what this is about," he said evenly. "But whatever it is, this ends now."

The air still shimmered with heat. Fire clung to Irina's hand, its color pale and intense, promising nothing but erasure if released again. His eyes flicked over to Skadi, they pleased with her to let the ice go. Aerik did not approach either of them, nor did he raise his voice.

"This is my space, and I will not allow either of you to turn it into a battlefield."

His eyes flicked briefly to the stone wall to confirm it held, then returned to Irina.

"Stand down… both of you."

He stayed between them, unmoving, fully aware that the next decision would belong to them, and prepared to answer it if necessary.

The situation with the newcomer devolved quickly; Skadi held her ground despite the hostility being expressed her way in the form of growing heat and scathing words spat her way. She wasn’t going to argue with this hothead - but she still stood by what she had said.

She knew this kind rather well. At least when it came to jealousy. And this other woman reeked of it. Where this ebon skinned woman was all fire and fury, Skadi was ice and frigid composure. It allowed her to think more clearly, to see things a little better. No, she did not know this woman nor her story, her life, her complexities. Jealousy was the manifestation of a deeper root issue, and Skadi was quickly realizing that it had its roots in Aerik Lechner-son. This was not something that Skadi sought to become entangled with; she had no interest in coming between two lovers.

Why hadn’t Aerik said something about this sooner?!

Why had she been so short sighted to come here instead of going straight to her own quarters? His were closer, easier to reach. She wanted to be in and out before he returned, like she never existed. But it seemed that the gods had other plans in store. She grumbled at them, always playing their games with the hearts of men.

Skadi’s icy shield had fully formed when the white and blue flames erupted from the other woman’s hand; fire and ice met violently and Skadi’s face contorted with focus. She had to constantly rebuild the ice that melted away and turned to hot steam, and it was eating into her energy reserves.

Aerik please return quickly. Otherwise I may not be able to save your lover…or your living quarters - she growled within her mind. She would hold for as long as possible, but already she was thinking of ways that she could dispatch this woman to save her own life.

Mercy is currency of the weak - the words of Lord Prazutis echoed through her mind in that moment, and they intermingled with the voice and teachings of her own Father. Show no mercy to your foes Skadi, for they will give you none. You fight to kill, or you will die.

Was this woman a foe? Even though she was clearly blinded by her jealous rage? She would kill Skadi the second she had a chance to, that much the Valkyri was certain of. She was already trying to kill her!

Nothing came easy in the world of the Sith.

In her other hand, a blade of ice began to form, as her decision was made. She pressed forward, one step after another, to close the distance between her and the other woman. She would only have one chance at this.

Through the roar of the fire and the crackling and spitting of boiling water and hissing steam - Skadi heard a familiar voice and her heart lurched in her chest.

Aerik! He was here! …How long had he been there?

It didn’t matter, for a heartbeat later, the young man himself appeared and then stood between the two of them, the flames of her attacker striking him and…flowing around him? That sight broke Skadi’s concentration just a touch and her defense faltered, enough that the heat of the white hot fire bubbled the surface of her exposed skin and searing pain rippled through the young Valkyri as she sustained instant burns.

But the heat vanished in a moment; she heard Aerik speak a name, the other girl’s name - Irina - told her to stop and then the floor between them groaned and split and surged, creating a wall that separated them all. The heat ceased immediately, effectively cutting Skadi off from her attacker. Aerik spoke in an even tone of voice, informing them both that whatever was going on, was coming to an end immediately. Skadi had no qualms about that but she wasn’t sure the other girl, Irina, would listen. Aerik looked at Skadi, his gaze imploring her to stop.

The ice shield on her arm, and the partially formed blade in her other hand, vanished into puffs of fine ice dust that drifted away. She was no longer armed, no longer defending herself. The wall was her only defense against the hothead on the other side.

He told them both to stand down, that he would not allow either of them to turn his space into a battlefield. Skadi felt a prickle of shame, then a surge of righteous indignation that intermingled with the pulsing, searing pain on her face and arms. She didn’t even want to look in a mirror to see the burns that surely marred her ivory skin.

I was only defending myself, Aerik. She stated in a low voice that she hoped was devoid of tremble.I was trying to protect your space from burning to the ground. I gave her every opportunity to be civil and she rejected them all. She wouldn’t even let me leave. What was I supposed to do? Let her burn me to death?!

Skadi inhaled and turned her bright, golden eyes to Aerik, their depths sharp and accusing and…hurt. You should have told me you had a lover. I’ve gone this entire time believing you were unattached to anyone. I feel like such a fool now!

Sith-corruption.png

Satisfaction, however brief, came in sound of her hiss of pain, in the distinct scent of seared flesh, even as her flames rolled off Aerik like they always had. Of course he would defend her, the moment she'd sought to engulf Skadi in fire she'd known he would intervene. The command in his tone did nothing to settle her anger. He dared to deny her? when he was the root of all of this? His inability to speak, to show what he truly felt, if he truly felt anything.

The ground cracked and ground, lifting to form a protective wall around Skadi and only then did she relent, but only because this was new. A skill she had not seen him use before. Flame ringed eyes assessed it like the obstacle it was.

"Really Aerik? You cannot possibly find a reason in that thick skull of yours as to why this might be happening?" She snapped in response, a hollow laugh echoing from her at Skadi's voice drifted from behind the wall defending her honour. It seemed Aerik hadn't spoken of her either. Another throb of pain split across her chest, the fire the wreathed her hand dissipating as her face fell.

"You don't talk about me." The accusation was quiet. She didn't need him to declare her as anything to anyone, but surely after everything he would at least talk about her as a friend? "You don't talk to me. Any moment I try to get has to be stolen and the first chance I get to actually carve out some time with intent? Another woman answers the door, wearing your shirt, using your shower. A woman you lived with and FAILED TO MENTION!"

The shout echoed around the room, heat rolling off her in waves as she took a step towards him. "Don't you dare tell me to stand down, Aerik."

“What am I supposed to think, Rin?” Aerik said, his voice rising despite his effort to keep it steady. “I did not even know you were coming, and I had no idea Skadi was going to be here either.”

The words came out sharper than he intended. Aerik was not a perfect stoic, not yet, and whatever discipline he normally relied on had been worn thin by the scene he had walked into. This was not how he expected to end the day. From any angle, the reaction felt justified. This was his apartment. This was the place he retreated to when everything else demanded too much of him.

And now it was being torn apart.

“When have we ever been together in a way that required that kind of explanation from me?” His eyes flared as he spoke, heat glinting beneath them as the wolf threatened to force its way to the surface. “My father took you away from me five years ago. We have seen each other three times since then, and one of those ended with me unconscious on the floor because of the cold.”

Her accusation still stung, even though he could not dismiss it outright. He knew he avoided talking about his feelings, especially where Irina was concerned, and he knew Skadi complicated that avoidance further. Irina never hid what she thought or felt. Skadi was no less direct, even if she expressed it differently. Yet the way the words were being thrown at him now made it sound as though he should have anticipated this outcome, as though this confrontation had been inevitable and somehow his fault.

Aerik closed his eyes as Skadi spoke.

A part of him, against his better judgment, found a bitter sort of familiarity in it. Everything she described reminded him of Irina in the desert, back when they hunted the man who had killed her father. That had been the first time he had seen her rage take shape as fire. It was more controlled now, more refined, but the source of it was unmistakable. He might have commented on how far she had come if the circumstances had been different, if she had not been trying to kill Skadi, and if he were not trying to understand how things had reached this point.

He exhaled slowly and pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Why would I mention a lover?” Aerik said quietly. “I do not have one. Rin and I are close. We always have been. At the academy, we were best friends.”

He did not look at Skadi as he spoke. His attention stayed on Irina, even though he suspected the truth of his words might hurt her more than silence would have. Still, they were true.

“Rin stayed here until Prazutis called for her. I slept on the floor. Can you honestly tell me that in the five years we have been apart you have not trained with men, worked beside them, shared quarters with them when circumstances required it, and not thought to explain that to me?”

The questions came out sharper than he meant them to, but he did not retract them. The point remained.

“A lot has happened in five years, Rin. You’ve grown stronger, and you are beautiful now in ways I did not expect, and I do not know what I am supposed to do with that yet. You are not the girl you were, and I am not the boy I was. I do not know what I am supposed to do with that yet. Skadi is my partner and my fellow student. Prazutis has us working together, and you know what that kind of training does to people. We are not thirteen anymore, Rin. It is not fair to expect things to stay frozen where they were.”

He let out another breath and finally glanced at Skadi before returning his gaze to Irina. As the heat in the room faded, he lowered the stone wall between them, the rock settling back into the floor with a dull, heavy sound.

“I am not trying to justify anything,” Aerik said. “I am asking for us not to destroy my apartment in the process of figuring this out.”

He turned and moved toward the door, tension still coiled tight in his chest.

Whether either of them stopped him remained to be seen.

Despite the intensity of the moment, Skadi chose to remain quiet after speaking her mind when she heard the other girl’s voice on the other side of the wall, addressing Aerik as well. The more the moments lingered, the more Skadi truly began to realize that the real issue here was the lack of communication. The problem was compounded by other factors as well…including assumptions.

But one thing was clear - the other girl was hurt. There was history between this Irina and Aerik, and Skadi had unwittingly stepped in the middle of all that. And she had made the mistake of stopping by his apartment instead of her own. She would take responsibility for that - but that was between her and Aerik and it did not need to involve this other girl.

For now, however, other issues would need to be addressed and quickly, before this devolved further.

She wanted to speak up, to try and add clarity to the moment for this other girl - but she bit her tongue as Aerik responded back to Irina, his voice rising a touch despite his attempts to stay calm and level headed. The more he said, the more his words painted a picture for Skadi to see in her mind. There were issues going on between him and Irina - and they needed to figure themselves out.

Before Skadi and Irina killed each other due to a misunderstanding.

Aerik pinched the bridge of his nose and responded to Skadi’s remarks, and she inhaled deeply. Of course, he had no need to mention a lover to her because he didn’t have one. But Irina clearly thought or felt differently. She stayed quiet as he tried to explain the situation to the fuming girl on the other side about Skadi’s presence and why they spent more time “together” than he did with Irina. What he spoke was the truth - as brutal and straightforward as it was. It was up to the other girl to accept his words for what they were, or continue to raise hell. He wanted to figure out the problem, find a solution - but he wanted to do so in a way that didn’t see his living space destroyed.

That was more than fair. Skadi hated that it had even happened in the first place, and it shamed her. So much so that she couldn’t even bring herself to look at her partner and comrade. She suddenly felt very exposed - even though she was partially clothed, and she hugged her arms across her chest in a rather vulnerable display.

The wall lowered, and immediately Skadi felt tension coil in her shoulders and back once more. Her golden eyes flickered towards the other girl, wary and untrusting. She felt that lowering the wall while the hothead was still fuming was a mistake, but she didn’t voice her concerns.

She just wanted this to be done and over with - and for this embarrassment to go away.

After a long moment, Skadi finally decided to speak up, to give truth to the moment even if it further damned her.

Aerik did not invite me in. I helped myself to his living space because his quarters are closer than my own and I just wanted to bathe after my training session. I was going to be in and out before he returned. I was not expecting someone to knock on his door, and I did not want to be rude and keep whoever was waiting in case it was important. I was foolish and left my clean change of clothes in the hall…the only thing I had to wear was one of his shirts. I am very much aware of how all this looks. I am a woman too, you know. Aerik speaks the truth. Clearly you know him - if you will not believe a word I say, then at least trust what he says. I just want to get my chit and leave. You two can work out your own problems as it is none of my business.

It was nice to see that Aerik had been moving on, getting stronger, and becoming more independent. She hadn't expected him to be as such so soon in his training under Prazutis. He seemed to still be wet behind the ears that afternoon she had walked in on his training, still wanting to prove himself — but to whom?

Quinn mused, wondering if that schoolboy crush of his still lingered. A part of her still felt bad for using him. Alas, her efforts only gained her an audience, but it seemed the Jedi she was trying to tempt had eyes or thoughts for another. It was no loss; the woman didn't seem too interested when they spoke, and if anything, Quinn was a curiosity.

Being a curiosity was enough. Quinn had too much on her plate already, with Eshan and her other affairs. Still, since she had not seen Aerik in some time, she decided to hand-deliver the parcel. Living together was something interesting, but once he moved out, bits of the boy seemed to pop up in places she wouldn't have expected.

His shirt was in her study, a sock lingering carefully behind a nightstand, and a pair of pants seemingly finding their way into her wardrobe. Gathering everything had been its own adventure, and she wondered whether Aerik just preferred her room for his studies or whether the maids had confused her closet for his. It was a mystery, but one she could solve easily by just asking the boy.

In one hand, she had his clothing, and in the other, a container of fresh dumpling soup. It was spicy and double meat, just how she had heard him often order it. She wondered if there was a correlation between his lineage and the amount of meat he frequently consumed. She mused over the stereotypes and huffed lightly, trying to get the laughter out before she ran into him.

Everything in the soup was made from scratch and by her own hand. No aid from Prazutis's chefs nor the maids. Quinn carefully made the dumpling wrappers and wrapped each small parcel of meat. As much as she often kept the boy at arm's length, she did have a genuine fondness for him.

He was thoughtful and deep down caring. In battle, he was fierce and left nothing to want — a rarity among their ranks and one that she wished to foster into a partnership… though possibly one that he didn't find as favorable as the one he probably desired.

That was another conversation they would eventually have to have. Either way, Quinn was happy to acknowledge his growth and congratulate him.

Carefully, Quinn walked up the steps towards his apartment. Drawing closer, she slowed — hearing voices, one distinctively Aerik's, the other two belonged to women. Quinn stopped and quirked a brow as she fought back a laugh. She wondered if he had been caught entertaining more than one woman.

That dog… good for him.

She thought quietly. She had never seen Aerik show any interest in any of his classmates. The boy often seemed distracted by training or his eyes on someone else… which Quinn had quickly figured out was her. She continued towards his door; the bickering and the attempt to settle it echoed.

Quinn rolled her eyes. Aerik was an idiot, but he was young and seemed to need the help. She was his teacher after all. She continued, only stopping when she got near the door and knocked quietly.

"Hello~" She smiled. “Hope I’m not interrupting anything,” The trio would easily recognize her as a professor from the academy, as well as Srina's daughter and the Heir Apparent to the Empire's coveted throne.

Oh, and a Dark Councilor.

"It's nice to see the three of you getting along." Quinn continued to smile as she held the parcel of wrapped clothing. "It seems you left your laundry in my wardrobe… again." She tilted her head, knowing that how she worded it made it sound far worse than it actually was.

"Should be the last time, since we aren't living together anymore," Quinn smiled and then offered the soup.

"Atrisian wonton soup, spicy and with double the meat, just how you like it."

Once she handed everything over, she placed her hands behind her back and glanced at the other women. "Quite lively here, isn't it? How is everyone?"

Of course he didn't know she was coming, it was supposed to be a surprise, a chance to reclaim the night that was stolen by the cold that had nearly killed him. She bristled when his eyes flared, recognising the wolf within, seeing his anger rise in a way she'd not seen before, certainly not towards her.

And then he answered Skadi and it felt like he'd taken the blade that she'd brought for him and drove it into her chest with each word. No, they were not lovers. It wasn't an untrue statement, but he knew how she felt, she had made it abundantly clear on Jutrand, and when she'd thought he wasn't interested and tried to pull away he had stopped her. And now she was stuck, stuck in this limbo of not truly knowing what he wanted and desperately trying to seize every moment she could with him.

She swallowed against the lump that formed in her throat, blinked against the tears that threatened to blur her vision, determined to maintain what little control she had left. "I have never shared my personal quarters with a man, Aerik. Barracks are not the same and you know it." Her answers reflected the sharpness with which he'd delivered the questions.

Then he called her beautiful and it did nothing but muddy the waters further. Skadi was easy, their relationship was simple. Co-apprentices brought together by their training, but Irina? Irina was complicated, wrought with changes he clearly wasn't ready for. He wall lowered and Irina's gaze fell on Skadi, shifting to the burn on her arm and felt the shame rise. She had not deserved her rage, she had just been the best placed outlet, for her fire could never touch him. The heat that had come from her in waves dissipated as he moved for the door. Irina shot forward, her hand closing about his wrist to stop him from leaving.

"Don't walk away." The words were choked, alien to her own ears. If he left now, they would never figure this out. Her eyes were pulled back to Skadi as she spoke, explaining her story and Irina's mouth opened, intending to suggest she get some bacta on that burn before it scarred when there was a soft knock on the door, followed by a voice that made Irina's stomach bottom out.

Quinn fething Varanin? Here?

She let go of Aerik's wrist and stepped back, everything she felt faded from her face, slipping quickly and cleanly behind a mask she had mastered long before Gerwald had taken her as his apprentice. Of all the opportunities she could have to meet the Heir Apparent, this was absolutely not the one she wanted.

Chit.

Her hands folded neatly behind her back and she bowed her head. "Councillor Varanin." she greeted in a low murmur. Her eyes moved slowly between her, the bundle of clothes, the soup and then settled on Aerik, her jaw tightening and she clenched her teeth.

How many women had he lived with?

Aerik rolled his eyes at Irina’s rebuttal. They both knew barracks were not the same thing, and they both knew the accusation was not fair. There were years of her life he knew nothing about, just as there were years of his she had not witnessed, and neither of them could undo that distance now. His words may have been technically true, but he could hear how cold they sounded even as he spoke them, especially in the face of how plainly her feelings showed. Still, lying would not make this better. If anything, it would only make the ground less stable beneath them. The facts needed to be on the table, even if they cut.

He was confused, though not in the way she seemed to think. Aerik knew what he felt, and he knew what he wanted on a purely human level. He was no less hot-blooded than anyone else his age. Desire was not the problem. The problem was that Irina had always been the one person he could speak to without guarding every word. What they shared in the maze at the academy had been real, something formed outside lineage, title, or expectation. That mattered to him more than he had ever said out loud, and he refused to gamble that bond away without understanding the cost.

Her absence over the last several years had only complicated that truth. In some ways, he had already mourned her. When they met again after so long, it had felt effortless, as though the years had folded in on themselves, and yet the ache of what had been lost never quite loosened its grip. Skadi was not wrong. There was history there, and no amount of argument would resolve it with all of them standing in the same room. What unsettled him was that Irina’s words left little room for how this had affected him at all. Everything burned outward from her, hot and immediate, without pause.

He wondered, briefly, whether it was selfish to wish she would slow down long enough to see him clearly.

She had known the boy he was. He was not sure she knew the man he was becoming.

Her grip closed around his wrist and stopped him before he could step away. His gaze moved between Irina and Skadi, tracking the shift in the room as the heat receded and Irina extinguished her own flame. The silence that followed felt heavier than the fire had.

“Don’t walk away.”

What complicated it further was that his partnership with Skadi had never felt forced or deliberate. It had formed naturally through shared training, mutual trust, and the quiet understanding that came from being shaped by the same demands. He was aware of her presence in a way that was steady rather than consuming, drawn to her strength and the confidence with which she occupied space. She was equally alluring, though in a different register than Irina, less bound to memory and more rooted in the present. Aerik did not mistake that awareness for certainty. He had not chosen anything, nor was he ready to. He only knew that what existed with Skadi was real in its own right, and that pretending otherwise would be another kind of dishonesty.

Aerik exhaled and forced himself to settle. He turned back toward Irina, found his balance, and opened his mouth to respond.

The knock on the door cut him off.

Quinn Varanin’s voice followed immediately after, calm and unmistakable. Aerik’s shoulders tightened. The day had found yet another way to worsen. When the door opened, the Echani woman stood there holding a hamper of his clothes that had somehow been left at her quarters, along with a container of homemade soup. He registered, distantly, that it was portioned for more than one person. The words left his mouth before his judgment caught up with them.

“Fokkðu mér!”

Quinn complicated things in a quieter way. His interest in her had grown over time, shaped less by moments than by proximity and admiration, and he was aware now that it had likely never been returned in the way he once hoped. She carried herself with an ease and authority that drew his attention without effort, and for a time he had mistaken that gravity for something more personal. Lately, he had begun to recognize the difference. There was no bitterness in that realization, only adjustment. Whatever place he occupied in her regard, it was not the one he had imagined, and he was learning to accept that without resentment. Attraction did not entitle him to reciprocity, and understanding that felt like another step away from the boy he had been and toward someone more measured, even if the awareness lingered longer than he would have preferred.

His eyes swept the room again. The damage was obvious. Irina had already snapped to attention and greeted Quinn, composed as ever. Whether Skadi shared that familiarity was something Aerik could not know. All he understood was that both women present had reason to read far more into this visit than he was prepared to explain. This was not simply a visit from a teacher, and no one in the room would pretend it was.

“Quinn…” he started, then winced, that was a mistake.

“Councilor Varanin. This is unexpected. Sorry about the clothes. I think the palace staff sometimes forget that Lord Prazutis finally granted me my own quarters.”

His eyes flicked briefly to Skadi before returning to Quinn.

“I believe you may have already met Skadi Lightbane. She is another apprentice of Darth Prazutis,” Aerik said, then turned slightly. “This is Irina Jesart. She was with me at the academy for a time and now serves as an apprentice to the Dread Wolf.”

He did not say what all of them already knew.

Gerwald Lechner was his father.

Aerik accepted the soup with a small, weary nod.

“Thank you, I do not think I will be cooking in here for a few days.”

Irina snapped back at Aerik - and when he moved to walk away, she grabbed his wrist to stop him from leaving. Skadi did nothing except stand there and observe the two of them, her mind a-swirl with thoughts, though she tried not to let them wrestle control over her emotions. It would be better for her to look into this issue with a clear mind, but that was easier said than done.

Aerik glanced between the two women that occupied his space, and Skadi noticed the heat slowly dissipate from the other girl. It appeared that her attempts to kill Skadi would not continue, and for that the Valkyri was thankful. Dying at her age didn’t sound like much fun, really.

Just when things seemed to be smoothing over, at least somewhat, a knock at the door interrupted the delicate moment - and to make matters worse, another woman appeared on the other side. A rather beautiful woman at that; white blond hair, porcelain skin and hazel eyes. Skadi recognized her after a heartbeat or two - this…was Lady Varanin. Heir Apparent, Dark Councilor, and Queen of Eshan.

What in the hells was she doing here??

Clearly Aerik hadn’t been expecting her either - if his curse was anything to go by. Skadi understood his words almost perfectly, though it was not spoken in Basic. It seemed his mother tongue and her own were very similar.

Skadi noticed the reactions that both Irina and Aerik gave to the pale haired woman, and the young Valkyri felt her face flame a deeper shade of crimson as she realized she was standing there in just Aerik’s longer shirt - in front of royalty. How embarrassing. At least her hair was mostly dry by this point - if a little frizzly thanks to Irina’s fire. She pulled herself up a little straighter and dipped her chin towards the other woman in respect, watching the next few scenes unfold with both curiosity and smidge of irritation.

This was not how she had foreseen the rest of her day turning out.

Lady Varanin’s voice cut through the lingering tension - which was suddenly back on the rise - and Skadi wanted to glare at the other woman with her choice of words and the smile that formed on her face. Getting along? Yeah they were totally getting along, just splendidly.

The Dark Councilor turned her attention to Aerik, and handed him some items. Clothes, which just so happened to be left in her wardrobe?? Again?? Skadi’s eyes narrowed a smidge further as the Eshani woman tilted her head - she knew exactly what she was saying, and what she was doing in the moment. Skadi had the sudden desire to tell her to get the feth out and mind her own damn business - but she knew such a reaction would be unwise.

The Heir Apparent continued, and suggested that she and Aerik had lived together in the past too. Clearly, there was a lot more to Aerik, son of Gerwald, than Skadi realized. He had quite the history - one she was growing more and more curious about. But things were very delicate now and if she wanted to have any chance in the future of wooing him - she would need to tread carefully.

She made a mental note of the soup that Lady Varanin had brought for Aerik;
wait a moment…didn’t Aerik say he liked his meat almost raw? You are quite the mystery, young warrior. A mystery I am determined to unravel.

Skadi risked a glance over at Irina, and saw her jaw was tight. The arrival of this woman, and her statements, did not sit well with her. Aerik took the chance to speak up then, apologizing for the clothes - or trying to find a way to worm his way out of his current mess. She did not miss the way his gaze flickered towards her own, when he mentioned once again that their shared Master had given him his own quarters. Skadi met his gaze very briefly, though her expression was mostly unreadable at the moment.

No doubt, there would be a conversation between them after this mess blew over.

He took the next moment to introduce both Skadi and Irina to Councilor Varanin, then dropped a bit of information that Skadi took note of: Irina was the apprentice to Aerik’s father.
How interesting. He accepted the clothes, and the soup and once everything was handed over to Aerik, the Echani woman pulled her hands behind her back and addressed the three of them, pointing out how lively it was currently and inquired how everyone was.

Oh, just wonderful, milady.” Skadi responded after a moment of silence, hoping that her voice was devoid of any tension or emotion, though she feared a smidge of her irritation might have slipped through her accent. She smiled at the Echani, neither kind nor hostile - just in the way her Mother had taught her when entertaining important guests. “And yes - we were having quite the lively interaction. I daresay, it was rather eye opening.
