Intent: A personal weapon for Ali Hadrix.

Development Thread: (The main way people work for their toys, though most submissions don't require a development thread. Restricted items require specific development threads. Substantial development threads can help judges approve more powerful submissions. If in doubt, put 'If necessary,' and a judge may or may not ask you for one. Special Features:

The Verpine Assault Rifle is a magazine-fed, gravity-coil operated, multi-calibre, multi-bore small arms rifle. Compact and greatly adaptable, the weapon is capable of similar ranges to that of the sniper rifle variant, though at reduced weight.

Optical Equipment: The rifle is equipped with several pieces of optical equipment, the first being a long range scope capable of detecting targets 4,ooo meters/4.o km away, and is capable of utilizing the sonar, UV, radiation, broad-spectrum, and IR wavelengths. The scope's data can be relayed to an operator's HUD if one is available, for maximized effectiveness and coordination of target acquisition and tracking.

Rail Velocity Tuner: This optic is also equipped with a velocity-adjustment system that calculates range, elevation and windspeed, and manipulates the power settings of the gravity coil system to adjust the velocity of the fired projectiles in real time before firing. Safety measures integrated into the system allow adjustments to be made only between firing cycles, avoiding malfunctions and damage to the weapon. Using this system allows the operator to fire each round at optimum power level according to the current conditions of the target. This system can be disabled at the discretion of the operator, though it lacks a manual adjustor.

Extraneous Optical Equipment: The rifle is equipped with a standard flat-screened, red-dot optic for close-quarters reflexive fire. Installed on the operator's dominant-eye side of the weapon, these old-fashioned optics allow for quick draw and target acquisition in close-quarters engagements. Laser sights can also be installed via the weapon's adaptive rail system.

Selective fire: The rifle is equipped with three firing modes: Burst, Paired, and Single fire. The Burst function fires three projectiles with each pull of the trigger, Paired, two, and Single fire, one.

Adjustable/folding stock: The weapon's stock is capable of folding to the operator's side of the weapon to allow for easy storage or close-quarters handling, and can also be adjusted by length to provide a more comfortable and accurate firing position for its operator. The stock is comprised of adjustable panels that can provide a variety of cheek-rest heights for the user during stabilized firing.

Bi-pod System: Beneath the weapon's barrel, forward of the lower receiver, is a bi-pod system that folds into the fore-grip of the weapon, allowing for quick storage that does not hamper the operator's use of the weapon when mobile. The bi-pod legs adjust in length to provide better stability and accuracy. The feet end in rounded pads (for stability on slick surfaces such as ice and metal) and surrounded by short metal points that dig into terrain (such as soil, mud and sand).

Under-barrel Attachments: The barrel and lower receiver are designed to equip an assortment of under-barrel weapons and equipment, including grenade launchers.

EMP Hardening: The rifle features a protective jacket separating the firing systems from the receiver. The inner space between has been filled with materials that protect the interior workings against electro-magnetic interference or harm. A thin protective layer of EMP-resistant material over the receiver serves as the first line of defense against interference from radiation.

Miscellaneous: To counter the extreme sensitivity of the original Verpine design, shock-absorbant compounds have been made an integral part of the weapon's stock and receiver. Similarly structured supports have been introduced to the weapon's interior mechanisms, providing greater resilience against physical damage. The isolation of the firing system serves the dual purpose of protecting the sensitive hardware from physical harm. The firing mechanisms have been redesigned, producing a more durable weapon, though at the sacrifice of much of the range boasted by its Sniper parent.

Description:

Strengths: The weapon is highly modular, light weight, and packs great power and range coupled with high capacity and variable fire rate. The weapon is highly effective against personal armor, and out-matches most small arms weapons for range, capacity, and overall power, though it's durability remains a minor issue. The rifle's greatest strength is against Force Users, as its projectiles are nearly impossible to dodge or deflect by all but the most experienced of Jedi and Sith Knights and Masters.

Weaknesses: The weapon's shorter barrel length reduces the number of gravity coils available to propel each round, leading to a greatly decreased range from the Sniper variant of the technology. The attachment of excess equipment can alter the weight and balance of the weapon, making an unprepared user less accurate and adaptable in the battlefield. All modifications should be tested before taken to operation in the field.
The weapon's durability is indeed strengthened by alternative design, though as with any optical system can be knocked out of calibration by the most jarring of impacts. This is offset only by the inclusion of more rudimentary optical systems, such as iron sights, that sacrifice range to resupply accuracy.

History of the Weapon: Verpine technology has long been admired by the warriors of Mandalore. Their legendary range, power and variability even as a specialist weapon have made the brand a long-standing favorite of Mando'ade hunters and soldiers. Ali's mother, Myra, recognized the need for a Verpine weapon more adapted to the use of infantry soldiers after her first call to war, and thus the design of the Verpine Assault Rifle was born. By the time Myra Hadrix was called to duty a second time, she had completed the weapon, and took it with her. It was a grand success in the battlefield, and Myra eventually handed the weapon over to Ali as she left to join the Galactic Republic Military. The weapon is a Hadrix-family heirloom, and is Ali's most valuable personal treasure.

Side Notes: I may replace the image used for the basic weapon idea at a later time. This was the best one I could find at the moment. I may try to find an artist to generate a design based on the description of the weapon.

That's supposed to be 45 rounds per minute, the same as an M4 Carbine on semi-auto (single-shot) fire. I'll edit it.
Though the action on this weapon will be much faster than that of a powder-cartridge round, as there is no case to extract after unlocking the chamber, so I think I'll up it to 65 rpm.
I reduced the fire rates for burst and paired fire; those felt too high.
