Description:
The second missile type to come off the assembly line at the TDI factory was the V-99 Bás Bán, an air-to-air missile that could only be used in the atmosphere of planets and not fired in orbit or from the orbit. Similar to their previous missile, the V-44, it too had a built-in switch to prevent the missile from being fired in orbit. The warhead it self contained highly ionized particles, directed at either destroying or disrupting electronics in other aircrafts; potentially weakening their electrical systems, and potentially crippling the fighter and leaving it vulnerable to other attacks. The missile was effective against fast moving ships and was not designed to be used against structures or ground based vehicles.
When fired from a starfighter, it's active-radar homing system kicks in to track it's target. The missile itself only has a maximum range of five (5) kilometers. If the target manages to move outside the range of the missile, the active-radar homing system is deactivated and the self-destruct sequence kicks in. When the self-destruct system is turned on, a window of fifteen (15) seconds occurs before it explodes; and any fighters, friend or foe, caught in the three (3) meter blast radius is subjected to the ion particles.
The ion particles themselves then last twenty (20) seconds before dissipating. However, once the self-destruct sequence begins, and the target moves back into the five (5) kilometer range; the self-destruct sequence overrides the homing system, essentially meaning the missile cannot re-lock on to the target.
The missile contained a sensor jammer package, which was effective only when it locked onto a target. The jammer could only disrupt capabilities like chaff countermeasures or auto-tracking targeting computers. However, despite the maximum range for the missile being only five (5) kilometers, the sensor jamming system was only effective within three (3) kilometers of it's intended target.
The missile could be mounted on gunships, atmospheric bombers, and atmospheric starfighters. Due to the size of the size and weight of the missile, coupled with with the highly charged ion particles, no more than three missiles could be mounted at any given time.
