Up to Speed

At last the flight had come to an end, the old ship had finally come out of Hyperspace. After a jump from Mugg Fallow, the vessel had succeeded in remaining intact. For that Vigilant was most pleased. The Derriphan battleship for all intents and purposes should not have been flying at all. Its condition was deplorable and without help from another person it would never have seen the light of hyperspace.

Now that he was away from that world, Vigilant could focus his efforts on repairing more of the ship. So far only the bridge and the engine deck were functioning. The Hangar was still powered down and not completely sealed. Fortunately he had gotten the relativistic shields running as well. He didn't want to end up sometime in the future after just one jump. He wanted to finish getting the Hangar level sealed and powered up so that he could accept other people later, and so that he could leave the ship.

He walked out of the bridge, the turbolift was functioning, which saved him from having to jump down holes in the ship or any of that sort of madness. He strode slowly to the lift and took it to the engine level. The first thing he wanted to do was to check the engines and make sure they were holding. The antiquity of these did not lend themselves to confidence. He wanted to ensure their safety before continuing his repairs.

He realized as he began looking them over that he had no idea where he was. The computers on the ship were so outdated that there was no information on the surrounding space.

The process took the better part of an hour to complete, but once Vigilant was certain of the generator's stability he closed the last hatch. With that done he could turn his attention to working on the hangar level. The droid smiled as he pulled the doors to the engine room closed behind him, the power was not enough to waste its use on something so menial as doors. He could just as easily open and close them manually and lock them to avoid the danger of pressure loss. Not that that was a big concern to him, there was no atmosphere on the ship yet and therefore nothing would happen if a massive hole were to be left in the structure.

As he climbed down the durasteel cord between the decks, Vigilant thought about the future. He knew this was all part of a greater plan. His master's plan. He would use this vessel to complete his own objective and from there to... well he was not so certain. He could not think that far ahead. He had to finish the current mission before he could move onto his own life. He did not know what he wanted to do for himself, all he knew was that he had to complete the mission that he had been programmed o complete. His programming was his life, there was no way around that.

He finally hit the level that he was looking for. The turbolift was somewhere farther down in the ship, had probably stopped there when the power had cut out. Thus when he and another man had first come aboard trying to get to the bridge, they had set up a basic rope with which they could climb between levels. He pulled himself towards the door and opened it. Letting go of the cord he slid into the hangar level and turned to close the door again. Now time to see about those holes.

It was soon evident that the task in mind would be a monumental accomplishment. The droid had hardly noticed all the holes and punctures in the metal walls before. He had been too focused on getting the ship running to actually pay attention to the damage to the hull. Now that the ship was functioning, somewhat, he realized the amount of damage that it had sustained. Because of this, he had not had a real idea of what would be needed to fulfill the repairs. It would be awhile before this vessel was ready to handle visitors. He was driven on by the fact that this vessel would one day be capable of fighting the evil that was his brother.

Vigilant walked to a locker where he found the repair equipment, just as the main computer had indicated when he had first come aboard. There was quite a bit of metal sheets to be used as temporary fixes, which was a good thing given the current condition of the craft. Perhaps the ship had been built with weak shields and the occupants had decided to keep a larger supply of hull repairs for that specific purpose. It was a theory, something to keep his mind occupied while he worked.

He began with the largest holes, the ones that would take the most metal and time to cover. He decided to play some music while he worked. It would pass the time and keep his mind occupied. He looked through his databanks and began picking out random musical pieces that he had heard over the past year. He found himself attracted to more classical forms of music rather than the newer synthesized music. With that playing in his mind, he began welding the metal plates to the hull.
