Production: Mass-Production

MATERIAL(S) / SPECIAL COMPONENTS:
SPECIAL FEATURES:
  • Redundant security locks prevent tampering and also keeps portions of the artificial gravity system from being pitted against each other, endangering crew. Locks also prevent crew from being asphyxiated by atmospheric subsystems.
STRENGTHS:
  • Can be sized and configured to fit into any ship from 20m and larger using miniaturization technology and scaling up to proportionate level to ship size, class, and configuration.
  • Can configure environments within select interior spaces to meet specific atmospheric, gravitational, temperature, and chemical requirements for passengers or cargo.
WEAKNESSES:
  • Cannot be scaled to fit ships below 20m in length, making it unsuitable for most types of starfighters.
  • Cannot create environments for all species, as certain lifeforms' requirements go beyond the atmospheric, gravitational, and chemical capabilities of this system. For example, certain lifeforms may require atmospheric mixtures of dense amounts of exotic types of chemicals, and due to the rarity in which these might be required they were omitted from the design. This particularly affects Morseerians who require a methane-rich environment, and due to the amount of methane required to fill an entire bay or compartment (as well as the inherent risks, e.g. flammability), such an option is not available for them. Ammonia, required by the Gand is another such chemical omitted from the design for similar reasons. Another is Dorin Gas, unique to the homeworld of the Kel Dor species, which made its inclusion both excessive and illogical as its need applies only to this particular species.
  • If a starship is carrying more lifeforms than generally allotted - as in the case of emergency evacuations where more beings than usual may temporarily be aboard - power draw is significantly increased during the periods and may affect or require that non-essential systems be temporarily shut down or their settings lowered to divert necessary power to accommodate them.
DESCRIPTION
The Ukko system is built around a two-fold premise: First, that life support systems need to be neither space-consuming or overly restrictive in terms of sustainability, and second, that not every species requires the same environmental conditions in which to survive. The Ukko was designed to be scalable to fit aboard most ship sizes, types, and configurations beyond 20m. Thus, while not suited for most starfighter designs, it may still be fitted to everything from small transport craft and shuttles to super star destroyers. Its systems are also largely sustainable, with recycling of onboard air and water and other miniaturization technologies meant to make the Ukko much less impacting on limited space aboard starships, allowing room for other systems or features to be included into configurations. The Ukko is not intrusive, space-consuming, and able to be included after-market with relative ease onto a variety of starship types. Further, due to the nature of its design it (generally) doesn’t require much of a power draw, however if intense gravity extremes are needed or if the ship is carrying beyond its customary capacity as in the case of an emergency evacuation scenario, power draw is much higher and cannot be sustained indefinitely.

In most conventional starships, life support is largely generalized, allowing for atmospheric, gravitational, temperature, and chemical requirements for similar species. A crew of Humans, Twi’leks, and Sullustans for example, share such similar requirements that no specialized subsystems are needed. However, for other species, those needs may be vastly different. To compensate for this, the Ukko was designed to allow users the ability to designate selected areas of a ship to operate with variable environmental profiles, making it possible for vastly different species with equally different requirements to comfortably travel aboard the same ship. Of course, certain requirements still proved excessive, such as highly specialized atmospheric mixtures needed by species such as the Morseerians, Gand, and Kel Dor, due to the exotic nature of certain chemicals required and the inherent rarity or hazards involved in their utilization. However, the Ukko allows for still plenty of adjustability to permit most species or cargo types to be safely and comfortably carried aboard.
