The Type 96 AUL is the 96th craft to be accepted by the Miln Astrogational Corps in the role of Aerospace, Utility, Light. A small, single-seat dropship, the Type 96 is capable of ferrying its pilot and up to 3 tons of cargo to and from the surface of a standard gravity planet. Said cargo is transported in an optional aerodynamic pod which is attached to the top of the Type 96's fuselage; common practice is for cargo flights to be un-crewed, with the small ship's flight handled entirely by its sophisticated autopilot. When landing, the craft typically comes in at a dead glide, excellent stability being afforded by its long, straight wings, which can be folded for storage and contain large fuel tanks.
The Type 96 can land on short, unprepared strips, anything from grass to gravel. Capable of single stage to space performance, the small craft can only achieve low orbit when taking off directly from the ground, and must quickly be recovered by its mother-ship; the flight will consume 90% of the Type 96's fuel, meaning that there is likely no possibility of a second attempt.
When not transporting crew or cargo, the Type 96 can be used as an orbital and atmospheric survey craft, equipped with a comprehensive sensor package.
Overall, the Type 96 AUL is an excellent addition to the equipment of any Miln scout vessel. Ships such as the Type 99 SHI often carry up to four.
