Crakull

Hidden beyond the veil of the Unknown Regions; this world has been hidden from most records...

The Primeval; with outdated information were amongst the few lucky ones to know of its existence. Even still, Crakull is home to many secrets amongst them are the Croke. A race that few know of and even fewer have met. Said to be the greatest conjurers in the galaxy, the Croke are most famous for their magical prowess.

"Is this wise, Your Worship?", the face of the speaker was hidden by the shadow cast in Anja's personal quarters aboard Order's End. "I choose who I teach.", she said softly. The man who spoke earlier walked out of the corner and stepped into the soft light. "Of course but why teach them?", he referred to the fact they were little more than strangers. Whispers of a powerful Witch have spread throughout the fringes, referring to Anja. It was how she ended up being contacted by the Empress of Effekt only a few months ago.

"There's potential in the unknown. I seek to learn just as much as they do.", Anja walked over to the viewport above the world of Crakull. With her shuttle ready she would soon descend to meet her two latest students.

Juniper had yet to see the planet she was on, she had been picked up and transported here in a cage and let out only recently. They had told her something about a great honor and then something about having to prove her worth. It was all quite confusing, she had been in limbo the entire way here, caught between being asleep and awake, eating just enough to survive, and living in her own self pity. This was quite the confusing time for the woman. It was quite unsettling to be in the situation but at the same time rang with a sense of absolution, like her gut was saying she was in the right place for whatever reason.

The nearly six foot tall prisoner stood in the meeting room still clad in what she was wearing when they caught her nearing a week prior. She had no restraints or guns pointed at her. Since her transport here, her snow white mane had become less voluptuous and her skin appeared oily and unwashed. Juniper figured whoever had her captured had a plan for her already and no matter what it was she would be facing it soon enough. They hadn’t shown her any unkindness since her entrapment. She maintained it was safer to play along for now. See what they were planning.

The guard said something about another woman on her way. Could it be another prisoner? Or perhaps it was the one behind all of this. Either way, Juniper had no choice but to wait.

There were backwater planets, and then there were backwater planets. Maja hadn’t even heard of this one and galactic records weren’t much help either. It seems someone very famous knew someone less famous and he’d visited the place once. Long before either of them had ever been heard of. Not exactly a glowing reference.

So she headed into the Unknown Regions to the Crakull system on what might be no more than a whim. Her efforts to contact the Witches of Dathomir and the Nightsisters came to nothing – despite her dreams. But she had refused to accept she was wrong – not exactly for the first time – and so had reviewed and reanalysed what she’d remembered from those nights on Kashyyk. Where she’d encountered the Sayormi and their queen. She touched her face where the tattoo had emerged having been subjected to their ancient voodoo magic. It had faded over the following days but to Maja, it still felt it was there – waiting to emerge when the time was right.

And back in her apartment, spending days that spread into weeks waiting for her sister to show, she’d done the only thing possible. Research and dreaming. The more she looked into witch magic the more she felt a connection to a person. Each morning she awoke and scribbled down notes from her dreams. Finally these fragments were sufficient to give her an image and a place. And research gave her a name. [member="Anja Aj'Rou"].

So, coordinates in hand, she’d rented a shuttle and headed to this remote planet in hope rather than expectation of finding answers. As she docked, she put on one of the glistaweb dresses her sister gave her and headed into the hangar and was escorted to a room where she saw a tall woman, her head mostly shaved but sporting a dishevelled looking white mohican. This was definitely not Anja.

As ever, her mouth opened before her brain had time to engage. “Who are you and where is she?” Her tone was petulant. The girl who once had nothing was now as spoiled as a queen’s lap-dog – and no better behaved.

Juniper’s face was struck with desperation. High cheekbones and a strong jawline, once considered beautiful, had become much more prominent making her look very gaunt. Smears of makeup were still visible in a shallow attempt to maintain her narcissism and keep a tether of her stolen pride. Her usually icy blue stare was instead a farewell call from a spring dove lost and unable to find her way home moments before dark. If the glacial mask she called her personality had melted for a moment it would look the same but facial expressions were far easier to hide than the hunger in her eyes. This was the first time she had been captured in her years on the run; hopefully she’d find a way to get out of here alive.

She heard the hustle getting closer to the room. It was time to get back into survival mode. She could not allow herself to show weakness to this woman. It wasn’t much longer until the shimmering princess walked through the door. She hadn’t announced herself as a princess yet and even if she wasn’t physically a princess she still radiated pretense and more so a rich perfume. Either that or it was Juniper’s natural reaction to smell something covering people’s bullpoodoo. It didn’t take Juniper too long before she came to the conclusion whoever this woman was she had been treated much better than the wayward prisoner. Was she the one that captured Juniper? Or was she here under strange circumstances too?

It was clear after she barked orders, however, that she had no idea who Juniper was. If she did she would have known that asking an already broken and beaten woman was like cornering a rat. “Who am I?” She slammed her fist on the table. “Who are you?! I have been taken against my will and will not be ordered around like this.” Anger replaced fear and her pupils dilated with rage. “You look like you know what the frack you’re doing here, why don’t you tell me where ‘she’ is.” She used air quotes to emphasize her pointed sarcasm. Juniper was usually much more calm under stress but she was not one to bow down to anyone calling themselves in charge.

Maja considered the woman in front of her. A matter of weeks ago she could have been that person – an outcast, a fugitive, a member of the underclass. Perpetually starving and never truly clean.

And she appeared defiant too. Perhaps that was a trait of those that had nothing? Some capitulated and others fought back. Maja refused to give in and the fire in this woman’s eyes suggested a kindred spirit. But she immediately dismissed such thoughts as sentimental rubbish. She was here to learn. She was here for herself. She was here to prove she was worthy.

“Listen sister,” Maja’s jaw was defiant now, and vestige of kinship gone as soon as the woman started to issue demands. “I’m as much in the dark as you. Now back off before I hurt you.” Maja winced internally as soon as she said that. Firstly she was in no real position to hurt anyone – unless harsh words counted. And secondly it was a cliché used by those that couldn’t hurt you. But the woman did look like she’d been dragged through bantha poodoo...backwards...twice - and freely admitted she was, if anything, slightly in a worse position than Maja.

“I suggest we wait. Whoever wanted our company is bound to be along soon. Right?” The final word was said as much with hope as it was certainty.

Entering from the far side of the room was an entourage of Guland -- dark-side corrupted Sephi -- and following their path was a woman; clearly of the Umbaran race to those who knew them. Pale milky eyes, paler in complexion, and giving off a rather mysterious aura. The only thing that made her different was the fact unlike most of her race she did not shave her head. Was it an act of cultural defiance? Who knew. Perhaps she just broke out of old traditions.

Looking over to the two girls, her eyes wandered up and down but not at them, it would feel like she was perceiving something that was unseen. "Names?", she asked rather simplistically. She was clad in a light armour that exposed most of her arms and legs, it was clearly meant to compliment agility at the sacrifice of defense.

The Gulandi hugged the walls of the room without a word, only the quiet hums of breathing through their masks could be heard.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

Juniper laughed at her threats. Having been spending spent most of her adult life in the rustle and bustle of the galaxy, she knew it was never as easy as a threat if you were really going to shut someone up. If she were going to harm the captive she would have never announced she had the power to do it, she would simply do it. This wasn’t reassuring to the prisoner however, because that meant whoever did have enough power to hurt her was still on their way.

She decided not to go any farther than her laughter with the blonde, instead focusing her energy on preparing for whoever was truly behind whatever it was that was happening. It wouldn’t be much longer until her questions were answered. In strode the first wave of goons, likely to show how important the next to enter was to whomever was entering the room. The next to enter the room was the one Juniper assumed as in charge. The third woman held herself well, standing tall and commanding attention even with her casual tone.

An already fired up Juniper decided to go first, whoever this was had enough interest in them to learn their names which boded well for them. “Juniper Le Fey.” She wasn’t about to back down yet though. “I have a few questions for you…”

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Anja Aj'Rou"]

Maja heard the entourage approaching and stiffened, the woman with her’s laughter dying away as the footsteps grew louder. Maja’s eyes narrowed at the scruffy woman who had gone from likely adversary to potential ally as they awaited the new arrivals.

The woman she’d come to see was evidently some sort of warrior to Maja’s eyes. There was a confidence and a special aura about her. But her companions confused the Vahla. Why would someone so powerful travel with what appeared to be bodyguards? But these thoughts would have to be revisited later because ‘Juniper’ spoke first. And she said what Maja wanted to. Not wishing to appear weak, Maja didn’t try to compete with the white-haired woman. Let her ask the questions whilst Maja evaluated the situation, the dynamics and most importantly, how far their host could be pushed.

But she responded to the question none the less in clipped tones. “Maja.” No more and no less. And she kept her face impassive, despite the frustration that was building inside.

[member="Juniper Le Fey"] | [member="Anja Aj'Rou"]

The Host Lord was a it surprised at Juniper's attitude. Not upset, I guess it's supected; many questions -- too many thoughts.

"Questions can wait.", she replied and then nodded at Maja for giving her name -- nothing but her name. Sith were unpredictable. Some preferred the outspoken whilst others the simplistically obedient but Anja Aj'Rou was neither because she wasn't Sith. She chose her apprentices based on two principals. Self-worth and ambition and because of this she didn't train in the usual relationship; it was more or less a contractual agreement that rarely developed into something personal. If anyone could make it personal they would be unique amongst the others.

Her eyes sized them up once more, "I will teach you. Both of you, I find that you were are worth my time. Leave any misconceptions about security and pride behind; for you will have to give into your own powers if you wish to grow them.", she stated and paused.

Looking to her men she insisted on demonstrating. "A little test.", she pointed to one of the Gulandi. They didn't react to her finger, quite disciplined. "Show me what you perceive. Not with your eyes or ears, what do you sense?", she asked.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

Though she could be headstrong at times, Juniper was not a stupid girl. She didn’t want to question whatever it was this woman was here for. If there was a chance that it meant getting out of here alive, the freelancer would do whatever it took. She shifted her anxious feet, channeling her inner anxiety and trying to root herself in the moment and in the durasteel ground beneath her boot. It would be imperative that she focused in the coming moments. If questions were saved after it meant something was about to happen.

There was another grumble inside Juniper’s stomach, not audible, but more like a pulling sensation. The aura of power Juniper’s summoner had, it felt familiar. It was the same heat that kept Juniper warm as a child, the milky static that lulled a baby girl without a mother to sleep every night. This power was the same power that acted as a surrogate to the orphan all her childhood. Whatever this woman was, and whatever she stood for, she had the same overwhelming aura that radiated from Juniper’s caretaker as a child, Zazmine.

The next part of what the mysterious woman said was even more confusing. Training? What kind of training would Juniper need? She was a good shot and could knock the spit out of a Zabrak if he tried anything. If this was somehow connected to her aunt, did that mean that she was scared for Juniper? Had the drifter finally found an unescapable enemy that warranted training? It was hard to believe you would ever need any other skills than those in life. Sure there were the Jedi and Sith with their special powers, and those would be handy to her, but she had no time for moral obligations like that.

Though the mention of power did spark a flame in her wonderstruck eyes. Normally small pupils from poor sleep dilated for a moment; if anyone were paying attention it would note her sudden fascination. A curious young Juniper had walked in on her aunt doing things the girl couldn’t explain, weird books filled with words even well teenage Juniper couldn’t read yet Zazmine would keep them in her room lining her shelves. Was this the power she referred to? Were these powers like Jedi powers? Perhaps this feeling of fate wasn’t ill warranted like it usually was. Maybe now some of the questions of the orphan’s life would be answered.

Restless fingers found their way to the tattoo of Itan, she rubbed him softly, the curled up Krayt dragon always brought a sense of relief to the usually worried girl. Itan was a focusing tool for Juniper. Putting her fears behind her she knew it was time to find out what all of this was about. She focused as hard as she possibly could on the things happening in front of her. It felt as though the Tattooine suns were roaring down on the room and she was working on the moisture farm again. The tension only accelerated the heat, sweat started forming on the woman’s already oily brow.

Was the other girl this nervous? Maja seemed as transfixed with the situation as Juniper did, which would prove useful when it came to her captor’s request. How would Juniper be able to describe someone without looking at them or listening to them? It was almost impossible. He looked exactly like the rest of them and they all seemed miserable. It was harder for a straight forward gun for hire like her to get any more detailed than that. It would prove useful to just let the other girl go first. Maybe when she answered it would give Juniper an opportunity to improvise.

Until then the delirious detainee would stand with her eyes closed, it would be a good chance to rest a little. It was that moment that she felt the same tug in her stomach. It was starting to get annoying to feel like you were in the right place when you hadn’t eaten in three days.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Anja Aj'Rou"]

It was like game of chicken but in reverse. Maja definitely didn't want to answer first and despite Junipers willingness to jump in first at every opportunity so far, her reticence spoke volumes.

Perhaps she was like Maja - unsure and unaware if her true abilities? Maja knew she was Force-Sensitive. She'd been told and - albeit without any control - had been able to draw on the Force when severely angered. But she'd been too stubborn to accept training from her sister and had decided to strike out herself and return only when she was worthy of the Sith Lord's attention.

But in terms of using the Force - for she was sure this is what this test was all about - she could no more use it than wrestle a rancor. So she did what she always did on these occasions - she told the truth. Her preference was to bluff and talk her way out of it - but only if it served a purpose. Her purpose today was to learn and that would not be achieved by lies.

So she shook her head and looked at Juniper. Perhaps they were more kindred spirits than she first thought - they were definitely in this together. "I cannot perceive anything because...I don't know how to." Blunt and to the point. That was Maja. There was no apology in her voice, just fact.

[member="Anja Aj'Rou"] | [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

"Honesty is a start.", her eyes wandered to Juniper as she said that before going back to Maja.

The Host Lord was disappointed that they were this inexperienced. Of course, the other people she's taught dabbled regularly. These two were younger and perhaps more naive.

"Magic isn't something to fear or worship. It's a tool that you choose to control, but it's not like water nor earth. You can't feel or see it in that regard.", she began and walked over to the Gulandi that she singled out before. Her piercing gaze wandered along his armour and then to his mask. Her hands reached up to slowly take it off, revealing the pale Sephi. A man who lacked all empathy in his eyes.

"This mask is fear.", she said holding it so the two could see. It was made of some kind of metal and etched with various designs using what seemed to be crude tools. Anja turned back, placing the mask back on the Gulandi. He only moved subtly from breathing. "You have to perceive without that fear. Your sight, your sound, even your smell and touch are all useless before magic. Perceive with it, don't try to find it, it's already there you just have to perceive using it as your sense.", of course magic was indeed the force but to some there were clear differences. For example, Anja's philosophy went against most conceptions. The force wasn't alive to her, it was little more than a tool.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

Maja wasn’t proud of her lack of knowledge. Paradoxically it was her pride that got her into this situation. So she listened and soaked up what she learned like a sponge. She’d experienced the Force before. Like when she found the crystal on Dantooine. The one in the Kinrath egg. She found it not with her usual senses but with what she could only attribute to the Force.

And when she got angry, she was able to tap into the Force. But only when she was angry. So she thought of all of her research on the girl called Rain who became a Sith Lord.

According to records, Bane had simply told Rain to use the Force and she had. She racked her brain for what she could remember from her notes. She’d used an emotion that much was sure. And it was….frustration. And Maja was certainly frustrated now. So she closed her eyes and held on to that emotion. Opening them again, she could sense…something. The woman she’d come to meet seemed alive with it, powerful even. Whereas by comparison, the girl next to her and her own ‘aura’ seemed weak by comparison.

“I sense…something. I don’t know if it’s magic or the Force or even if they’re the same thing, but I can…connect with it. Can I control it? What can I do with it?” Her tentative voice initially gained pace and at the end she was almost rambling, such was the passion and excitement in her voice. Finally she was starting to experience what her sister took for granted.

[member="Anja Aj'Rou"] | [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

Sensing the auras flare in the room, Juniper tingled with anticiption. It had been many years since she had been around this kind of emotion. Too long had she gone without feeling this inner hunger. When she lived with Zazmine she passed it off as what she thought was love. Juniper knew this situation had nothing to do with love and what she had been feeling all her childhood was instead the raw energy of the Force. She knew there were many more questions to ask, questions about her mother and father, questions about her aunt, and mostly questions about her captor many more to ask than were answered.

Juniper also knew she couldn't get out of this situation and whatever reasoning behind bringing her here she was a slave to it, if she didn't come to be equal to or surpass the woman next to her there was no way whoever had her would deem her worthy. She had asked them to feel, she had asked to to use that and take what they were fearing and manipulate it to their advantage. It would take the freelancer giving herself up to these feelings to truly pass the test. Passions and emotions would have to be fed into whatever heat this was. Albeit the Force or otherwise, this heat was hungry for something. She would need to trade her energy for power, life for strength.

Tapping into this was going to be brutal, especially the first time. The nervous woman tried to root herself again, reinforcing her stance and spreading her shoulders while straightening her back. Standing tall and proud had proven to increase the psyche and induce feelings of strength and confidence. She closed her eyes, focusing on the heat and the tiny vibrations in her inner ear. Juniper's brow started to produce more sweat, the heat started to take over her body like a swaddled baby. A single drop of sweat fell from her hairline down to her eye, stinging her slightly. Focus overrode the pain and she suffered through. The being in front of her was the same and she knew it, but he felt different. There was a suffering in the vibrations in her ear, an eternal torment the guard was radiating. Whatever conjured this creature was nothing light or positive, it evoked only feelings of anger and suffering.

"It's in pain." She whispered finally, her voice weak from focusing so hard. She opened her eyes and inhaled deeply. "Whatever you are, it's scared of you." A now worried Juniper took step back. "I felt darkness." A fever had started to take hold. Whatever she tapped into, that heat, it had taken hold of the woman. Little did she know that was the fever of untapped potential she had awoken.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Anja Aj'Rou"]

"Fair.", she said. Just that; in response to both of their answers. She turned back to the Gulandi, drew her blade and pierced it into the man's abdomen. The soldier didn't even defend themselves, they made a grunt in pain before collapsing as she pulled it out; sliding down the wall and the head falling limp at the neck. "Disciplined, not scared.", she noted at the other Gulandi who didn't react at all. Gulamendis was twisted and corrupted by the dark side, becoming an epicenter of death and chaos. Crakull nonetheless was far more dull in comparison but not necessarily any more peaceful.

"I now know you both have the ability, but I've yet to see any signs of talent. I have a test prepared for you. There's a certain sorcerer who is said to live on this world. A man who wears a dark cloak; I am eager to capture him -- alive. Find where he lives, and bring him to me. Do that and not only will I train you; I will make you stronger, more powerful, give you the ability to grasp anything out of your reach.", her statement was lackluster in details. Not where he was , not a general direction, just that he wore a dark cloak.

With that she sheathed the bloody vibroblade and looked to the two of them.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

Cup half full or cup half empty? On the plus side, she knew where she stood. Anja wanted them to prove their worth to her. That was OK. In fact it felt a lot like the pilgrimage she'd just been on following Rain's footsteps.

But, and it was an important but, then she had instructions and notes and weeks of meticulous research to follow. Here she had nothing except a gender and an item of clothing. As she pondered this, she felt a sudden rush of emotion. Although wide awake, she was aware of her sister. She was thinking of her and she was in some way at risk. She momentarily closed her eyes and was drawn to Kashyyk - the planet she'd recently visited. [member="Silara"] was in trouble or at least weak. In her mind she wanted to help her - to... To do what? She was planets away and what could she do even if she was beside her? Maja was weak and useless whereas Silara was powerful and magnificent. Oddly this situation only strengthened her resolve to do what was necessary to show her host she was worthy of training. So she could one day make her sister proud. A tear formed in her eye and she quickly rubbed it away with the back of her hand.

Looking defiantly at firstly Juniper and then then Anja, she simply nodded. "I accept the challenge." And the tone of her voice suggested she expected nothing but success in this endeavour. Because if not, she would die and not be worthy. That was the way of the Sith and she accepted it willingly.

[member="Anja Aj'Rou"] | [member="Juniper Le Fey"]

The stakes continued to get higher in whatever trap Juniper found herself ensnared in this time. It wasn’t often for the troublemaker to see someone die, but she knew it happened very frequently in her line of work. It phased her a little bit to see the twisted host of a man to fall to the floor in a bloodied stump, but she was more at ease knowing it could have been herself in that bloodied stump. It was not however too encouraging seeing as it could still be her if she didn’t come up to snuff. Her captor seemed hellbent on gaining power, it was that attitude that made people easily malleable in diplomatic situations. Though with that personality type keeping the situation diplomatic always ended up being the true test.

Whatever training this woman was offering was going to be won carefully, and Juniper was the duchess of careful planning. She knew to listen to Anja and reply accordingly. She would play into whatever hand the woman wanted to deal. This was a glorified game of pazzak so far, if she kept her poker face and let this woman win a few hands she could come in with the full sweep and win the game. The task seemed painstakingly intricate filled with deep investigation and a little rough housing, an all too familiar task for Juniper. She had spent enough of her time hunting down people with just as much information. This time was going to be different only in the fact that this target could manipulate the same energy field as Anja. It was a major variable Juniper had yet to face in her work.

It would probably require some sort of teamwork among the women to find this Sorcerer, a concept not foreign to the freelancer. She knew it would also be a competition and they would be judged accordingly because power was only for the deserving. She peered over to the woman, noticing her drop her guard and wipe away a tear before it could break from her eye. If the other woman saw that same weakness it could prove to hinder Maja’s progression. “I accept.”

A still very worn out Juniper took a deep breath. It wasn’t going to get any easier from here.

[member="Maja Vern"] [member="Anja Aj'Rou"]

Maja hadn't paid the dying guard a moment’s notice. But she was aware that Juniper had. To Maja, people who were not worthy should die. But only if that served a purpose. This guard’s death did just that - it was a lesson. Killing another would have been pointless. But regardless, death was inevitable for the weak - only the timing was up for debate.

Like Juniper. Maja needed her. For now. And if she proved worthy, they would continue together in this task. But she would not suffer fools gladly. Except…there was something about Juniper that suggested she was the stronger - for now - and so Maja looked to her partner-in-crime. “So, what do you suggest? Do you have any experience in finding people that I presume don't want to be found?”

She looked back at Anjou. “And I suspect the lack of detail was on purpose, no? Do you have any more information to share?” Her voice said she didn't care one way or another. Her voice lied.

[member="Juniper Le Fey"] | [member="Anja Aj'Rou"]

"I have told you all you need to know.", she replied.

There was no sign that Anja was against the asking of questions but she didn't seem particularly interested in answering them either. The dead body remained in place as if it was now apart of the structure itself; a pillar. Of course this changed when Anja turned her head to one of the soldiers, this one in particular wore a more prestigious armour, the Gulandi stomped his foot once. In response all but two of the soldiers left the room, the other two went over to the dead body and proceeded to carry it out.

Anja's eyes then became attentive of the two apprentices once more, "The galaxy is not to be underestimated. There are many things to be discovered.", she added onto her earlier statement.

The truth is, What Anja told them was all she knew, all but one fact; that this being was rumored to be a powerful sorcerer.

"You may begin at once, I will be evaluating you."

Maja glanced at Juniper again. Anja was being very clear about not being very clear! Maja had no idea if she was holding back or just had nothing more to give - but she knew she couldn’t press the point.

So she nodded to Anja as she spoke and calmly watched as the soldier was removed. His purpose was served. Maja shrugged at the insistance that they needed to move immediately. She had a small bag with her with essential items - candy bars, a blaster, more candy bars and not much else.

She gave Juniper a nudge. “Come on then, unless you have a better plan, we’d better get started.”
