Tython

A young man was walking through this most silent of places here on Tython. It was peaceful and some of the sand was blowing over the surface of the desert, caught in the soft breeze that swept over the endless dunes of the Silent Desert. It was already dusk, which meant that the desert slowly cooled off after the endless heat that had been present during the day. That made life a lot easier for the young man, who had been walking for the last couple of hours, only carrying basic supplies like a Holo-communicator, food and water that would last him for three days and a couple of data-pads, along with his Lightsaber. He was carrying all of these things because he had finally decided to learn more about the ways of the Lightsaber and the different Forms associated with Lightsaber combat. In the last couple of days he had been reading much about the sixth Form, Niman, and now he finally wanted to practice the Form. He had chosen to come to the desert to do this, since it is a very isolated and quiet place, perfect for his needs. He preferred places like this one, they gave him a feeling of comfort and peace. After all he had gone through he enjoyed such a change of pace and it also made him feel as if all his worries and duties had just gone, swallowed by the calmness that he felt. That made it a lot easier to concentrate on meditation and training, which were both things he would be doing soon.

Finally he came to a halt. He had decided that he had walked long enough and that he had finally found the perfect place. It was a small hill made of sand from which he could overlook most of his surroundings. Not that there was something to observe, he just felt more relaxed when he could see what was coming, but for now there was nothing in whatever direction he looked, which was good. The young man hated being disturbed when he was trying to meditate and learn something, which was already a hard enough process, without him having to restart it every time someone interrupted him or disturbed his meditation. It wasn't like he didn't like the company of others, he just wanted to be alone when he meditated or trained.

He let the bag he had carried all the way to here slowly descend to the ground, where it sank into the sand. Afterwards he opened the bag and took out one of the datapads. He activated it and it lit up, displaying a long text titled ''The Moderation Form''. It was another name for Form VI of Lightsaber combat. He sat down into the sand and started reading the text. The book started of with some history on the Form. It was said that Niman was at first practiced by the Royale Macheteros, who were elite guards of an ancient isolated human civilization called the ''Kashi Mer Dynasty''. They had developed Niman and Jar'Kai, another style of Lightsaber combat that was tied into Niman and Ataru. They had named Form VI Niman, because they had a double trinity of gods who were made up of six gods that were called the Niman, and they had given Jar'Kai its name because there were two trinities of gods. Later on this style was picked up by the Legions of Lettow, who were some of the first that had turned on the Jedi, but were defeated by them after a war between both factions. In the end the surviving Legionnaires were either hunted down by the Jedi or they lead their lives in exile, where they at last died and were almost completely forgotten. After that war, the Jedi started using the Form which they improved until it finally turned into the now known Form VI: Niman. It was also noted that one of the greatest practitioners of Niman was Exar-Kun, the Sith Lord that had brought war to the galaxy when he turned on the Jedi and succumbed to the temptations of the Dark Side.

When the bit on the history of Niman had finished a new part began that covered the basic explanation of Form VI. It said that Form VI Niman was the Jack of all trades style of Lightsaber combat, by including many different styles and techniques, but not really excelling at any of them. This made it a Form that could easily be practiced by many without the need for extensive training, which made it a preferred Form for Jedi Consulars, who were much more focused on developing their Force powers, rather than training with their Lightsaber. Although if one was to work hard enough and learn as much about the Form as one could, one would eventually become a master of everything, which made this Form quite unique. The Form incorporated many elements from all the Forms that had come before it, however excluding the second Form, Makashi. The basic training was a mixture of blade-work and Force-Powers. The blade-work part was only half of the overall training, which involved both aggressive and defensive techniques, but this was not the complete focus of the training. This made the Form not very effective when it came to dueling or fighting on larger scales. It was much more dependent on the users creativity, improvisation and intuition during combat. This was however compensated by the incorporation of Fore-Powers into the fighting techniques and once someone had mastered both parts, they were able to obliterate an entire group of enemies all by themselves. Although many people did criticize the Form as not being demanding enough, it was still a very viable Form of Lightsaber combat once it was mastered.

By now it was almost completely dark. Only a small bit of the sun was still visible, sending out its last bit of light for the day. Soon it would be completely dark, then the young man would have to rely on the datapads as light sources. He had now read through the first datapad, which had included some history and the basics of Form VI. Now he moved on to the second, which was called ''Form VI Training Lessons''. This one had a lot of information on the different techniques and stances that were associated with the sixth Form. Before he started reading the what was on the datapad, he looked around. Everything was still quiet and no one was in sight as far as he could see. He was starting to really like this place. If he was ever going to do something like this again, he would definitely come here again. It was the most peaceful place he knew. Not a single person in a radius of many, many kilometers and no sound to disturb him. Then he looked back at his datapad and started reading.

The first bit was on the different opening stances. One was called the low-guard stance. It included holding the blade low and pointing to the side, while standing up right with the feet placed close together. The young man studied the picture that was given with the explanation and then put the datapad, with the picture facing him, into the sand. He tried to imitate the stance. First he placed his feet close together, then he straightened his back. After that, he used the Force to pull his Lightsaber out of the bag and into his hand. He activated the golden blade. His surroundings were immediately lit up by the golden glow that emanated from the Lightsaber's blade. He twirled it around twice before letting the hilt rest in his palm with the blade pointing in front of him. Then he moved held the blade in front of him with both hands and pointed it to the ground. It almost looked like one of the opening stances for Niman. The only thing missing was the blade pointing to the side and one foot being placed in front of the other. The young man looked at the datapad to make sure he was standing right. He noticed that his feet were next to each other, instead of in front of each other and that his blade was pointing in the wrong direction. He quickly changed his right foot's position so that it was in front of the other and tilted the blade to the side. Now he had taken the stance correctly, with only a couple of small mistakes here and there, but those would surely be corrected if he practiced more this stance more.

He deactivated his Lightsaber and picked up the datapad again. The next stance was the actual opening stance of Niman. The picture showed a man standing with his arm extended to the side and pointing his Lightsaber away from his body. The other hand was held in front of his chest. His feet were shoulder-wide apart and parallel. He sat the datapad back onto the sand, with the picture facing towards him again, and took a step back. He reactivated his Lightsaber and placed his feet shoulder-wide and parallel, just like in the picture. then he held one of his hands in front of his chest, with his palm facing inwards, and held out the other arm, pointing the blade of his lightsaber away from his body. This stance was rather easy to take, since the only thing he had to do was extend his arm and place his hand in front of his chest. It would be much easier to learn than the one before.

Then he hunched down in front of the datapad, with his Lightsaber deactivated, and scrolled down to the next stance. This one had a picture of a man standing upright, with his blade held at head height pointing upwards and angled slightly inwards. One of the man's feet was placed a bit forwards and his feet were relatively far apart. Eager to try out this stance, the young man stood up again and placed his feet just like the picture had shown him. Then he activated his blade again and held it in both his hands at the same level as his head was. He angled it slightly inwards, just like the text written next to the picture had said he should. This stance was rather easy as well and it would be easy to learn too. He would just add these stances to his daily routine training, which consisted of repeating different techniques every morning and evening, before going to sleep and directly after waking up. This routine had worked well for him, after all he was now much better in employing the techniques of Soresu his master had taught him and if he did the same thing with these stances, he would certainly learn them at an even faster rate, since they were much easier to learn.

Everything was silent. The young Padawan couldn't even hear the familiar hum of his lightsaber when he moved it around to try the different stances again. First the wide open stance, then the stance including the blade at head-height and last the low-guard stance. After assuming those positions a couple of times they were much more familiar to him. He was now able to enter the different stances with almost no mistakes done, though he would still have to work on them a bit. The young man decided he would now try to continue on and try to learn the different techniques that are associated with Niman. To do that he picked up the datapad again and scrolled a bit further, until the next segment began. This part was title ''Pushing Slash & Draw Closer''. He assumed those were the names of two techniques employed in Niman and he was correct. The Former was, as the text explained, a slash against an enemy that was followed up by a Force Push to hurl the enemy into a larger crowd of them. The other one was the direct opposite. First he had to gain control over the enemy using the Force and pull them closer which the User followed up by a slash at the enemy. The first seemed to be more effective against a crowd of opponents while the other was more focused on a single opponent. He wanted to try out both but he was here alone without any training droids he could use for that. He decided he would train those techniques back at the temple, but for now he wanted to try out the motions that were involved in both techniques.

He stood up and reignited his Lightsaber which, once again, gave him a small sphere of vision around him. He assumed the wide open opening stance of Niman and imagined a target in front of him. Once he had done that he imagined the target was a Sith with a Lightsaber just like his own, so that it would not be that easy to hit the imaginary opponent. Then he repositioned his left foot so that it was further away from the other one. Now his side was facing the imaginary opponent and he tried to cut the imaginary chest diagonally, but found it too difficult to reach that far without getting so close to his opponent so as to give him the opportunity for a counterattack. He had made a mistake. He had to reposition his foot and strike at the same time, not the former followed by the latter. So he tried again. He took the opening stance again and this time he did the cut and the footwork at the same time. This time he cut the imaginary chest perfectly, without having the difficulty of reach. He extended his other arm as well, as if he was then pushing the opponent with the Force, but because there was no one, he had nothing to push against, so he didn't draw upon the Force to make the push, he just extended his arm as an imitation of what would happen against a real opponent.

He moved on to the second technique after he had replenished his health with the supplies he had brought with him. Again, he assumed the Niman opening stance and imagined an opponent. This time he extended his arm as his first move and imagined himself pulling his opponent towards himself. Once the imaginary opponent would be in front of him he cut it across the chest with his Lightsaber. The man enjoyed training both techniques. They combined his two favorite things when it cam to combat. Defeating your opponent with the Lightsaber as well as with the Force and even though he wasn't very skilled in using the Force he still enjoyed doing some simple combat tricks that helped him, like throwing things at enemies using the Force or pushing them back. He had learned a lot today and now it was time for him to get back to the Jedi Temple and get some rest. The journey back would be long, but he had enough supplies to make it. From there he would continue on towards Coruscant via shuttle and once he arrived at Coruscant he would reunite with his Master again to prepare for the big Invasion on Ossus.
