Strengths & Weaknesses:
  • + Fleet killer :: The power of the Undying was unstoppable through standard fleet tactics. It could quickly destroy a fleet of capital ships while its escorting fleet handled the small fighters and gunships.
  • - Infinitely Valuable :: Due to being unique and extremely expensive to build, the Undying was only sparingly used in order to avoid being destroyed in battle.
  • - Unstable Reactor :: Should the reactor be disturbed via internal sabotage, it would trigger an irreversible chain reaction that would destroy the Undying and surrounding ships.
  • - Relatively slow Hyperdrive :: Compared to other capital ships close to its size, the Undying's hyperdrive was slow. This meant that it would always lag behind the rest of the fleet when a battle starts.
  • - Large profile :: The large nature of the ship meant that it had a higher chance of getting hit by enemy fire than a normal wedge-shaped starship. Due to being a capital ship, the Undying could be destroyed just like any other if under concentrated fire.

Description:

Primarily built at the distant shipyards of Copero, the Undying was a monstrous weapon for the One Sith. Consisting of a rapidly recharging superlaser mounted on a massive capital ship, the Undying could effectively destroy several capital ships in rapid succession. This ship was called a "fleet killer" due to this massive amount of firepower. Because of this, it was considered a superweapon by the galaxy.

The frame of the Undying was based on the ancient Harrower-class dreadnaughts. This was due to there being a middle trough down the center of the ship's front that allowed for the weapon to be placed there. This meant that the ship was required to have a clear line of sight between itself and its targets in order to effectively target capital ships. The advanced targeting systems of the Undying also allowed it to accurately target anything over one hundred meters with its superlaser.

The rapid recharging capabilities of the Undying was due to its tremendously huge hypermatter reactor - which took up the majority of the ship's interior. This reactor generated well more than hundreds of stars worth of energy and consumed a fleet's worth of matter. Even with the massive amount of energy from the reactor, the ship itself could not power a lot of turbolasers beyond that. The rest of its armaments were quadlasers for point defense.

Sporting two shield generators, which were typical for ships over 1,600 meters in length, they were nearly always on due to the ship using only laser-based weaponry rather than particle-based weaponry such as hypervelocity guns and mass-drivers. This benefited the ship greatly when it came to withstanding fire from ships.

Due to its expensive construction and importance in deterring nations from attacking the One Sith, the Undying was stationed on Coruscant when on standby. It was only called into battle in must-win situations.

The Undying under construction.

History:

Designed by Jason Kolyat at Titan Industires, the ship was a demonstration of the amazing speed that could be achieved if an entire nation poured its resources into the creation of the ship. The representative of the One Sith for the Undying's creation was Darth Junra, also known as Daella Apparine. During the entire construction of the ship, extreme efforts were put into keeping it a secret from the Republic. While the Republic did get word that the One Sith were creating something huge, they did not get details of the superwepaon before its completion.

Originally, the Undying was planned to be a planet killer. However, complications after the ship had been construction revealed that the superlaser was much weaker than intended. Still, the One Sith was pleased to see that the starship was still capable of destroying an entire fleet by itself in a very short amount of time.

Once the superweapon was completed, it was quickly moved to Coruscant to remain on standby until its first use.

Procedure of Use:
  • Due to its valuable existance, the ship shall be managed and roleplayed via the consensus of the One Sith's Faction Admins as well as in accordance with the Board's rules.
Due to being stationed at Coruscant when on standby, the use of the ship will always be attempted if Coruscant is the subject of an Invasion.

[*]Due to being fragile while alone, the ship shall be accompanied by a full fleet meant to protect it.
[*]In combat situations on Coruscant:
  • Due to the power required to begin a series of fleet killing shots, the ship shall take a at least 5 thread posts in preparation of its first barrage of fire. This allows enemy player characters a chance to escape or explain their survival due to the fact that the superweapon will destroy normal ships once it begins its round of fleet killing.
  • Due to having its hyperdrive and superlaser being fed off the same reactor, five posts in the thread must pass after the ship fires its superlaser before it can enter hyperspace.

[*]In combat situations not on Coruscant:
  • Same as in combat situations on Coruscant.
  • Due to its slow hyperdrive, the ship shall arrive in the thread only after the 20th post in the thread.
  • Due to having its hyperdrive and superlaser being fed off the same reactor, five posts in the thread must pass after the ship enters the thread before it can prepare to fire.

I’m open for negotiation on things. In short, the superweapon is not a planet killer but instead just a fleet killer. Its function is based on the Silencer from the Old Republic.
If you feel that something must be changed before approval, please tell me what it is and the justification and I’ll manage.

Just staking my claim now I've had a look. I'll think it over, already got advice coming in from all sides, virtually all of which I'll be ignoring. I'd personally have been happier with a responsibly used planetkiller than with a fleetkiller, in terms of number of reports likely to be generated, but you've put in firm, comprehensive limits and weaknesses. There's a few things that need to be hammered out yet. I'll try to get back to you soon, hopefully this afternoon/evening.

Since there's been 140 views on this thing already, for maximum transparency I'll be recording all points pro and contra. Here are my initial thoughts.
  • I like your decision to reduce the capital armaments to zero. Without a number for the quad laser batteries, I'll need some sort of a description of how many you have. A token amount? A ridiculous amount? Something in between?
  • I also like your decision to have two standard shield generators. Reasonable, not excessive.
  • Your development threads represent significant work, but there are large portions of the primary development thread that were written in a cursory and insubstantial way.
  • Your manufacturer isn't capable of making a ship this size; since you've added your faction, which has completed a 60-post shipyard development thread, it's acceptable.
  • Your sublight speed will need to drop to Class 9.
  • Your reactor won't be vulnerable to just internal sabotage. A hypermatter reactor sufficient to power a superlaser will be, as you've noted, huge -- and will represent a serious liability in any kind of fleet engagement. Your 'Unstable Reactor' clause needs more clarity on that subject. If your shields go down, concentrated weapons fire will turn this ship into a very big bomb/hyperspace disturbance.
  • Your slow hyperdrive clause is, ex post facto, trying to pass off a tactical necessity (positioning behind the fleet) as a weakness. This is not acceptable, and doesn't count as a weakness.
  • Your line of sight clause needs to discuss the vessel's geometry and the need for reorientation, as they relate to retargeting time.
  • More than once, you mention that it can destroy any normal capital ship, but specifics are necessary. Roughly how large of a vessel can a single shot destroy? Roughly how large of a vessel can be destroyed by allocating all the shots in a burst/series to a single target? How do single shots and concerted fire affect planetary shields? How many shots are fired in a burst/shot series? What is the recharge time between series? What is your conception of a 'normal' ship that Will Be Destroyed?
  • In concept, I like your 20-post and 5-post spacing/delay clauses. However, as written they're very easily abused. Please clarify them, ideally to refer to fleet-based posts in the local engagement within the thread.
  • Since internal sabotage through PVP is your preferred method for this vessel's destruction, please clarify the obstacles, access routes, and conditions which would affect attempted boarders. The more detail, the better.
