DESCRIPTION
The Zann Consortium saw early success in fleet engagements, using their large capital ships to destroy enemy corvettes and frigates while their swarm tactics with starfighters would decimate their opponents of equal caliber. However, once the fleet started to go up against larger craft such as cruisers and destroyers, the Consortium would consistently come up short and on the losing end. It was clear that to survive in larger and better equipped battles, that they would need a counter to enemy capital ships. Matching the enemy capital ship with capital ship would be far too costly in both credits and manpower, which forced the Consortium to choose different means to accomplish the task. Must research and development went into creating an Artillery Ship of a much more affordable nature. The Swordfish was born.

Fitting a cruiser type weapon onto a frigate size ship was not an easy task and came with draw backs of its own, most notably being the reactor needed to power such a weapon was too big for the confines of the frigate. This forced the designers of the ship to have half of the core of the reactor, to be located on the outside, which of course exposed it to danger of many natures including enemy fire. So now, the designers had a ship with a big gun able to produce a massive amount of damage, but in return could not take much if any damage in return. To adjust for this, the designers made modifications to the hyperdrive to allow the ship to make quicker jumps as needed.

The final product was made for hit and run tactics. The ship would jump in, line up for a firing solution, fire twice and then jump out as quickly as possible. With the drawbacks of a slower shield charge, the vessel would not have shields during its firing process and also up to 15 seconds after firing, so making it out to hyperspace after firing, would be key to the survival of the ship and her crew.
