The Professional Political Character

6 things not to do with a political character.

  • Don't Meta
Believe it or not, Political Characters are originally intended for the writing of stories, plots, and adventures. They were not originally designed for attempting to controlling the Meta, or for making OOC Regulations, or for enjoying random OOC Infiltrations, or for offering Passive Aggressive Commentaries about IC events in pseudo-public.
Alternatives: If you have an opinion you'd like your peers to consider? Consider starting a new topic in your Faction's Discussion Forum. Express your thoughts, receive feedback, work together with your Faction Leaders, and move forward as a group together. You don't have to build a character to make your ideas, opinions, or plotlines viable.

  • Don't Soapbox
We get it. Political characters have an opinion. But you have to remember that It's their opinion. Not yours. A political characters opinion is shaped by their biography, their upbringing, their past, their conflicts, and their victories. And that opinion exists to write a story and further the plot and action. Not to provide you the writer with a means of personal testimony.
Alternatives: If you have an opinion you'd like your peers to consider? Consider starting a new topic in your Faction's Discussion Forum. Express your thoughts, receive feedback, work together with your Faction Leaders, and move forward as a group together.

  • Don't Skip the Bio
Creating a political character is first and foremost, creating a character. They are a person. They have a life. They have tastes, pet-peeves, hobbies, parents, siblings, friends, strengths, weaknesses, and even emotional baggage. Take the same amount of time crafting a political character as you would any mage or martial hero. The devil is in the details.
Alternatives: Consider raising your new characters post count through common quests, battles, and adventure threads before diving into their political profession. If you can't write you character outside of an air-conditioned pacifist boardroom environment? It's time to rethink playing them in the CHAOS.

  • Don't be Offended
Politics is about Compromise. If your bad with Compromise? Consider creating a Sith. Political characters never get what they want. They fight just as hard, talk just as much, and endure many conflicts. But they never get the total victory like the hero and the villain. They get the compromise. So don't get offended when you character spends there entire life fighting for a cause they never actually see to fruition. That's politics baby.
Alternatives: Consider creating a martial hero or villain instead. Or learn to accept that life is 'not fair', Utopia's are lame, and go about enjoying the journey. Being offended is a choice. No one can force you to be. You possess the power to forgive anyone completely, at any time, for anything.

  • Don't Surprise Us
In politics, surprises are a bad thing. Suddenly creating a new thread with dire consequences that requires rapid action on the part of your Faction Members is considered, 'bad form'. Politics takes time. Rash actions are never wise actions. So avoid jumping the gun. The less emergency sessions, the better. (Yes. Exceptions apply.)
Alternatives: Consider starting a new topic in your Faction's Discussion Forum. Express your new plot, describe the story elements, receive feedback or participants, work in harmony with your Faction Rules, and move forward as a Roleplaying group together. Creating an OOC thread for any questions, concerns, or comments is also highly recommended.

  • Don't Reply
If someone has created a contentious or rule-breaking scenario in order to stir up aggression or to express their rage/quit emotions? Don't participate with them. You will take blame. You will share in their trespass. You may even become subject to censure by Staff. If you suspect a thread of being false testimony? Do not post in it. It's just that simple.
Alternative: PM the other writer and express to them your concern. Maybe it's just a misunderstanding? Maybe they made an honest mistake? Maybe the Faction Leaders have yet to create a thread explaining the plotline they want you enjoy? There are a thousand reasons why writing can make us feel uncomfortable. Don't assume. Communicate. Treat others as you would enjoy to be treated. With respect.

In Closing: Common Sense is Cultural Sense. Build it. Love it. Live it. ...Have fun. :D

Selena you old horse thief, you old so and so. How's tricks? Also great thread. It's so rare to see a well written politician. Gren Skylark comes to mind.
