The Midnight Moon

Ourania Amun

Guest
Ouriana listened as the fire crackled but a few steps away from her. It was an unusually cold night for this early in the season but not uncommon, in the distance members of her clan could be seen. Earthen huts and tents were being erected, while still others placed leather and hide bound structures up as temporary shelters. The Khoonda plains were vast and wide, the structures of the more urbanized areas of Dantooine could be seen. Even as the pthalo and prussian blue hues of the midnight black roved across the skies. Glimmering stars and the bone white color of the moon shined down across the grass.

The wind carried the howls of the hounds, and the fire continued to snap and pop. Ourania closed her eyes and listened to nature's symphony. She listened as the river flowed nearby rushing into the waterfall below, tomorrow they would fish and forage, tonight the clan would rest. Kopelle played along on his flute adding to the ambiance that surrounded the camp. [member="Lyris Vyrehl"] was somewhere within the camp, of that Ourania was certain just as she was certain that [member="Riela Amun"] was also nearby. [member="Prudii Amun"] lingering around the camp or perhaps he had gone out with the hunters earlier, if so then Ourania felt secure with knowing that the hunt would be successful.

Her eyes caught sight of Nan, an elderly woman who arrived with a cast iron pot. Ourania moved to help fix the pot over the fire. She then sat beside Nan as they both tended to the contents of the pot. Tonight's dinner, made from the left over rice and vegetables from their journey. Kopelle paused his flute playing to bring out an iron griddle where another of the clan brought over some flour and water in separate bowls. A quiet night overall throughout the camp, even as they set to welcome [member="Bryce Americus"] into the fold.

He would be met by two of the clan's hunters at his landing site, and brought on horseback to the camp. Where the site of rather primitive tools and high end technology came together as one. Beskar'gam laid out with pieces taken off for cleaning or mending. Blasters laid beside hunting knives, all on blankets or tables with fires and standing torches being the only sources of light.

There was something to be said for natural light.

The warmth and glow of carefully tended fires, the flickering aura of lit torches...there was something comforting about them compared to the artificial light that infused daily life. The light of the moon and stars was added to that and would have normally set her at ease under most circumstances.

But duty called, and while Lyris had her moments, even she would not ignore the summons of her Alor to ready the welcome for a new brother. So she busied herself around the small camp, aiding in the construction of the shelters by hauling materials and tools that would be of use to whomever called for them. She was only too glad to use the gift of her preternatural strength to make the work go smoothly and quickly.

It wasn’t long before her work was mostly done, and the young woman turned her attention back to patrolling just beyond the camp perimeter. She passed [member="Ourania Amun"] on her way through the center, nodding briefly and tapping the small device in her right ear to signal that she’d be within comm range if needed. Moments afterwards, the comfort of solitude and moonlight was her own to savor once more, and she set her mind to work in an effort to ignore the unease of being so close to her birthplace.

From the skies above, a M-250 slowly descended to the earth, it's landing gear fully extended and making it's imprint into the dirt. The engines died down to a silence just before the canopy opened, revealing Bryce in the pilot's seat. He looked around the landscape and took a deep breath of the fresh air. He reached behind his chair and grabbed his backpack then put it on before jumping out of his ship. As his boots hit the dirt, two Mandalorians rode up to him with another horse ready for him to mount.

"Been a while since I've been out for a ride," he mentioned. Bryce pulled himself up onto the saddle then locked his feet into the stirrups. The two rode off and Bryce took off behind them. The brisk wind that blew past Bryce as he rode felt good against his face. It wasn't long before they reached the encampment. Bryce jumped down from the horse and looked around the camp. To see so many working together, like a true clan, was something else. He didn't experience that with his clan. In fact, he didn't really experience much with his clan. One moment, they were numerous and strong. The next, they just disappeared.

He knew things would change for him now, though.

There was something beautiful about Dantooine at night how the stars felt so endless from the surface. The sound of hooves against the ground carried out before the sight of them revealed the group. The two warriors had indeed met with a young man that was to be inducted into the clan that very night. Ourania stood silently at the entrance of the camp, the two warriors gestured for [member="Bryce Americus"] to step forward. "Welcome I am Ourania, might I have your name young warrior?" There was a warmth to her voice the sky darkened behind her and the cackling of fires coupled with small lumens strung between tents gave their light to the camp. "Come with me," she beckoned him to walk beside her, "I hope your travels were well."

They would pass, [member="Lyris Vyrehl"] and somewhere in the distance, she was sure [member="Prudii Amun"] lurked. Her hands were behind her back as she matched Bryce's pace. The pair walked down a path between tents and buildings that looked like they could be taken down at a moment's notice. "We'll be here for the season, hunt what we can and then move again." Clan Amun was always on the move, never a group to stay in a place for long. "Tell me about yourself."

She took a deep breath, slowly inhaling and exhaling as the ship touched down in the spot set aside for it. Away from the camp and the game trails that surrounded them, it would suffice until the clan moved on and they were able to house the ship in a more amenable place. Lyris took one last stroll around the perimeter before the others approached, ensuring the sensors and watch points were properly set and marked.

"Perimeter is set. Standard patrol and sensor array. On comms if you need me." she said quietly, waiting for the usual acknowledgement and then tapping her comm back into it's monitoring mode.

Steps carried the woman back to the camp, in time to see Ourania approach with Bryce beside her. "Welcome home." she said simply, inclining her head with a smile as she joined the pair in walking to the heart of the camp and the large fire at the center. There were a number of other clan members there, attending to conversations and other tasks in the area, and others still would make their way in and out as time and duties permitted.

Curious to hear his answers to Ourania's questions, she canted her head and remained otherwise silent and attentive.

Bryce stepped forward to align himself with Ourania before they walked off together. He carefully looked around the camp to get a feel for everything within despite knowing that it all could change very soon. Learning of Clan Amun's nomadic nature was an integral statue he would have to adapt to. For him, that would be simple. He was already used to drifting among the stars in his ship, moving from place to place as he saw fit.

"My name is Bryce. Some people call me Buck. You can call me whatever you'd like miss, just don't call me late for supper." Bryce enjoyed being the comedic part of a group. To keep others spirits high was something he always aspired to do. "I'm from Adumar. Parents had a farm there. Lived there most of my life until they kicked me out on my own. I was a rebellious little runt. Found an old junker of a starship. Fixed it up on my own. Been living out of it ever since. Tried contacting other family, but they didn't wanna hear from me. So I kept it movin' on my own. Survivin'. No family to call my own, y'know? Then I hear about you folks out here doin' your thing. It was hard for me to not come by and see how you folk operate. MAybe I can find my own place with you and yours."
