Founding
The Jedi Order, later known as the Old Jedi Order and referred to as the Holy Order of the Jedi Knights, was an ancient monastic peacekeeping organization unified by its belief and observance of the Force, specifically the light side. The Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the Galactic Republic, and became the most famous of the various groups that relied on the Force for their power. Led by a series of Jedi Councils, the Order grew over the millennia despite facing many trials, most often threats from the Sith, wielders of the dark side of the Force.

During several Great Schisms, Dark Jedi broke away from the order. These schisms led to several wars, including the Hundred-Year Darkness, after which the Dark Jedi fled, and founded the Sith Empire. The Sith were eventually found by the Republic and their discovery led to the Great Hyperspace War, and a Sith invasion of Coruscant. The Jedi on Coruscant, led by Jedi Guardian Anavus Svag and Jedi Master Memit Nadill, successfully defended the planet and defeated the Sith. Their Dark brethren wouldn't stay defeated for long, however, and, during the next several thousand years, many wars would be fought.

A thousand years later, after the Great Sith War, the Mandalorians saw their chance and attacked the weakened Republic. After the war, the Jedi that had led the Republic's military, Revan and Alek Squinquargesimus, disappeared. When they returned, it became clear they had turned to the Dark Side, and during the war that followed many Jedi died. During the aftermath the Order was left numbering less than one-hundred Jedi, until it was rebuilt by Meetra Surik and the Lost Jedi.

Years later, the galaxy was again engulfed in a war between the Republic and the Sith. Led by Lord Hoth, the Jedi were able to regroup and push back the Sith, who eventually withdrew to the planet Ruusan. After seven long battles on Ruusan, the Sith were defeated and presumed wiped out. One of them managed to survive and reorganize the Sith Order. Though Darth Bane and the Sith Lords that followed in his footsteps remained hidden, they were patient. Millennia later, they revealed themselves, determined to have their revenge.

At the height of a separatist crisis, the Republic was split in two and a war once again engulfed the galaxy. During the Clone Wars, the Republic's armies were once again led by the Jedi. During the war's first battle, nearly two hundred Jedi died before Master Yoda and a Clone army arrived to assist them. However, nobody expected that the Supreme Chancellor was, in fact, a Sith Master. The Jedi eventually learned the truth, but it was already too late; the Order was virtually annihilated by the Sith and betrayed by the Republic they had served for nearly all of it's existence. Only a few survived the Great Jedi Purge. However, Anakin Skywalker, with the indirect help of his son, Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, eventually defeated the Sith, and Luke formed the New Jedi Order during the time of the New Republic.

The New Jedi Order
The New Jedi Order was founded in 11 ABY by Luke Skywalker, the last surviving apprentice of the legendary Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda. Its loose policies regarding age restrictions, relationships, the taking of multiple padawans by a single master, the donning of personal apparel and the allowance of personal possessions were all products of Master Skywalker's time spent with Callista Ming, a survivor of the Altisian Jedi taught by their mysterious founder, Djinn Altis.

Though the inaugural class only numbered twelve students, in time, the Jedi Order came to acquire students from all walks of life. Some arrived from groups unaffiliated with the Old Jedi Order, such as the Matukai. Others came from sub-sects of the original Order, such as the Jensaarai, and even the Iron Knights, taught by Aqinos, a contemporary of Master Altis and one of the few surviving Masters of the Great Jedi Purge. Others came from groups of force-sensitives taught by Padawan-survivors of the Old Order, including the Agents of Ossus and the School of Hidden Wisdom.

In return, the Jedi sent emissaries to other force-organizations. Some, like the Baran Do, welcomed the return of the Jedi, while others such as the Zeison Sha were bitter, and many more were simply indifferent.

No matter what their origins, all that followed the Light Side, no matter how close they walked the line, were welcome. Skywalker showed few prejudices, allowing even former agents of the Galactic Empire such as Emperor's Hand Mara Jade and Noghri Death Commando Karnakarrhu clan Hakh'khar, whom had proven themselves on separate occasions to have the heart to be Jedi. Later on, though unwilling to train the Barabel Saba Sebatyne himself due to the aggressiveness of the species, possibly due to his earlier experience with the Chistori Desann, he accepted the Sebatyne Nest into the Jedi Order after his student Eelysa had trained her.

Early Conflicts
The Jedi's early days were marked by many clashes with the remnants of the old Galactic Empire. From the attack of the reawakened spirit of Exar Kun, to Admiral Daala, to the Empire Reborn, to the Disciples of Ragnos, to the Second Imperium, and finally the Diversity Alliance Crisis, the Jedi Order emerged victorious and stronger, with over a hundred active members, but the worse was to come.

Yuuzhan Vong War
In 25 ABY, the Jedi Order was split between two parties: Luke Skywalker's Traditionalists and Kyp Durron's Radicals. While the Traditionalist party sought to work alongside the New Republic, taking a slower, more reactive approach to the conflict, the Radicals wished to disregard politics and actively wage their own private war against the invaders. Among the Radicals were the Wild Knights, a group of elite force-sensitive aces trained personally by Jedi Knight Saba Sebatyne. Outside the Order, the Radical view was notably taken by New Republic officials such as Garm Bel Iblis and Airen Cracken, who both led their own resistance groups in the wake of governmental destabilization caused by the Fall of Coruscant in 27 ABY. Meeting at Borleias with his old friend Wedge Antilles, Skywalker would also do the same, forming the Insiders, resistance cells that would later rally behind the Jedi Coalition during the Second Galactic Civil War.

Early in the war, the Jedi Order lost their refuge on Yavin IV, and the Yuuzhan Vong began to discredit the Jedi, many times offering to spare the world’s violent conquest by relinquishing their Jedi defenders. After the fall of Duro, Senator Viqi Shesh proposed the Appeasement Bill which would outlaw the Jedi Order. Though it was voted down, Master Skywalker nonetheless created the Great River to evacuate the younger, less battle-ready Jedi to locations such as the Shelter at the Maw, and the Eclipse Station in the Deep Core. Partnered with organizations such as the Antarian Rangers, the Smuggler's Alliance, and the Space Rescue Corps, Master Skywalker was able to protect the future of the Order from the ravages of war. Unfortunately at Myrkr, many young Jedi, including the strike team's leader Anakin Solo, were tragically killed in a suicide mission to destroy the worldship Baanu Rass, the cloning facility of the voxyn.

Involvement of Jedi in the war greatly differed. While some like Masters Kam and Tionne Solusar cared for the younglings, others provided support, such as Cilghal's medical expertise and Streen's battle meditation. Some such as Colonel Jaina Solo opted for military commissions, while others yet such as Jedi Knights Kubariet and Karnakarrhu clan Hakh'khar served under the New Republic Intelligence Service. Some even stood to protect their homeworlds, such as Kirana Ti, a Dathomiri witch who went on to found a Jedi Praxeum to train her people in the ways of the Jedi.

When the Galactic Federation was formed in 28 ABY, Skywalker and Durron reconciled with the formation of the High Council, where they both sat as leaders of the new government in a split twelve-person ruling council equally divided by Federation officials and Jedi.

Aftermath
At the Conclave on Zonama Sekot, the remaining Jedi met. Between the Voxyn, the Slayers, and the Peace Brigade, the Jedi's number had halved; among the Masters lost were Aqinos, Eelysa, Ikrit, and Lar Le'Ung.

In his speech, Master Skywalker left each Jedi to choose his path for himself, a decision that would come to haunt him six years after the end of the war. Until then, the Reconstruction Authority rebuilt the old Jedi Temple to its exact ancient specifications as a token of gratitude, and during this time number of active Jedi reached two hundred.

In the Dark Nest Crisis, the survivors of the Myrkr team disappeared into the Unknown Regions, only to emerge as joiners to the Killiks, who were at war with the Chiss. Threatened to push the Federation into war with the Chiss, Master Skywalker acted quickly, establishing himself as Grandmaster and using the newly formed Master's Council to maintain a firmer grip over the Order. Disbanding the High Council, Skywalker sought to distance the Order from the politics of the government, sowing the seeds for the next conflict.

Second Galactic Civil War
Four years after the end of the Swarm War, the Second Corellian Insurrection sent the Corellian Jedi of the Order faced inner turmoil, unsure of whether to support the Federation with the rest of their Jedi brethren, or side with their blood and their homeworlds. In the end, the Jedi found themselves at a truce with the Confederation, agreeing to cease hostilities to each independently fight their common enemy, Darth Caedus, who had seized absolute control of the Galactic Federation from his colleague, Cha Niathal.

In the ensuing conflict, Caedus was killed, but the seeds were sown. Admiral Daala, an old enemy of the New Jedi Order, was voted in as the new Chief of State and forced Master Skywalker to resign as Grandmaster. Making contact with the New Sith Order, Master Skywalker lured the Sith armada into battle with his StealthX wing, and subsequently in a short campaign, the Jedi inflicted astounding losses on the Sith armada. Despite their victories, Master Skywalker was soon lost to the Jedi.

Interbellum
In the succeeding years, the Order underwent many important changes. The Council reversed Skywalker's decision to cut the Federation's ties with the Galactic Federation, returning to the Temple on Coruscant, although the Triumvirate remained dissolved. They also restored the First Knowledge, Reconciliation, and Reassignment Councils, as well as the Librarian's Assembly, Circle of Jedi Healers, and other formal organizations within the Old Jedi Order, adopting an increasingly bureaucratic approach to managing and organizing the New Jedi Order. The Jedi Service Corps was also restored, although it was no longer made to be a punishment for Jedi failing the Initiate trials, as the founding principle of the NJO was that a persistent student that applied themselves completely could reach their goals, and the Council would never discourage or cast away a potential Knight. Thus, membership was entirely voluntary and Initiates that joined their ranks were still eligible to become full-fledged Jedi.

Many Jedi chapter houses were restored as places that Jedi on long deployments could travel for resupply and rest. They also served to test individuals for force-sensitivity, and served to increase the Jedi's local influence in many corners of the Order. Many academies that had been abandoned, such as those on Dathomir, Endor, and Yavin 4, were restored as the Order's lenient policy toward age and romantic attachment continued to swell its numbers.

Over the next several years, individual Jedi defected, often killing their Jedi Masters in the process. In a shadow war not seen since the Dark Wars, many Jedi were assassinated by the New Sith Order without a trace of evidence. The numbers of battle-hardened Knights and Masters quickly dwindled, leaving many prospective students without teachers. Among the Order's losses were the Bothan Master Tarvas Kay'lak, Master Nartous Graneta, Master N’niel Stryker, Master Orin Tavrott, Master Viskal Tirto, Zabrak Master Arion Tor'un, Knight Elissa, and countless others. Aside from those that died in combat, many of the old members of Luke's original classes began to die of natural causes.

Crisis and Revival
Over the next 90 years, both the Jedi and another new Sith threat would rise greatly in number. The foundations of the Jedi Order would once again be shaken almost to collapse. By around 130 ABY, the One Sith emerged from the shadows and into open conflict with the Jedi. With the dissolution of the Galactic Alliance, and the Sith joining forces with the new Galactic Empire, the Jedi were steadily losing ground against their foe. The final stroke by the Sith was an all-out attack on the temple at Ossus. Because the Sith attacked before all of them could arrive, about half of the Jedi survived the attack. The Order went into hiding, pursued by both the Sith and by bounty hunters eager to claim the substantial rewards offered for capture of live Jedi. Cade Skywalker, having turned away from his heritage and Jedi training, became a bounty hunter and went so far as to turn in one of his fellow Jedi.

Few Jedi at Ossus survived Krayt's purge. Ahn Rasi Tuum, Hosk Trey'lis, and an unnamed Human woman were subsequently killed by the Sith in the ensuing years, with another killed by the Anzati bounty hunter Sint Yoru. Presumably the rest remained in hiding, were killed or captured by the Empire, or managed to find sanctuary with the Galactic Alliance Remnant. Many members of the order went to the Hidden Temple and took refuge there until discovered by Cade Skywalker. Due to a double agent, the Imperial Knights learned of the Temple's location and came to negotiate with the remains of the Jedi Council for an alliance with the Empire they serve. Having seen the inner workings and conflicts amongst the Sith, Skywalker suggested they put together a squad to kill Darth Krayt, figuring the Sith would collapse upon themselves with no uniting leader to keep them in line. The Council agreed to discuss an alliance with Fel, but rejected Skywalker's assassination plan. Skywalker and his allies went through with the plan, and their mission ended in Krayt's death. More Jedi would eventually come out of hiding and join in the war against Krayt's Empire as it progressed. The Jedi later aided in the Evacuation of Dac.

The Third Jedi Purge came to an end when the Battle of Coruscant was won by the allied forces of the Jedi, the Galactic Alliance Remnant and the Fel loyalists. With Darth Krayt's death at the hands of the Jedi Cade Skywalker and the subsequent collapse of the Galactic Empire, the Jedi Order ultimately emerged intact for the most part and was able to assume its former place in the Galaxy once more. Jedi Master K'Kruhk, formerly of the original Jedi Order and a member of the Jedi Council, joined with Admiral Gar Stazi and Empress Marasiah Fel to create the Galactic Federation Triumvirate. Together, the three new triumvirs would establish their collective rule over a unified galaxy. The One Sith, despite failing to complete the Jedi Purge or win the Second Imperial Civil War, survived the death of their founder and fled into hiding. Under the leadership of Darth Nihl, the remaining Sith sought to destroy the new order from within by infiltrating every planetary government in the galaxy.

The Second Golden Age
The period between 138-425 ABY saw a significant rise in the size of the Jedi Order. ::WiP::
