Jedi High Council
A theocratic advisory body of several of the Jedi Order's wisest members, the Jedi High Council (typically acknowledged as the Jedi Council) is the highest authority of the Jedi Order, and guides the Order's direction as an organization. The number of Jedi Masters serving on the Jedi Council has varied from era to era; during the rise of the first Galactic Empire, the Jedi Council was composed of twelve Jedi Masters per tradition. After the Jedi Order's rejuvenation however, Jedi Masters were elected and assigned to the Jedi Council were elected per the needs of the Jedi Order; thus in the New Jedi Order, the Jedi Council was not required to possess a set number of individuals. In recent years, however, the Council has again returned to it's former twelve member state. Although their authority may appear to make them seem as rulers, the Jedi Council in fact functions to serve the Order, guiding its Jedi Knights and presiding over the Order's affairs.
In custom, the Jedi Council meets at a designated area of the Order's premier Jedi Temple, although this is not necessary to hold a meeting session. In the Coruscant Jedi Temple, the Jedi Council would gather in a central spire, above the Temple, whereas in the Jedi Temple on Tython, the meeting place of the Council is located in a central chamber, deep within the Jedi Temple.
The Jedi Council is composed of twelve members: five life time members (the Grand Master, the Battle Master, the Prime Envoy, the Sage Master, and the Lore Master), four long-term members, and three limited-term members.. Each member of the Jedi High Council is ordinarily entitled to an indefinite position of servitude, although they can choose to relinquish their position, and a single member can be re-probated by the unanimous vote of the Council.
