Two. It was not a large number, but with time and a great deal of multiplication, it held within the ability to be more. Two was greater than one. One may put a thousand to flight, but two could defeat 10,000. It was why wolves were pack creatures. There was a strength to number that even a lone wolf could not deny. Gerwald had tried. Varick had in his own way as well. Alwine, she was lost to them. Three had become two, and two became one. While Gerwald could not repair the damages held with his sister, he could mend those with his brother.

He sat at the edge of the woods with his eyes cast on the ruins of Bloodraven Hall. From a distance the wolf was safe, but the bustle of Fayth and the eyesore of their banners flying from a home that was rightfully his kept the lone wolf out of reach. Aelin had been right. He should have let Varick know of their home first. The beast could not understand why he had allowed the mystery of the she-wolf to cloud better judgment, but it seemed he was still learning a lesson the universe saw fit to continue to teach him.

Gerwald sighed as he leaned against the massive trunk of the majestic tree he had decided was his. His arms were crossed as his eyes closed. The wolf bowed his head, letting his chin rest against his chest. To the observer it would appear as though Gerwald was taking a nap. His legs crossed at his ankles to further give the illusion. Sleep was the furthest thing from the wolf’s mind as he used the force to search for the familiar aura of his brother.

<< “We are long overdue to have the conversation we have both been avoiding. Come and find me. I have something to show you.” >>

It was as close to an apology Gerwald would give in the moment. They had both abandoned each other, and like brothers they appeared to have lost no time whenever they crossed each other’s path. Times had changed. They were no longer crossing paths on occasion, but part of a movement to free their ancestral home. The culture they found themselves in would consider Varick to be the alpha of the clan by default. They had not lived according to these ways, nor did Gerwald care to. Both of them were lone wolves which had lost their way, and only together would they find it again.

Anger welled within the Lupo as his mind replayed the events of his last visit to Bloodraven Hall. He was more angry with himself than even the Fayth. Gerwald should have known, he should have told Varick. Today all of it was going change. Gerwald focused his anger. He would use it as he had been taught to, and Varick would help him. Together they would take back what was rightfully theirs, and the Fayth would know that there were Lechners on Islimore.

Would it be foolish? Perhaps.

Still, it was time for the Lechners to stop hiding who they were and what just two of them were truly capable of.
