ADVANCED SYSTEMS
  • Molecular Furnace - Despite its bad reputation as a main component to a superweapon like the World Devastator, the Molecular Furnace's inside of the Girth of Gluttony are far more benign. Through the use of robotic tethers and careful use of its 300 tractor beams, the Girth of Gluttony is capable rebuilding damaged or destroyed starfighters at a molecular level. It may even use raw material salvage, to construct replacement parts for any part of the Girth of Gluttony. Beyond this however, it is unable to do much more than simply recycle old material or refine new raw materials to ensure the autonomy, and self-dependence of the vessel for as long as the molecular furnace burns.
  • Shield Network - In order to maximize the protection of the vessel and allow a system by which its massive flotilla of starfighters may launch unhindered and protected by long range attack from enemy capital ships, the Girth of Gluttony uses two sets of shields and an intricate shield gate system for its hangars. The Secondary Shield a ray shield (or energy shield) that absorbs/deflects energy projectiles and radiation, but allows physical objects to pass through (including space debris or high-velocity munitions). It is possible it could cause some mild drag on objects passing through, slowing them slightly due to a mild electric discharge, which is also weakened by the shields relative distance from its generator network. The Primary shield deflector shield that overlaps the hull of the vessel, while each hangar protrudes from the hull just enough in order to act as an independent shield gate through the Primary shield, allowing star-fighters to launch without dropping any of the shields except in their specific location. Together, the shields offer an excellent defense against all energy projectiles, that if not stopped by the Secondary Shield, will be met by the Primary deflector shield, and additionally as projectiles or debris passes through the Secondary Shield, the Primary Deflector shield will offer significant coverage. If a projectile were to get passed both shields, it would be met with meters of Quadranium steel, unlikely to damage any major components of the vessel's interior. Theoretically however, if a shot were timed correctly, a high-velocity solid projectile could be launched into a hangar bay and destroy it at the moment it launches starfighters, and cause massive damage to some of the vessels systems more easily. Such a high precision shot however, would almost certainly require some degree of precognition or extraordinary luck to conduct; additionally, an enemy starfighter could potentially cause significant damage in the same way, if it could get passed a swarm of defending starfighters, and time its entrance through the Deflector shield and into the hangar.
Strengths:
  • Dedicated Super Carrier - There are few ships in the galaxy that can field quite as many starfighters as the Girth of Gluttony, and with almost certainty, none of them are capable of recovering and repairing them in a matter of hours as the Girth of Gluttony can.
  • Double Redundant, Double Envelope - With two sets of shields set 1 kilometer apart, the Girth of Gluttony is well protected from long range attack, and can provide cover for smaller ships very near to it (such as droid starfighters). Additionally, it sports a backup shield generator if both primary and secondary shields fail, and is well protected by dozens or hundreds of meters of a Quadranium Steel Hull.
  • Autonomous and Self-Sufficiently Independent - With no crew requirements to speak of, operating off of a single droid brain, the Girth of Gluttony can operate totally independent without any user input. Additionally, with its ability to conduct self-repairs, the Girth of Gluttony has an unpredictably long operational lifetime without the need to be berthed at a starport... virtually ever.
Weaknesses:
  • Complete and Total Reliance on Starfighter Superiority - With literally no armaments, the Girth of Gluttony essentially lives or dies depending on its ability to field more starfighters than the enemy, and repair them faster than they can be destroyed before overwhelming the enemy. If the Girth of Gluttony is faced against an enemy fielding a starfighter force that can destroy its starfighters faster than they can be rebuilt, and faster than the Girth of Gluttony can destroy the enemy capital ships, the Girth of Gluttony must surrender or retreat, without additional support to mitigate its losses.
  • Lumbering Target - Although it fields an impressive and almost daunting defensive network... ultimately this is because it has sacrificed everything for hangar and cargo space. It moves very slowly, maneuvers very slowly (does a sphere even need to maneuver?), and is a giant freakin' 2 km diameter spherical target! It will be harder to miss this ship than to hit it, even a stormtrooper could do it!
  • Droid Intelligence - It is true that the ship is an autonomous and self-sufficient independent entity, but that doesn't make it an intelligent one. The centralized intelligence of the Girth of Gluttony is based off of a Holocron gatekeeper designed after Darth Voracitos, and its only real prime directives are to ensure the ship maintains full functionality, and overwhelm threats with overwhelming numbers until they are no longer a threat, or until it's time to jump away into hyperspace. To say that the Girth of Gluttony's droid brain wasn't sophisticated, is a bit of an understatement. The droid intelligence in its star-fighters is likely more intelligent by contrast.
Description: The Girth of Gluttony was constructed under the idea that an entire fleet could be condensed into a single, self-sufficient, autonomous, and enormous vessel. Commissioned by the "Shadow Emperor" Darth Voracitos in the days of the Sith Empire (Pre-One Sith), the Girth of Gluttony was to be his ultimate construction, the magnum opus of his wealth and power. It was never fully constructed due to his untimely death, but the resultant creation was nonetheless a formidable vessel that was unlikely to be matched by any Star Destroyer of that era in time. Additionally, this vessel was constructed with the intent of it being operated by his own very soul should he ever be untimely disposed of... as he inevitably was, his paranoia over his own death becoming the very downfall that lead to it.

Completely automated, it was envisioned to be its own fleet, at which the Emperor may observe its destructive power without harm, safely in its very center. It holds a massive storage of droid starfighters and probes, comparable to the total meterage of the average fleet battle-group it would face against. Completely unarmed, it is most likely the most defensive device ever built of that era, particularly of the Sith Empire. It boasts a powerful shield system, and its only "armaments" are composed of hundreds of tractor beams. It contains the life support of a ridiculously smaller vessel, as it only supports the comparably small Throne Room. It holds few other rooms, no hallways of passageways beyond the Throne Room. The entrance to the Throne Room itself is only accessible by a small hangar large enough to fit a single personal transport vehicle, connected directly to the Throne room, and leading to a tram that is the only way inside or outside the gigantic orb.

One of its more unique features beyond its iconic shape, and impressive shield network, was its utilization of Molecular Furnaces. These furnaces in the cargo holds of the Girth of Gluttony, would utilize robotic tethers and the use of tractor beams to pull broken or destroyed starfighters (or raw materials) and reforge them into useful materials down to the molecular level, manufacturing new starfighters or replacement parts directly in the Cargo holds. This was the key to making the vessel self-sufficient and independent of the need to ever dock, virtually ever, in its operational life time.

For a time, the vessel also acted as something like a factory for the Mandalorian [member="Captain Larraq"] and his company, as he had managed to take ownership of the vessel following the blunders of Voracitos' spirit psuedo-facsimile that ended upon taking control of the Holocron that served as the droid brain of the Girth of Gluttony. The Mandalorian utilized its molecular furnaces for a variety of purposes, before eventually Darth Voracitos proper, returned from the Netherworld in the flesh, managed to retrieve the Girth of Gluttony back from the Mandalorians.

The vessel, once again under Voracitos' ownership, was often sent to wander the galaxy whenever he was absent, and to return whenever his force signature called out to his Holocron, which possessed nine comatose Shards he had originally bonded his spirit to for the purpose of housing and amplifying his soul, though now only served for this express purpose of summoning it. Occasionally, the Sith Lord will actually utilize the vessel, though more often than not, Voracitos will find himself continually disappointed in the vessel, in the fact it was never completed to its full glory, and failed to meet many of his expectations...

Authors Notes:

  • This is not a new ship! This submission is an update to the original submission found here: http://starwarsrp.net/topic/9882-girth-of-gluttony/ The original submission was lost in the site purge during the Dark Harvest event, and was recovered by the factory staff at the time... years ago! There is a lot of history to this ship and with this particular character, and I want to make sure it is presented properly in a modern template for ease of use purposes.
  • *As a disclaimer, for the purposes of Fleet size calculation, the Girth of Gluttony counts as a 5km length warship due to the mass and volume of the vessel, and the number of squadrons it is capable of fielding.
  • Not sure if this is something that's against the rules or not, but my reasoning for an extreme rating for both defense and hangar capacity, is that in all other capacities this ship is entirely stripped. It has no armaments beyond tractor beams, and has next to no maneuverability or speed, and the original submission already possessed layered shields and heavy armor plating, which is the exact description of an extreme defense rating.

This is a pretty cool piece of Chaos history.

*Yes, I recognize that in the current template the maximum squadron count for a vessel of 2km is 18. However, most all submissions of this size only encompass 2km in length alone, where the Girth of Gluttony fields 2km in all dimensions, giving it a volume of 4.19 kilometers cubed. Also it was just sheer coincidence that 500 starfighters happened to fit just under 42 squadrons, the maximum squadron count for a 5km ship length... so it all worked out to me!
Spheres definitely provide more volume per mass, something that Lucrehulks tend to remind us of. That being said, I do not think that I can approve this as a simple 2000 meter long warship. If you'll put a disclaimer in here that this is actually equivalent to 5 kilometer warship for fleet calculating purposes (it's at least equivalent to that in terms of mass/volume, as you've pointed out), I think we should be okay.

Is there a method in how this ship raises and lowers ifs outer shield in order to release fighters?

EDIT: Particle shields have to be lowered in order to let physical objects(such as fighters) in and out.

[member="Gir Quee"] Sorry about the absence there! Preparations for the Nor'Easter had me a bit busy this week.

Anyway! The original inspiration for a secondary shield farther out than is typical stems from this submission by the Protectorate, though upon viewing it now it seems I misunderstood how it applied its shields, which created an "umbrella". This is not feasible for the Girth of Gluttony, so I shall offer an explanation under Advanced Systems:

  • Shield Network - In order to maximize the protection of the vessel and allow a system by which its massive flotilla of starfighters may launch unhindered and protected by long range attack from enemy capital ships, the Girth of Gluttony uses two sets of shields and an intricate shield gate system for its hangars. I hope this is a satisfactory answer!

[member="Darth Voracitos"], I do apologize for this, but I recently was reminded about something.

Technically (from an OOC Factory standpoint currently), this can't be owned by an individual, even if he is the only who uses it in-character. Because of this, if you'll remove "Darth Voracitos" from this list.
