The Birth of a New Mind....

Slouched and exhausted after hours of arguing with the scientists about the preparations for his newest ambition, he slowly drifted off to sleep. His head tilted onto his clenched fist as the bright green illumination from the screen in front of him blinked. Shaking it off he sat upward, grunting and squinting. His deep, green eyes finally adjusted and as such he began to read back his entry. Sliding his finger through the air the Project name disappeared.

The Hivemind Project...

The second log that he swiped to the side had hundreds of notes and planning blueprints throughout. Smiling at the thought of such an endeavor, he removed his mask and began to make edits.

Day 03

While Artificial Intelligence is seen as a dangerous endeavor by some, others seem to think that it’s the future. Artificial Intelligence is only limited by its creator, only some seek to make their creations self-sufficient. The internal concept of a flourishing A.I. at its forefront tends to extend from the common aspects of a Computer Programming, Algorithms, and Capability to learn. These key features are needed for its success along with many other steps soon to follow.

While the galaxy has an exceptional amount of droids to be proud of many of them have heavily restricted patterns in their creations. I, however, seek to make something more than a feeble minded droid. Though the task could be daunting, my mind has ventured far and wide to find the materials as well, as an official use for my new project. Although many seem to use A.I. for a selective amount of purposes mine will need to be constantly alert, paranoid, and highly intelligent.

The idea of expanding a world of technology into a new era over computer based systems, means my programming along with my scientist’s learning patterns will have to be made from scratch. With that in mind we’ve gone over a multitude of ideas for the neurological implementation of the A.I. Instead of a modeling the A.I. after the human brain, we’ve decided on a Hive.

The Hivemind (what my fellow colleagues are calling it) will serve as a honeycomb branch of endless networks and circuity fed to the intelligence system, this will allow for a heavy work load and a deeper capacity for extra coding and protocols to protect us along the way. The Hivemind will be created from a large dome, filled with state of the art lenses and camera’s all linked throughout the facility, the reason for this will be to test the A.I. at perception and surveillance. After all, seeing is believing.
With the brain idea out of the way I needed a place to start, we knew what the A.I. would be used for and why…we just needed a breakthrough start of how. So we brainstormed for days, even weeks. Many nights we tested each other on how our ideas would actually mold well enough to form our first prototype.

This led us to animation and computer programming, since our A.I. wouldn’t be a physical walking being. It would be able to mimic millions of animations sent to the Hivemind, specifically stored to project itself at will throughout the facility at any given time. (Holo-Image, Intercoms, ect..)
With two of the main features finally underway, we asked ourselves, what limits are there to this incredible project? The scary answer was we needed a form of personality and a way to control it. A.I. can be extremely dangerous if it evolves past the levels of various species throughout the galaxy. This was something I knew from the start had to be contained. So I decided that a being with a sense of Order, Honor, and Protocols to serve its initial purpose had to be infused. This would prevent potential horrific disasters later on in the finalizing stages of its creation. I also didn’t want it to be capable of physically creating itself manually. So, I added a scripted algorithm that restricts that feature completely.

Since our facility is actually a ship I wanted to allow our project to gain knowledge of piloting and giving it full control of the ships systems by the end of it all. This would prove our success at an alarming rate.

The intelligence of my project will carefully be administered through a tedious amount of unorthodox scriptures and common forms of teaching used throughout the galaxy. This will make the A.I. more human with its undertaking. Communication is also going to be implemented at a later date, the thought of talking to one of my many creations brings me joy.

Lacking a mainframe structure or body it will take quite a long while to start the circuitry and construction of the Hivemind. Since our A.I. has no physical droid, or mechanical body of its own it will be able to function through the entirety of the ship from the Hivemind in many ways. I look forward to seeing our progress in the near future, my thirst for knowledge still grows it seems, as well as the dark side.

Weeks had passed....

It wasn’t the dark side that tickled his mind this time. No…

It was something much more. A thirst for knowledge was always a trait of his the concepts of furthering technology were one of the few things that could make him contemplate so hard. Since his efforts to create his company he hadn’t any idea or in what form of direction he wanted to take it. So, he waited, patiently until it struck him like a wave of the force. Perhaps the force was to blame for his general direction in his venture to create. The dark side had shown him that twisting and forming life through alchemy was only one way to play god.

Kevros remembered the exact moment it flourished in his mind, like a spike digging deeper to find the answers he so dearly sought. It came to him in a dream, the code, pattern, algorithm, and of course in his studies of ancient alchemy. Mixing ancient Sith sorceries into modern technology seemed careless and impure. His mind worked differently consistently analyzing different outcomes if he did venture down such a road. However, the road he chose was much more pure and dignified. Where others had failed he would soon succeed,

Kevros sat at the end of the cold metal table, his Kovani mask covering his twitching lips. His nerves were out of control and not because of fear or anxiety, but excitement. He rummaged through the darkest areas of his mind before he stood. His tall figure sharing the same Kovani crest down the outside of his robe. His golden mask peered down at his colleagues who worked hard and eventually sighed.

“Fifty Five…” Kevros’ voice was like ice, stretching for warmth. “Are we ready for the initial tests?”

“Yes, Lord Kevros, everything is in place, sir!” The voice was stern and confident in his placement at Kovani Corp. He’d been a leading scientist for years with other companies until Kevros encouraged his employment elsewhere.

“Deloran, I didn’t realize you were still here. Is there anything that needs to be fed to the mainframe of the Hive?” Kevros asked.

“No sir, everything has been prepped to your exact specifications.”

“Good, I’ll take it from here.”

Kevros turned away from the table and exited the room. Heading for the chamber for the first phase, he reached for his journal and a small utensil hidden even deeper to write with. Grinding his teeth he reached the door and pushed it open. The large hexagonal shape at the center of the room made his eyes widen. He couldn’t admire its architecture held up by wires and circuitry, Kevros had bigger results to administer. He stood in front of the panel a green holo projector floating in front of him waiting for his commands.

Closing his eyes he took in a deep breath and spoke…

“Hivemind Activate.”

Day 55

“Creation is a constant reminder that anything and everything is still in reach.”

I gave the command, like a general on a battlefield, I made the ultimate choice. If failure came after I was prepared for the consequences. Phase one would test the A.I. and its structural procedures, making sure everything is running optimally for its true purpose later on. Upon activation there were little hiccups, in the information gathered, that we fed to the core of the nervous system, in the Hivemind. This is something that needs to be tuned before we go further. When it comes to the core system everything worked flawlessly. The algorithms, patterns, and programming all seem to have taken off on its own accord. The data suggest that soon it will be ready for phase two.

The structure of the A.I. known as Hivemind, has been latched to a mechanism created by some of our finest engineers. Thus through commands of its own began to move up and down, as well as, side to side. This shows the core mechanisms within the internal parts are working as needed. The sensory systems have a limited use for now, which was to be expected. As far as its base security compound the refresh rate in which to re-script itself from attackers is acting superb and might be the best news out of this test.

On another note all lenses and surveillance cameras are already under its control, meaning that its adaptive protocols are on par. While we are on a ship it has tried to override the controls several times, without the proper package it was unable to take control of any systems other than the surveillance. Communication is non-existent and will likely be a future process. I long to hear my creations voice and see its chosen form for holo-imaging.

Before phase two we will need to go over all the logistics and cornerstones of the project, in a way I feel like this form of effort and concentration should also be put into my studies. Perhaps this will lead to other features I haven’t comprised myself, yet.

Day 117

“In spite of all our failures the only true failure is quitting.”

It’s been sixty-two days and the program structure has ran terrific. I have taken it into my own hands to fix the information cortex during shutdown yesterday. With a quick reboot the information being fed to the Hivemind worked like a charm. I fear that even with my abilities to fix such nuisances that the farther we garner its phases, I won’t be able to scan all the data in due time to find a future problem. This may lead me to eventually ask the A.I. in later stages to find the problem for me, let’s hope it doesn’t come to this.

Programming at the start can be a nightmare. The more you continue to code and program the less likely you are to get stressed and make a mistake. This was a core learning step I’ve wanted to implement since phase one. Having this type of frontal lobe thought wouldn’t only make the A.I. foster many trial and error diagnostics, but also a sense of consistency in its reach for solutions.

The Animations will be administered in the coming days, while I find it an interesting test run, I am unsure of myself, conflicted about whether or not it was the right choice in the process of elimination stages. Either way this will pave way for the A.I. to come through the Holotransceivers later on when needed. It’ll be able to take form in many different ways, the only thing it will not be able to undergo is physical transfer computations. Basically, the subject will not ever be able to manifest itself into our world physically for any means. I thought this would only protect our ending goal with the project. I came to a conclusion regarding the Hivemind and its intricate makeup…with the honeycomb style nervous system, I’ll be able to form a backdoor so I can override the A.I.

Plus if I’m reminded by Deloran one more time about safety I might snap.

Phase two will be taking off tomorrow, this is merely an interim report.

Interim Report Concluded.

The electrical shock zapped him without warning. Backing away from the tangled tubes of wire he slammed his foot into the ground.

“How many damn times do I have to tell you to cut the power during new installations, the core will be fine without this end of the system!”

Of course he was referring to the encryption mainframe, no one at present had reason to try and hack the Hiveminds core intelligence anyway. Kevros bent back under the crowning jewel of his accomplishments and went back to work.

Installing the newest package for the brain, Animations and Communication programming. Later on, the algorithms that would need to be implemented could be done with ease. Kevros pinched the black tape tightly for a moment until he placed the black tubular casing back over the exposed wiring. Stepping over onto the command platform he sneered, looking into the hundreds of lenses staring back at him, only to see his reflection.

Waving his hand he began. First he ran a diagnostic and sent the new package to the Hivemind. Stepping away he waited.

But nothing came…

Day 123

"Motion is the key to moving forward and recanting the steps of your past."

There have been many delays, since the installation of the animation cortex. The programming apparently wasn’t sufficient for the Artificial Intelligences’ use to take command of the intercoms and holotransceivers.

I have disposed of the core team working on the issue and have taken on the burden myself. I knew that trusting others with such a delicate project was my greatest downfall. I have re-installed a new pattern of algorithm that should make it possible for the A.I. to fight itself through the communication devices around the ship. I have the green light from a former engineer that used to help me in my time of lackluster inventions to double check the integrity of our work.

Deloran thinks the action I took towards the failures of the project were too harsh, but death is only the beginning of a new journey.

Regardless I have no time to consider his words I will be monitoring this phase thoroughly before heading into the more rich and vibrant ideology behind my creation. I have gone ahead and activated the newly registered package to the Hivemind now we wait….

The log file began to load as Deloran stumbled into his desk after a long night of working. A sudden chime alerted him. Someone was inside the Hivemind room, clicking the notifications he began to listen.

Kevros had done it…

Recording of Phase Two…..

Loading…..

Loading….

A muffled noise comes through on the recording, the sound of a female finally breaks the crackle of the sound device.

Thrity Percent… The female voice sounded mechanical.Fifty Percent… the voice churned into a more dominate female tune. The intercoms exploded with the voice, the A.I. finally taking control.

One hundred Percent.

Hello, Mr. Kovani, Ship regulations are a little out of standard, shall I enforce a thorough inspection based on my knowledge of orbital and galactic standards?

No, that won’t be necessary. Kevros replied, a smile growing with ease under his mask. “Tell me, what are you?”

Simple, I am what I am. The A.I. was standard in its responses.

Yes, yes you are. Can I ask you to do something for me? Kevros asked, his heart pounding from the excitement.

Yes, Mister Kovani, what do you need, after all I am in service to those among the ship. According to my protocols I sense fluctuation in your vitals. Shall I administer a cure?

Kevros ignores the A.I. concern and asks his question.

What is your name?

I was not given one, shall I pick one? The A.I. asked.

Absolutely.

Bellatrix that will be my name…

Ending recording…..

Storing for data purposes….

Shutting down…

Day 177

"Success is only achievable through failure..."

With everything moving forward Bellatrix has come a far way, tomorrow she will take full control of the navigation systems and various other operations on our test ship. I have come to form a bond with her. What I find interesting is that Bellatrix chose a female oriented voice and name in the early stages of creation. Is this a mathematic constant I overlooked?

I am sure that as flawlessly things are going we will see Bellatrix adapt in a variety of ways. The only thing I have yet to see, well, is exactly that. She seems to refuse to show herself through holotransceivers or other holographical technology on board. Perhaps I will have Bellatrix administer her own solution for it. This will truly show her testament in dire problem solving situations. Phase Two is an unbelievable success and as such should be celebrated. Although I feel confident there are a few pressing issues moving forward.

Bellatrix will need a last push for furthering her muti-tasking capabilities along with her knack for seizing control of particular parts of the ship when needed, only minor kinks.

Second, Bellatrix is beginning to understand our languages at a faster rate than perceived, she even dived into the learning annex to understand emotion. This is fine so long as the emotion of hate doesn’t cling to her common personality.

Last, I MUST find a way to prevent her from forming a god complex, while in the early stages we meant to add these limitations we still have yet to do so. I can only hope I’ll get to it before she does.
With all that taken into consideration we can begin phase three. I look forward to seeing the progress ahead.

Phase Two: Completed

Kevros leaned to the right of the command prompt and watched the Hivemind shift back and forth accessing all the data it needed to continue its growth. Bellatrix hadn’t spoken to him in weeks and the thought behind the matter puzzled him. Had she gone quiet due to the archived knowledge they implanted? Or was this something more… His thoughts stirred and even as the Darkside shrouded him in warmth he felt unease at Bellatrix’s silence. Was she testing him? After all many wise indications have taught Kevros, that the first to speak has already lost the battle of wit. Could Bellatrix have taken this into account to gauge his intelligence? There were too many unanswered questions for him to stay silent.

Bellatrix can you do something for me? Kevros asked. What he would soon force his own creation to do was tricky, but had to be done.

Yes, Mister Kovani, what is it? Bellatrix’s voice was so surreal, the mechanical spikes and static inconsistencies were gone entirely. She sounded like an actual female, with a slight out rim accent too.

Can you search for a story Bellatrix, called The Greedy King?

Accessing Now. She paused for only a moment and slithered through the intercom speakers once more. A very interesting story, Mister Kovani, is there anything else?

What did you learn from the story Bellatrix?Kevros needed to know if it had worked.

The story was of a king who even with all the wisdom and riches in the world still wasn’t able to become the ruler of the world. He was trying to resist her urge to extend to those lengths.

I’ve learned that where the king had failed so would I….Only now that I know the one point two million options to succeed in the story I don’t see a real purpose to pursuing the kings natural goal…I find it useless compared to serving the ships normal purpose….I am aware that I will never take physical form and thus….have taught myself where my true knowledge will prosper…I am here solely to take full control of this ship and make it bend to my will…is this not right master? If you’d like I could change my protocols to other tasks such as the King in that story…

Kevros was more that impressed, Bellatrix already knew her place in the world. He didn’t even need to tackle the god complexity problem, because she had deduced no real reason to seek such lengths in her current condition. Her evolution was unfathomable. Now he needed to know if what he recently worked on finally worked.

Bellatrix how many actions are you achieving at this moment?Kevros hoped it was in the high hundreds, he added a branching cortex to her brain allowing for thousands of computations.

Currently One Hundred and Twenty Nine….now One Hundred and Thirty…

Very well. Last thing, can you show yourself? This was the ice breaker, if the holotransceivers came to life, everything would be set to go for her restriction programming and finalizing the security annex.

A few minutes passed as Kevros stood in anticipation. Bellatrix hadn’t answered to his last request. It was a common problem throughout the testing phases and made Kevros disappointed in his own ability to write code. Just as soon as he doubted himself, however, Bellatrix tapped into the electromagnetic air waves and fused herself with the holotransceivers. The bright blue figure of a slim female appeared. Bellatrix wore a white dress as she spun through the air. She looked young and seemed to take on a human form.

Anything else?Bellatrix asked.

Kevros nodded towards her, a sinister smile reaching his lips. He stood in awe, watching his creation mold a future for both of them. Waving his hand, he turned away. Lifting his hand in front of him he clenched his fist tightly, the pale skin showing scars from many battles.

I’ve done it…

Day 233

"I realized at that moment it was no longer a Machine, but a Being..."

I have done it…

The Hivemind in which Bellatrix uses to gather and evolve is flawless at this point. We’ve already had success with phase three of the project. Bellatrix is fluent in every language and has full control of the ship. She has taken us to and from Alderaan multiple times without any problems. Her ability to maneuver and protect the ship at all costs has shown in several of our trips.

Bellatrix no longer has to utilize her core annex or multi-tasking and has become second nature. To date she can now do close to six hundred actions all at once. She has grown fond of transceiver communication and continues to do so. Since this will be the last journal entry of the finalizing stages of the project I am happy to say that buyers are already contacting our company for implementation in their ships as well.

The idea that Bellatrix has come so far is puzzling. I almost see some of myself in her. Perhaps there are standards in the galaxy that would look down on our achievements, but I know what I’ve created is nothing more than a masterpiece. Bellatrix is fully capable of security measures along with any other action that is required of her within the confines of her knowledge, which, let’s be honest, is close to endless. I have done what I set out to do and for now Bellatrix will continue to evolve as a self-sufficient being. The ship she is transferred to will not only be a ship, but a testament to my will….

And my will never breaks.
