Approved Tech The .357 Calrissian Hyperdrive

Status
Not open for further replies.
Intent: A fast hyperdrive.
Development Thread: Hear Me Baby, Hold Together (primary), acquisition of S-6 generators (supporting information)
Manufacturer: The Underground: Dingo Darr's Chop Shop, Ord Mantell
Model: The .357 Calrissian. Heavily modified combination of Nubian S-6 hyperdrive generators with Silk, Sienar and Koensayr hyperdrive cores.
Affiliation: The Underground. Specifically, [member="Sam Turain"], [member="Coren Starchaser"], Jorus Merrill, [member="Andrasta Sitra"], [member="Eliza Steele"], [member="Spark Finn"], and [member="Kale Arkin"]. A few drives may be used as faction prizes in the future.
Modularity: No. Heavily modified already.
Production: Semi-Unique (Specific PCs only).
Material: Hyperdrive components
Description: The Underground .357 was born when Jorus Merrill, creator of some of the fastest and most reliable hyperdrives in the galaxy -- the 0.5 Silkworm, the 0.4 Rassilon, etc. -- discovered Nubian S-6 generators for sale for the price of a good blaster rifle. The S-6 generators had historically been used to make ships go 0.7 (stock) or 0.5 (with modification). He purchased three hundred of them, plus enough good hyperdrive cores and other components to make the S-6 units the heart of a function set of hyperdrives. Under Jorus' direction and working from his prototype, teams of Underground hyperdrive mechanics and several experienced technopaths assembled and modified the drives for a collective stress test. The drives were then drone-tested off Ord Mantell. Of the three hundred drives, a large fraction of them burned out, or were rated unsafe and stripped back to parts. Another large portion rated a very fast 0.5-0.7, well within the standard tolerances of a properly modified S-6. And a very few rated a stable 0.357.
  • Very, very fast: At class-0.357, the Calrissian is possibly the fastest stable non-unique hyperdrive ever produced, though not by much. It is only 0.043 faster than a Bes'uliik, a Sekotan ship, or a Rassilon, and slower than the unique Jade Sabre.
  • Fuel-inefficient sprinter: The .357 Calrissian has a maximum range of 15,000 light-years (roughly three map squares) before refueling is required and expert retuning is recommended. This range is equivalent to that of a shuttle and longer than most starfighters, but shorter than most freighters, warships, and personal transports. This means that blindingly fast jaunts across the galaxy simply aren't an option. Frequent pit stops force long-distance trips to average out to the equivalent of roughly 0.5-0.7, the S-6's original rating.
  • Size restrictions: The .357 Calrissian is too large to fit aboard a starfighter and too small to work for a line corvette. Barring odd hull shapes, it can only be used for ships of 25-80 metres in length.
  • Incompatible with a HIMS: Don't use this drive at the same time as/as part of a Hyperwave Inertial Momentum Sustainer. Normal HIMS use is so turbulent it can cause system failures and crew injuries. Using a HIMS with a .357 Calrissian will cause major structural damage and crew fatalities, and your ship may never jump again, on the rather large assumption that it gets where it's going in the first place.
Primary Source: J-type diplomatic variant, J-type star skiff variant, Bes'uliik (unlinkable due to apostrophe), Sekotan ship, Rassilon

SUGGESTIONS

Of the three hundred drives, a large fraction of them burned out, or were rated unsafe and stripped back to parts. Another large portion rated a very fast 0.5-0.7, well within the standard tolerances of a properly modified S-6. Some achieved a blistering 0.4, equivalent to a Mandalorian Bes'uliik, a Sekotan liveship, or a Silk Rassilon. And a very few rated a stable 0.357.
Anything above .5 has always required dev in the past, and while you have done a thread, I am confused. Is this a submission for limited 0.4 or unique 0.357 as this portion of the description makes that questionable.

Also for reference 6 of your dev thread posts aren't what I would consider quality, but for .05 hyperdrive i will still take the 28 posts you did have since .4's have been approved at 10 posts.
