Production: Mass-production.
Material: Alusteel casing, laser components.
Description: The Tactical AMS is a turret-mounted anti-missile laser weapon which tracks, targets, and destroys the projectiles with precision. Designed for long and mid-ranged targets, the system is not reliable against short-ranged launches and as such will offer little to no defense against targets within a 50m range and has an optimal accuracy exceeding 100m with a maximum accurate range of 5000m. Because of its nature, the AMS is specifically an anti-missile system and will have little--if any--effect on aircraft. As well, the system being automated makes it impossible to use against ground targets and even if it were tweaked for such the technology behind it would be inefficient for such tasks.

The AMS can be installed on vehicles, structures, or defensive weapon emplacements. In theory they could also be attached to starcraft but due to the sheer scope of space warfare such usage would have limited applications and be outclassed by more practical point-defense systems.

Strengths:
  • Extremely accurate anti-missile weapon.
  • Automated.
Weaknesses:
  • Limited applications.
  • Automation systems come factory set to target only missile signatures.

I'd imagine that in order for the system to destroy a proton torpedo that it'd require a concentrated effort from more than one Tactical AMS. Seeing as I doubt the laser is powerful enough to penetrate the shield quick enough from only one AMS.
